unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 18 October 2002 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is currently not close to me.

It inspired "The Lord Of The Rings" with it's rankness (Mordor=Birmingham Shire=nice bits near birmingham)

It was at the epicentre of one of the largest earthquakes in the UK for many years around 1 month ago. Maybe in a couple of decades, the whole place will have collapsed?

Paul (rigel), Friday, 18 October 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the accent!

Also Mike Skinner.

Graham I sympathise - I've been caught between connections at B. New Street on occasion and it is FKN HORRIBLE.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 18 October 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I always have a good time when I go to Birmingham. And there's a good record shop which I forget the name of. And there's several decent Brummie rap acts.

Kevin Rowland.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 18 October 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It is quite a big city.

Madchen, Friday, 18 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Duran Duran, clearly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

There are some lovely paintings in the art gallery.

I really like Birmingham.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 18 October 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

is Birmingham backwards and web retarded? second biggest city in the UK, and to my knowledge zero ILXORS? unless there are LURKERS !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

You might as well say the French and Germans are web-retarded.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

something positive 3 premier league clubs: Bluenose Brum City, Aston claret Villa, and West "Baggie" Bromich Albion (well nearby, just north of Birmingham)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Birmingham: so much to answer for

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

There are GERMANS on ILXOR, Dastoor ! as for da French there too busy drinking wine, scoffing bread and croissants and driving around in Renaults and Citroens. The French have Minitel.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

There's only one real German, isn't there?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

no ! Siegbran trance n metal dude, and Alex i am an "Alt.Country" fan in Mainhatten

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh - I don't know about the trance n metal dude. I don't know much about ILM generally. I should be stripped of my moderator badge. Actually, I suppose I already have been - OI!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, Anna is from Birmingham environs.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I currently live and study in Brum, ta.

It isn't Croydon, the record shops are alright, and I can get on the student radio here.

That said, the public transport is shit, and Digbeth Coach Station... jesus fucking fuck...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Furthermore, there's Cold Rice (www.coldrice.com), which I may not have said how brilliant it is yet.

So now, I shall say that it is brilliant. Cos it is.

There's also the Medicine Bar and the Academy, which are both alright.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Birmingham is beautiful. Do you eat chocolate? At all? Ever? Then drop to your knees and give thanks for the Choccy factory in Bournville. Mecca for choc related products in the UK.

And, I'm seeing Morrissey in Brum in a coupla weeks! Bostin ay it?

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 18 October 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

siegbran isn't german though is he?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 18 October 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Anna may be offended! She is from Wolverhampton, if I remember etc.

I was asked to go to a 3-day midweek conference in Birmingham this December. I have managed to talk my way out of it. I told my boss that it would be much more professionally rewarding if it were in Rio, and to ask me again if they move it there next year.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 18 October 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to university in (sorta) Coventry, so I used to go to Birmingham every now and then for shopping and gigs etc. And it was fine! Bits of the town centre have imposing, dignified buildings just like London, Glasgow, Manchester, the shops are just as good, and the Hummingbird used to be a wicked venue - I fell asleep at a Sonic Youth gig there.

But then again, I was comparing it to Cov.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 18 October 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth "siegbran isn't german though is he?"

If ain't German - then what: Swiss speaking German? Austrian ? Dutch? Danish? [my money is on German]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 18 October 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"the Hummingbird used to be a wicked venue"

Yeah, it's now Birmingham Acadamy. Best live venue in the country. Bar none.

DavidM (DavidM), Saturday, 19 October 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I can say "Birmingham" in a way that makes me smile. (it involves rolling r's and overemphasising the 'gham' bit.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 19 October 2002 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Cat Deeley comes from Dudley, and she's quite pretty.

C J (C J), Saturday, 19 October 2002 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

No, she is 'lovely'.

I think Anna may be offended! She is from Wolverhampton, if I remember etc.

Well I did say 'environs'. They're almost joined up, after all. I think it's somewhere outside Wolverhampton in fact.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't Anna mention Staffordshire origins the other day? Although for all I know Wolverhampton *is* in Staffordshire.

Birmingham has gone right downhill since the Bull Ring bit the dust.

Big Youth was of the opinion that Birmingham was 'the dreadest town inna England', so that's that settled.

I too have fallen asleep to Sonic Youth's live meanderings, and very nice it was too. But it was Leicester, not Birmingham.

Weren't Musical Youth Brummies too?

The people have a reputation for moaning a lot, which could tip the balance either way.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I am thinking that Anna's origins are increasingly mysterious.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

environs narrowed down:

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I have ruled on Saturn

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I have ruled out everywhere outisde the Wolverhampton environs.

Dot, Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the city of Birmingham.

Birmingham City, on the other hand, are a pustulent ulcer on the forehead of football.

My sister lived there for a couple of years. She liked it, generally. It reminded her of Pittsburgh (post-industrial working class city gets comely make-over).
