What the hell is ATP?
Who the hell is Joe Rogan?
Who the hell is [insert 80's indie band here]?
What the hell is post-structuralism?
Why the hell is Thomas Pynchon?

Post-structuralism

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Thomas Pynchon? Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Nipper to Berkeley!

Thomas Pynchon is JD Salinger wearing his nicer pants.

FAP

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

FAP = Fancy a Pint?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

no offence, but I've been getting confused by the number of Aaron's on ILX! There is 3, yes?

b*ngb*s is some porno thing, that's been google proofed.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahhhh, the joy of not being British...

What does Mentalism mean on ILX?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think 3... Aaron A, Aaron W, and me. On the Greenspun boards, I used Aaron G! as a name, but I thought that it might be better to be more specific in order to make room for other Aarons, especially any Aarons with a last name beginning with G.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Since when did anyone mention Joe Rogan on this board?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V has become mildly obsessed with him (and "Fear Factor").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, yes I have.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

About as mildly obsessed as you with the Outhere Brothers.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh. (I almost added "and eating penis." but figured that it would be misconstrued.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

sure would.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe mentalism derives from an episode of Alan Partridge (first series) where he meets an obsessive fan, and at the end calls him a 'mentalist' (=madman), so mentalism is craziness of one kind or another.

It's ILM that throws me most. What is undie rap?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it involves backpacks, martin ;-)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Not rhyming about underwear, then? And what about IDM? What does that stand for?

(Yes, I realise I am 43 and not supposed to know such things, but I want to be with it and down with all you kids with your White Strokes and Missy Eminem and One True Aloud.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

IDM = "intelligent" dance music

Aphex Twin and friends.... some feel it has racist connotations

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Others stick to the less controversial few that it's shit.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

IDM = intelligent dance music. it is a genre that started in the early 90s when Warp released the Artificial intelligence series. the idea of the music is that it borrows from techno/house and other danceable forms of electronic music, and makes music for sitting at home. IDM came way before the current vogue for chill out music.
the term "intelligent" can either be read as condescending or not. I used to listen to a lot of IDM, and I never felt compelled to be a snob.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It also stole its acronym from industrial dance music (Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Nine Inch Nails, certain Coil and Severed Heads and SPK, etc).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd therefore like to register my appreciation for SDM, meaning stupid dance music. I was talking about happy hardcore with Gareth at the last FAP/bar billiards championship. I love it, and there is none more stupid.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan, generally.

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

what is "twee", anyway?

(the word, not "list things that are twee"--unless it would help define).

All that sex and the bad haircuts, I don't like it, and what's with the drugs there, I only go for the legal ones okay.

Tom Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent...thanks Nick, all confusion is cleared away.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Gee, Chris does say Joe Rogan a lot.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

could be worse, he could've got obsessed with the Predator's penis instead.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 December 2002 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

why people post threads that could only be relevant to hose in the immediate geographic area - ie if I posted a thread, did you see what happened with sandra sulley last night? I don't read them, it just puzzles me somewhat, seems a waste of the net...but fuck it, I like the threads about body hair so who am I to talk.

Queen G (Queeng), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The firewall hear at work forbids me to see that joe rogan page. He must be a naughty old josser.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan, no, no, no, since it does not include cj boland. heh! (then again he's belgian so... uh HEY look my brain just flew outa the window!)

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder. it could be worse, like g-kit said. I could obsess over the predators penis.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there that much difference between the two?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! What's with the oh nos'? Oh no!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

- ie if I posted a thread, did you see what happened with sandra sulley last night?

but i live in liverpool england and i know she's that cute aussie newsreader w/ the ridiculous deep voice.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin, Undie Rap is like, um, 'underground' rap. Def Jux, Anticon, etc.

OCP (OCP), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I have *never* noticed her having a deep voice. Surely Jana's is deeper? Also, I don't reckon she's as cute as other's make out. I mean, crikey, if 10 out of 10 is perfect she'd only just squeeze in at a 7.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

she is easily an 8. toraneko, i remember you saying that you'd seen the film 'garage days' i was an extra in it! is there a scene where a load of day-glo clad ravers come running out of a warehouse and are violently sick due to bad drugs? i doubt if it's coming out in the u.k. but i'd just like to know that those 12 mouthfuls of cold custard and carrots were not for nothing.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

now I'd fuck jana. My grams used to be best friends with jana's mother in law, until she died. not my grans, and not jana, but her m other in law.

Queen G (Queeng), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

TELL ME ABOUT 'GARAGE DAYS'!!

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

jana is beautiful. i like sandra sulley's kinky mouth too, but she's just not in jana's league.
i saw garage days and i remember that bit. custard and carrots!!

minna (minna), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

it wasn't in vain! thanks minna!

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Who'd have thought bad drugs were actually custard and carrots.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)
