Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just found out I can read ILX on my mobile phone (WAP). I'm flabbergasted, stunned, overwhelmed. It's amazing. So my request is, because you have to scroll through so many threads, can you put in a feature that places the interesting threads at the top of the list? You know the good ones that people want to read. Funny, interesting ones. What do you mean you can't....hey....wait a minute....

It's true though about the phone and I am surprised. And pleased.

Skottie, Monday, 14 April 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Really? There's no specific support for this, though it was once roughly planned. Are you just typing the address into your WAP browser, or are you using an HTML convetor like Google's? Can you view other sites with it?

Graham (graham), Monday, 14 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

With the site being so text-based, it's not surprising that it's compatible. I've actually been surfing ILX regularly from a Blackberry or a Palm Tungsten. It actually works reasonably well with the Tungsten, except for the fact that I can't log in properly so it's impossible to see only the last, say, 50 posts on a thread, which means the longer threads get truncated. Oh well.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 14 April 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually typed in www.google.com and then when that miraculously worked, I searched for "ILX new answers". The link showed up and I clicked it and it loaded just fine. It's obviously split into multiple pages, but loads quickly and works well. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with the phone (a Siemens), because I don't know how to do anything out of the ordinary with it. I've visited others sites with it, but so far only ones that I knew were WAP enabled like Washingtonpost.com and theonion.com. It seems to ignore photo posts--obviously they wouldn't show up, but it's cool that it doesn't try to load them. It was quite cool.

Skottie, Monday, 14 April 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Then it's going through Google's HTML to WAP convertor, so it's nothing special about our site. I used to regularly use a Psion organiser + mobile phone to browse - it works pretty well, and you can login kinda, and post.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

The concept of "WAP" and "enable" being used together baffles me.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 07:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

The concept of "WAP" and "enable" being used together baffles me.
-- Mark C (boyincorduro...), April 15th, 2003.

Yeah, okay, sorry. But I think that was my point. I could actually read something I wanted to on my phone.

Skottie, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 08:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do we really need separate Pee Chronicles and Urine categories?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

That does seem pretty unneccessary.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Only "pretty"? Clearly it's a fool's errand trying to find a book in your library.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does she use the Poo-ey Decimal System?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

can a kind moderator out there re-size the picture I posted on this thread: Supermarkets. Sorry about that.

hstencil, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, I've been meaning to ask for ages whether someone can combine the IL* Events and ILX Events categories, as I'm forever searching in the wrong one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham sorry for the urinary overlap; that was me last nite in a pique of pee. I shall deal with it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

and hstencil I'm leaving your big image. Resizing it won't reduce the file size at all. Besides it looks funny like that.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

pretty please if one of you has a moment, delete my first three (!!) attempts to post a pic on the new "whatcha look like" thread - I think the last one works, though

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

um, if someone has a moment can they please go into the ALL CAPS thread on ILM and do something about the post directed towards me? I don't give a shit if you delete it, but I want to know who the hell this is if there's any way to find out.

If you want to delete it that'd be cool too.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

(bump)

pretty U&K if anyone's up

jones (actual), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ally: done

felicity (felicity), Friday, 18 April 2003 05:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

thank you.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 05:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

can someone delete this botched post?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

what botched post?

(done)

felicity (felicity), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can someone please go to this thread and A) delete the posts with my name I didn't make (the ones with the "garance80@yahoo.com") email B) please find out who is posting as me?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why are all the threads getting creepy?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

FYI I have just registered the fake Ally that they are posting as, because it IS one of my old email addresses so I don't feel dodgy doing it, so maybe that will curtail it.

Ally. (fakeally), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Removed.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alex is OTM about creepiness, I think it's getting time for me to remove myself from ILX again.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's too bad. :-(

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it's getting time for me to remove myself from ILX again.

Gawd, that would suck. Can't you post under an assumed mane for a while?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

gah "assumed mane" = "assumed name"!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

I almost threw up over something that was posted about me over the weekend. Between that and this I'm genuinely bothered.

Haha I will post to ILX with a fabulous wig, I have a really nice black one I could wear.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hope you don't get driven away, Ally. We'd miss you terribly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, don't let a stupid impostercon scare you away.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

This place has gotten really depressing lately.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know - can anything be done abt it? Ally, moderators are here to deal w/any creepy shit that is thrown in your direction. Stick around, please!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes indeed! Don't leave, we will track down the evil.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Reading the start of a rape fantasy about yourself = not condusive to staying on a message board.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's the depressing bit, the mass defection from ilxor. Some people foolishly believe that a few trolls and psychopaths don't affect the board, but stuff like this points to the fact that it does.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

rape fantasy? wtf? who pulled that shit?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have no idea who is pulling it, and that's why it's freaking me out.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's just a wee bit too graphic to be even remotely considered "funny" and/or "harmless."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Agreed. Time to circle the wagons me thinks.... I feel mad too.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mm, now I remember the post. I'm not surprised at Ally for feeling the way she does at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Did anyone check the IP address before deleting it?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

where the hell is it? whats the ip of the poster?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

time to take some muthafukkas out me thinks

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, it's the same person who posted a picture of me in the "Show your visage" thread or whatever, the one that was a really old pic of me and was captioned "THis is who I'd like to be...or rock the casbah with" something like that. I've got a psycho net stalker, charming. That was for the ones pretending to be me, I don't know who the rape guy was.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

ps: Ally - please don't go, so saith Londonbeat. You know we totally gotyer back girl.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, listen to Londonbeat. James speaks wise words.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wow. Graham's impersonation of an 8-year-old is uncanny. I have an oversized Izod shirt he can wear to complete the effect.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sean, I think he meant me - it was in response to my post.

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

What do you think Mr. Goatfish?

http://www.fishtaxidermist.com/images/mutton.jpg
I think Graham needs to learn how to be more tactful.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm also quite keen to think the worst of anyone who'd call Alan "some buffoon".

No, that bit was great!

This is a shot in the dark, but it may be because you seem to be clinically disturbed

This is the nub of it. I don't think there's any point in trying to impress upon Graham anymore what is normal behaviour that doesn't alienate people. He just can't see it. Or in trying to give advice on how to live his life. He is not ready for it. I hesitate to say all this publically, Graham, but it may serve to discourage fruitless ILX stuff about you every rearing its head every so often, be it well-intentioned friendly advice or exasperated hostility. You need help from a professional. I think you have already sort of pursued this and been disappointed, and I know it is a maze and underfunded and everything else, but I don't think you cannot get what you need here and us all (inc. you) banging our heads against the wall here is not helping anything.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

No I get it Nick. It's just everyone else (ie RickyT) seems determined to go on treating me like a leper. So why not let him? It's fun for everyone, I think you'll agree.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm not sure what you think you get Graham.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Perhaps you shouldn't spend so much time painstakingly painting on your leper's spots.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you are referring to my refusal to answer your AIM's it's because I don't think I can talk to you in a non-private medium right now without ranting.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

This and that, Nick.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Non-private = non-public above. I need to go home.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, you are once again behaving in appalling fashion. EVERY crime that you are accusing others of, you have committed to me. I've spent quite a lot of time and trouble talking to you, including times when you were desperately unhappy - and you have turned your back on me and walked away when someone younger and female and cute has walked in. I have sent you more than one friendly email, and received no replies at all. You have insulted me on the board here. I have taken all this because you are a troubled young man and I'd like to help, largely in gratitude for the huge contributions you have made for the running of this board. That's why I've bought you quite a few drinks at FAPs, and why I haven't moaned that you've never offered to buy me one. My best efforts don't mean that you should treat me as a friend or like me - you're perfectly free to think me an old tosser and want nothing to do with me - but if you treat people a hundred times worse than they treat you, your room for legitimate complaint is very small.

This row did not start from your being mistreated in any way. Alan tried out something he thought might work. He's a very clever and skilled man, and it did little if any harm as far as I could see, and there was certainly nothing wrong in his giving it a try - a lot of SQL performance issues can only really be settled by trying them out in real conditions. If there was really a slowdown in performance, why not just tell him so in an email and either of you could have switched back (or tried something new again, whatever). Why insult him publicly? The worst he did was make an entirely understandable mistake while trying to improve matters. You might be a better coder than Alan, I wouldn't know, but I have a job where I am currently basically in charge of and supervising a number of programmers and helping them write better code, including tuning their SQL and so on, and I would never treat any of these people the way you have behaved here. I'd expect real disciplinary trouble if any senior person behaved that way, and the fact that there is no such structure here doesn't make your actions any better.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 13 June 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

However many times a day Graham is getting his ass kicked at school, it isn't enough.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 13 June 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, please, the world does not owe you a living. In the past you have abused or ignored many many people who offered you help and friendship, why in the name of God should they now kow tow to you?

Fuck this, I'm taking it to e-mail. I'm too angry.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't find thread IV.

So I guess I should have known better than to open a thread called "tongue splitting: C/D" if I didn't want to see a huge pic of, well, a split tongue. Maybe I'm stupid and oversensitive, but maybe there should be a warning? Eek ick ack uck.

Okay, I've been thinking about this a lot and talking to some people, and I'd like to apologise to Alan for trying to help. And to Mark and Martin and Vicky and Anna and everyone else who's tried their best with me. I'm sorry.
