I think you know what I'm talking about.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Full, grammatical thoughts only, guys.

My stomach is howling for lunch. It's half past two and this is only a start to my thumb-twiddling. (Till six).

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you talking about correct pair kerning?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Mandatory snipping of Graham's post! Sorry Graham!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Alas Sam this looks like not catching on :(

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's too hard. my login to yahoo will ruin any good work. i'll think on.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I fully dig OuLiPo - it looks to moi as though it's about a kind of cryptic crossword thrill... no doubt i am missing out. (Although I like Q's Zazi book, and Calvino's youthful, funny stuff)... I think Don B's stuff is sort of Oulipoian but I dont find it as irritating.)

(I think Sam's point is writing a post without a common typographic symbol, such as this, Graham a la 'A Void')

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

*shrug*

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

why do you think that such linguistic acrobatics would catch on in ILX? This board has hit rock bottom. :-)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Arrgh! LikE! :( That will teach me to be charitable :(

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

O say do you by the dawn's light what so proudly by the twilight's last

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Methinks the concept needs explaining. What is a glyph? Google doesn't help, I assume it's some kind of symbol (hyroglphs). Oh maybe it's a picture thread of just talking in pictures?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

O shit! A solitary symbol got through.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary had a lamb its as as snow
And that Mary that lamb was to go

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

jack horner in the corner

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

God's turban. You all suck at this.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

No, that should go 'Jack in the'

But that's also not it. It's about making fairly grammatical stuff which avoids a common symbol which is actually world's most known, but arbitrarily unusable. Difficult to do!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

You want to put a small thorn on an important button, to stop you doing that.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not that hard, actually. You can talk for a fairly long amount and not put anything on that particular button.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Without doubt, but your focus on avoiding that button only adds to your difficulty in thinking of anything to say.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Ambition lays kings and politicians low - churls such as us should try humility, and maintain short postings.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I DON'T GET IT!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

ON MISSY'S "WORK IT" SONG I THINK MANY WORDS GO BACKWARDS WHAT IS MISSY SAYING???

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, I know: talk about VIC* MAGAZIN*. Only all Void-ily.

Sarah: Alan = "Alan Truwartha" = what sign is Alan avoiding?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Lady if you hafta ask...

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco stars in words != playing fair!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

That's right. If you do this stuff, you must do it with no slop. A task such as this is not for wimps.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

You shouldn't worry too much about OuLiPo's 'scaffolding' (RQ's word, I think): if a book's writing isn't good, that's a fail. It should work as a work.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

No, you punks, it was only a bid for discussion. I want to find out how a raging discussion of said glossy would sound sans *s.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

So yr posting things without the symbol 'e'? YAR!! Might I pass on this THORT: obtain a living?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

To discuss that rag wouldn't tax too much. You'd talk about "colour", though, which is a word that says too much (or nothing at all).

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

(In fact, possibly a particular ILX individual could do a full translation of that Vic topic.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

what starry said!

andy

koogs, Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

You punk-ass girl-dogs can go howl in a ditch.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco is right. Writing this way is fun and you must think hard.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

...although I do not favour Nabisco's insult. That was, I think, too harsh.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Starry is an adult and can shrug off slurs without harm. And Momus and JTN - back to this discussion with you both! A solo slip should not dismay you so much!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't viddy; what is import of this colour that is to sit unsaid? O no, I look again and it is obvious; Colin is right. And Nabsico is right too; it is thinking of what to say that hurts, not so much how to say it. Sadly, nor Colin nor Nip nor I sport apt naming for this, hm?

Ellie (Ellie), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

May all of us call you "Plancho" for this discussion's duration?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

It's this thing.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Linguistic hobbling: akin to a lit-olympics for kids with a disability?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh if you must, although it sounds so similar to a football playing man. I had not priorly thought of my own 'I' in this light!

(Circumlocutions growing clumsy now).

Ellie (Ellie), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Now let's talk about pair kerning.

And ligatures, ooh ligatures!

Graham (graham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It's this thing.

(Right, right, and following that, the Sapphic actions.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, what do you think of VOLT?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco owns this, uh, string!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

This obviously is not the kind of discussion I would want to regularly maintain in that the typing lack is causing much in the way of frustration.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Nabisco, bad glyph must not sound. "Following that, Sapphic actions occur amongst all."

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, nothing.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

But not using A is not as difficult as not using this missing glyph.

You don't dig fun!

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, always nothing but ass on his mind.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Today has thus far run wondrously: morning mail's happy arrival brought a copy of "Non-Fiction Accounts of Adoration," an album by that nu-waif prankist John of a Jilting. I am glad to find this discussion springing back to activity!

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, cockmunching would also work. But not at work (thanks to that "don't harrass" policy). I don't know why you always slight that mighty phallus!

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(It is obvious that I am so into this fun that soon this discussion will outdo that "can you know if a guy is gay or not without him saying it" discussion w/r/t how many posts it has. I'm sorry.)

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I would say "cock gnaw".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

void* this_thread(person* me);

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Donut Bitch OWNZ (naughty glyph and all)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, lipogram-fans of today may wish to jot this down: author Mark Dunn has, in print, a book known as "(signification for girl) Minnow (signification for carrots' pals)," in which many glyphs gradually lipogram away. It is a passably good book, but probably only if you undergo a particularly short approach to it; it's my suspicion that if I'd worn out a big amount of a clock on it and not simply a day's conclusion, I would find my thoughts not so charitable.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

("worn out a big amount of a clock" = not far away from filth)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think of why you shouldn't add to our naughty vocabulary.

hahahaha "BINGO WINGS"!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think there's anything that isn't 'not far away from filth' for you, Mr. Perry.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Guilty.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabisco, do you know about Christian Bök's book, in which first all words contain A (and not our glyph, I, O, or U); part two has all our glyph (not A, I, O or U); and so on? Folks say good things about that book but I can't find it at my local book shop.

I thought similar things about Abish's Africa book; what I did dig about that book was how his writing was similar using words that start with A and using words that start with any glyph. But it was no A Void.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Abish's was fun, but Chris is right that it is no A Void.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It is so frustrating. I sought, but I did not find said books in my library. Charitably put, it is a most unscholarly institution. Many, if not most, of our books thoroughly lack words (not just a particular symbol) and contain nothing but paintings, drawings or photographs. And you call this a post-high school institution? How can a kid gain any schooling this way?

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Your library ought to own A Void, but you can't usually find Abish and Bök's books so simply. And good luck finding Gadsby!

My local book shop sold Abish's book for just a skosh of cash ($3.98!): if you don't know this Portland book shop's URL, you can click this.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping to hold onto my own cash. But as I apportion bucks for this library, I can buy such things at will. Chris, you can try alibris . I think I saw this Bok book. Hurry!

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! At alibris, you can buy an old, worn copy of Bok's book for $17 -- or pay $12 a copy that nobody has lain hands on! Silly.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is full of perversity that disturbs my tender and fragile sensibilities. You should be ashamed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think what this man is saying is: "This discussion is full of fuckt-up shiznit that puts my mortal mind a-whirl. Carry on."

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww, Sir Ragman is all "boo-hoo, your quim/dick talk is causing my boo-hoo buttons to ping".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I RISE ABOVE SUCH FILTH. To find my own level.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Ned said it, no wait, I said it, aaaaaaaaaaaah.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ragman wants us to ping his boo-hoo buttons? RUN AWAY!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The buttons could be carried by an African swallow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoy that you won't stoop to imitating a guy who follows of this topic, NR.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I would never do that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

BAD GRAMMAR IS MY ALLY.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally doesn't belong to YOU, you punk.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Punk? PUNK????

QUAIL IN FRONT OF MY MIGHTY PHALLUS!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no, tool of the patriach, oh no

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha "tool")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

NR says: Do not constrain my brain! Do not constrain my words! Would you constrain my hair? No! It must flow as Niagara, mighty and moist!

This man, who asks for 26 glyphs (although 25 will obviously do), truly lacks for fun.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

A great philosopher once wrote
Naughty, naughty, very naughty
Ha ha ha ha ha

There's a guy in the place
He's got a bittersweet face
And he goes by the name of Ebeneezer Goode
His friends call him Eezer and he is the main geezer
And he'll vibe about the place like no other man could
He's refined, he's sublime, he makes you feel fine
Though very much maligned and misunderstood
But if you know Eezer he's a real crowd pleaser
He's ever so good, he's Ebeneezer Goode
You can see that he's mischievious, mysterious and devious
When he circulates amongst the people in the place
But once you know he's fun and something of a genius
He gives a grin that goes around from face to face to face
Backwards and then forwards, forwards and then backwards
Eezer is the geezer who loves to muscle in
That's about the time the crowd all shout the name of Eezer
As he's kotcheled in the corner, laughing by the bass bin

Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

Has anybody got any veras
Lovely
Ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha

A great philosopher once wrote
Naughty, naughty, very naughty
Ha ha ha ha ha

Ebeneezer Goode, leading light of the scene
Know what I mean, see
He created the vibe
He takes you for a ride and as if by design
The party ignites like he's comin alive
He takes you to the top, shakes you all around
Then back down, you know as he gets mellow
Then as smooth as the groove that is making you move
He glides into your mind with a sunny Hello
A gentleman of leisure, he's there for your pleasure
But go easy on old Eezer he's the love you could lose
Extraordinary fellow, like Mr. Punchinello
He's the kind of geezer who must never be abused
When you're in town and Ebeneezer is around
You can sense a presence in the sound of the crowd
He gets them all at it, the party starts rocking
The people get excited it's time to shout loud

Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

Got any salmon Sorted
Ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Oh what a carry on, ha ha ha ha ha
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Wicked
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

He's Ebeneezer Goode
Oh what a carry on, ha ha ha ha ha
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Wicked
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

*rereads this thread* Oh good grief, one of these goddamn word game things. Fuck everyone! *sulks*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahahahahahahahihohu.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
An upstart string usurps our bold original - show your true colours, curs!

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, lack of mod-privs is bad. I should say "show your actual colours, curs!"

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

For our Brit ILXors, a new topic: "Don't talk with U", and us U.S. folk will post about "colors" all day long!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Cor I was just thinking about this topic in days past.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this in conjunction with a particular book, Stars?

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Tha Fifth Head Of A Mythical Dog That Was Supposed To Bear two plus a solo cranium? Not that book, nay!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha, I spy Sarah using the wrong glyph.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bollocks. And that was such hard work!

OK!

Tha Fifth Skull Of A Mythical Dog That Shoulda Born Two Skulls Plus One Solo Cranium Also?

That was crap.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No again, Sarah! 1 should stay a digit!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

TITS!!!!!!!!!!

(That works).

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Post without using the letter E.

In this opposition, "old-ILx" and "nu-ILx" show distinguishing traits. Old- follows an obliquity of form and approach; by contrast, nu- lays it all out for you. Which do you favor?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

thirteen years pass...

Is it fun to chat at oulipo.social? Possibly, says 00s hip snark rag's computational branch:

It's as if chirping, but you can't say a particular glyph

(I found a trio of similar post-strands, all ur-old-ILX, and am a bit sorry to mar such classic original discussions with au courant postings, but that's how it is...)

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 13 April 2017 19:51 (eight years ago)

I can has gr8r simplicity of glyph omission in post-txting, post-lolcat days

also ctrl-F highlighting is a boon to compositional validation not to hand as this topic was first thought about by Adair or Francophonic authors, but also probably not for ILX only an unlucky sum of annual rotations ago, if I think back rightly

(circumlocution around a count brings to mind a thing I saw in my Anglo translation of "A Void": GP's original "La Disparition" picks words which fulfil his constraints for counts of things, and "A Void"'s translator holds on to said arbitrary sums writ out as digits, a slightly jarring shortcut)
