i need a desk

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

or, indeed, anygirl? hahah

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, they don't do mailorder so I opted for another shop. A little more expensive and better quality. :-)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, phone Ed. He's been swinging by ikea to and fro from sheffield and will probably be able to help if you know the desk you want.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

ah yes of course!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

No. Ikea is where relationships go to die. You go in happy, you come out having split up/divorced/been murdered.

lol p xx, Monday, 11 November 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

but i am single!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

And why do you think that is?

Graham (graham), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

wrong colour hair dye?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Just moved into new flat and had to buy a load of new stuff, and the weekly 'oh, have to pick up one more thing' syndrome is almost over. I can cope with the fleece-clad smug couples, but it's the SCREAMING ANKLE BITERS which make me want to approach the parents and go, 'you know, Baby Jail is downstairs.'

Graham, don't tell me you're going smug marrieds on us and with no ring!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

No, you runied it for me, remember.

Graham (graham), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to get some furniture. Especially a desk. But then Suzy keeps handing me Ikea catalogues and I look through them for about two minutes before my mind glazes over and I think "well, maybe it's not so bad carrying on with a few milk crates and some Muji boxes... really?"

I do like going to Ikea, though. It's so ... overwhelming. Especially if you go there with design whores like Suzy and my mate Jesse.

kate, Monday, 11 November 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to go but god knows how to get there and how pricey everything is SOB AND ALACK. I would go and probably just end up buying a candle. ACTUALLY I need a dirty clothes bin!

*urrgrh*

*remembers state in which bedroom exists*

I really, really, need somewhere to throw clothes. And some nice SHELVES. Mmm. SHELVES. That don't LIST.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 11 November 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

SHELVES *gibber* IKEA *mumble*

Alan (Alan), Monday, 11 November 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

And what's wrong with here?

Graham (graham), Monday, 11 November 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I need a desk too. I've just realised I've been in university for 2 and a half years and I have had no desk in this time. Still, I can't be bothered to buy one. Desks are boring.

alix (alix), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"would anyboy like to go to IKEA?"

Can anygirl come as well?

Don't buy shelves from IKEA unless you are a rockist. They are overpriced and mostly nasty. Buy random plastic chairs and Daim bars instead.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but BILLY!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

CHUH well RickyT got back from York with about 2984 boxen of BOOKS last night, where are we going to keep them is what i want to know! (ans: underneath all the other crap in his room, tee hee). WE NEED BOOKSHELVES! and IKEA bookshelves RULE, huh huh!

katie (katie), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I got shelves from a big warehouse furniture place called The Dump which look just like the Billy shelves. You still have to assemble them yourself, but anyway... maybe you should check out some el cheapo stores for that sort of thing...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I got shelves in Ikea, £3 a time, with brackets and everyfink included - you can't beat that.

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd like to go to ikea cos i've a new house and need to get lots of things for it, but there isn't one in ireland. apparently some people hire vans and go over on the ferry but i reckon the crap exchange rate would gobble up any great savings. i was once in an ikea in lyon but didn't stay long as my boyfriend got THE FEAR and had to leave.

angela (angela), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Every time I am in Ikea there are thousands upon thousands of Irish people, apparently they do coach tours to Ikea for the day! Did you ever....

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you Veel sorry for the tacky item? Vell your crazy! Tacky items can always be replaced at Ikea.

After witnessing that commercial once I am now very, very scared of Ikea.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Shoot, I was hoping this was an offer to go to the IKEA in Elizabeth.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Or the one out here even! There's an IKEA being built only three blocks away.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i might check out the coach tours thing plinky, thanks for the tip. i wonder do the coaches have enough space for me to bring back a dining room table and chairs, hmm. or maybe ned you could sent me a table and chairs through the post a little bit at a time.

angela (angela), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Easily arranged. There actually is a post office across the street from it, see. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, do they build Ikea stores with glue and massive plastic buttons to cover over protruding screws etc?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"Shoot, I was hoping this was an offer to go to the IKEA in Elizabeth."

There's an IKEA in me? No wonder I feel dreadful today; I've got a warehouse full of semi-disposable Swedish furniture crowding my liver for room.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha, last time I went to IKEA I laughed because they had a product called ALANG.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Calm your breast, Trewartha.

alix (alix), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

This is poetry.

mark s (mark s), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham (graham), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to IKEA at Brent Cross a few weeks back, got a very nice bookcase and a CD storage thingie. But, be warned when you get out of the check out you can't take your stuff round to the car on a trolley as you can't get them out of the loading area! So, you have to bring the car round or lug it by hand.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually did feel sorry for the lamp...

My best friend is an IKEA addict - her entire flat has been furnished from the pages of the catalog, and she knows when it should come in the mail and calls to complain if she doesn't get one.

Stop the Swedish madness!

luna.c (luna.c), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the CD storage unit I got (the book case is of the same design)

jel, its not actually at brent cross though is it? i mean, its neasden surely?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Brent Park, actually. Which is only "near" Brent Cross if you're not walking. My design whore mate Jesse made that mistake ... only once!

kate, Monday, 11 November 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

That's Jesse - caught between Park and Cross.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

luna.c (luna.c), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Listen, I know a girl named Ikea, I kid you not. They got some great commercials, these Swedes, there's one where this couple is going at it and they knock a little cow milk container off the table, and then this Swedish guy runs in and goes, "You feel sad for the little ceramic cow? That is because you are CRAZY!" and then it flashes the Ikea logo. I mean, what is that? Fabelhaft.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"You feel sad for the little ceramic cow? That is because you are CRAZY!" and then it flashes the Ikea logo. I mean, what is that? Fabelhaft

Thats the one I was talking about, except he follows it up with "Tacky items can always be replaced at Ikea". I was severly disturbed byt he commercial. I want it on my desktop NOW!

atomic horseradish (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

g-charlton, you've got a set of Hive Mind keys.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My one Ikea purchase this month was the STRALA lamp, a very cheap ($22) 'fiberoptic' device - it's basically a tiny little central bulb with a bunch of clear plastic fibers emanating from a shell around the bulb that provide a sparkly shell effect (but admittedly not much light). But it's very cool. And when friends come over I call it my own pet name, "Hairy Disco Ball" (to the tune of "Shiny Disco Balls"). If I'm in the mood I'll suggest stroking it.

Dancing Queen, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i will return the keys, and clear up the remainder of my goods in the next couple days.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

StanM, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

I hate going to Ikea, but my husband bought a bookshelf there, and I have to admit that it is working just fine. The only thing I can complain about is that it has a stupid name; it's a "Billy" bookshelf. What the hell does that mean?

Sara R-C, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Their Expedit bookshelves are absolutely perfect for lps. I also bought Ingolf chairs there a month ago and they're great - so easy to put together and sturdy.

Haha! We have some of the Billy shelves for cds.

Jaq, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

ahhahaha everyone has billy bookshelves!! i have two of them.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

Now I want there to be a secret communications room behind the bookshelves. Before I just thought BOOKS!!!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 2 August 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

The thread title question is answered in the affirmative at all times by my wife. Any time, any day. IKEA is one of her Meccas.

I suppose this is better than her discovering the higher-end furniture stores that IKEA emulates and spending three times the money there.

I will go to IKEA, but only on weekdays. Weekends at IKEA are mob scenes.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

For Sara - if you look at the photo large size you can have a virtual dig! It's a bit blurry though.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 3 August 2007 06:54 (eighteen years ago)

It doesn't work so well with the other one.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 3 August 2007 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

And this is section that is next to the second shot. Now you can rummage away at leisure! My collection is, I think, fairly average ilxor fare. There was some thread somewhere where some guy had 10,000 books. That's about 50 Billy bookcases.!

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 3 August 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

My IKEA bed is still incredibly awesome.

IKEA bedframe + IKEA mattress + IKEA mattress foam + IKEA pillows + IKEA pillowsheets + IKEA sheets + IKEA quilt = a good night's sleep.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

choices: crappy loveseat that looks prettier or more functional futon that looks less sleek?

i need some seating up in here. 3 months is enough.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

Klippans are meant to be cheap cheap cheap because of the anniversary, or something?

pow! right in the kisser (suzy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

hmmmmm

gahhhh choices

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

Consider purchasing your futon from a futon store. They'll allow you to compare different futons: amount of cotton wadding vs. open cell rubber foam, even memory foams are now available. Also you'll be able to see and judge the actual wood (finished solid tropical hardwood is the norm). I have one that has survived 16 years and 8 moves and still assembles tightly.

I love IKEA for its housewares and general design aesthetic, but for most furnishings you are getting particle board frames/uprights/shelves. Good until you spill anything, it otherwise gets wet, or the fitting for the hardware gets worn out in a few moves. Their metal framed furnishing is as good as any, I guess, and their commercial office wood furnishings are 5/8" oriented strand board with oak veneers, rather than the the 1/2" photolaminated particle board of a lot of their product.

You Are All Sanpaku (Derelict), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

i had a beddinge for 3 years that i used as a bed. it's alright. it's a metal frame, which is why i was leaning towards that rather than a particle/wadding loveseat. but futons just look so... futony.

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

One of the boys in the loft had a Klippan but I thought it was rly uncomfortable and the wrong scale for me. The arms are too high to actually lean on, and I felt boxed in.

that stupid-ass cannibal pen-pal of yours (Laurel), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

^^ came here to post almost exactly that xxp. wife & i were planning on buying a futon-like sofa from ikea. we just bought a regular futon for like $100 more and it's so, so much better. actually it was a loveseat-style futon. "lounger" or something like that

mark cl, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

okay no it wasn't a 'lounger.' it was basically just a regular futon but loveseat size.

mark cl, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

We bought 2 of these Tullsta chairs to use as reading chairs. They fit perfectly in the space, etc etc, but they are awful to sit in long-term. The foam in the seat cushion is just not up to it. So watch out for that - they rate the foam in lb/cu.ft. and the higher numbers are better.

Jaq, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

ok nm i am going on thursday now. more time to investigate!

tehresa, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

I went to Ikea today and bought a shower curtain, a shower curtain liner, two clothes covers, and two place mats. I got a parking space right in front of the entrance. I didn't mind buying things made of polyester. I was reminded of Ikea's characteristic smell, which is like their blond wood, with an aftertaste, like a Swedish version of McDonald's.

youn, Sunday, 11 October 2009 01:30 (sixteen years ago)
