NYC Pre-FAP Shenanigans (11/30/02) - Suggestions?

I wanna, like, do something on Saturday in NYC before the FAP begins. Something cultural, something that doesn't involve conspicuous consumption, something an open-minded person like myself would enjoy.

Is there anything going on at those museum-type places? Or other places? Would you NYCers care to share? I'll be your best friend...

you could always go get a hot dog off a corner stand. that's pretty cultural....

HAHAHAHAHA dude, I was so hoping this was going to be more along the lines of drinking to get fired up for the FAP. Then we'd be so derelict.

Why don't you just go read Time Out NY or the Voice like everyone else, David? What do we look like, 411? I don't memorize cultural happenings!

y'all could have seen the Moomin Voices playing live at some Swedish church for free last month.

May I suggest NOT going to Rockefeller Center?:

Maybe that's what he's coming here specifically for.

I think it was decided to do it at Halcyon in Brooklyn.

Ally knows me all too well.

But, see, the reason I ask is because I forgot about TONY & the Voice. Thank you, ILE! (Please note that I also appreciate Matos' moxie.)

Top five free art shows in NYC right now:

1. Thomas Hirschhorn at Barbara Gladstone, (515 W24th St): it's a big cave made of cardboard and duct tape and has an Adorno / dynamite thing going on!

2. Tom Sachs at Bohen (415 W13th St): it's bits of a goofy fantasy town, but the Do Not Touch! Scientific Experiment! is funny and I wound up wondering whether he was really using Scalextric to critique Le Corbusier.

3. Hakuk Akakce at the Whitney @ Philip Morris (120 Park Ave at 42nd St): very little in the way of content, but beautiful. The big brown bag outside is good fun, too.

4. Alfredo Jaar at Galerie Lalong (528 W23rd St). Kind of right-on but kind of affecting too. Not sure what the big tables were all about.

5. Mona Hatoum at Alexander & Bonin, 132 Tenth Ave: I wuv Mona. And I wuv cheese graters.

Lots of other good stuff around too, obv. I notice I've not included any painting: I mean, painting? In this day & age? The Chuck Close was good, but only close-up.

Also U&K but not free: the Bill Viola at the Guggenheim. This is a flat-out masterpiece, but be prepared to set aside at least 45 minutes to see it through (it's on a 35 minute loop).

Avoid: that Cy Twombly show: skribbled barrel-scrapings.

Wrong thread, Mike.
