Does this word really come from an imitation of a child saying 'sweet?' And what is twee? Just another indie sub-heading like postrock? Perhaps this should go on ILM, but pff.

curious in Illinois, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "twee" is just shorthand for "twink", which implies an entirely different context. (heh heh... all right, don't you guys get all P.C. with me, now... I'm just'a teasin')

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard it is derived from "sweet" and was not coined regarding music specifically, but for anything that is cutesy or overly precious. I have an architecture book by English author Rayner Banham from the 70s that uses the word. In reference to the restoration of Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco as a shopping area, he said it was "twee, but alive" meaning it was polished up quite a bit (it used to be a cannery, I think), but at least it was still a functioning structure.

nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I use it in relation to whatever merits it, not specifically music. I've always unconsciously associated it with "tiny" and "wee" rather than "sweet" though.

Maria, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how. to. be. twee.:

1. buy an expensive pen,

2. close your eyes

3. draw a little heart

4. stare at it intently; romanticize your childhood.

emo-boy shame and twee-girl infantilism go hand in hand

gabe, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like twee-pop...sorta of whimsical. After all the years I spent at the Tweekitten website, I'm still a bit unsure as to waht it exactly entails.

james, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

According to dictionary.com, it means either "Overly precious or nice" which is pretty good, or "dainty, mincing" which is not tweeness at all. Enid Blyton is twee, Oscar Wilde not so much.

Sam, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's not fair, gabe. there are twee boys, too. most of them wear cardigan sweaters and don't think twice about breaking hearts that aren't their own.

maura, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the OED usage file on it:

1. Originally: ‘sweet’, dainty, chic. Now only in depreciatory use: affectedly dainty or quaint; over-nice, over-refined, precious, mawkish. (Maura might be interested to hear that the secondary definition reads simply: "Dave Knapick." 1905 Punch 8 Mar. 178/1, ‘I call him perfectly twee!’ persisted Phyllis. 1917 M. T. HAINSSELIN Grand Fleet Days xv. 91 Girl: Oh, here's another little gun; isn't it a darling! Isn't it just too twee for words! 1947 E. HYAMS William Medium viii. 164 ‘Isn't he twee!’ said Mary, and pinched his cheek. 1956 G. DURRELL Drunken Forest x. 193 ‘What twee individuals?’ ‘Those knowledgeable sentimentalists who are forever telling me that it's cruel to lock up the poor wild creatures in little wooden boxes.’ 1962 Observer 25 Mar. 25/3 She has a small and, it must be said, pretty twee cottage. 1967 E. SHORT Embroidery & Fabric Collage iv. 102 The best of our designers who have abandoned the rather ‘twee’ decorative type of embroidered picture. 1973 G. ROBYNS Wimbledon xxix. 192 There is..a twee Arcadian outdoor studio complete with white trellis and plastic flowers. 1983 Listener 21 July 33/1 Mike Nichols's thriller- fantasy about dolphins should be as nauseatingly twee as the worst Disney--but it isn't.

Nitsuh, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now only in depreciatory use:

I think the OED writers need to spend some time on the American indiepop scene. Or the Sinister list. I got bored of banging on about how 'twee' was not a fucking recommendation.

Nick, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty certain its proper use is as a pejorative.

Sean, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well yeah, I agree. I'm just saying that in certain circles its use as a word of positive valence has reached some sort of critical mass. I was never sure if people like twee.net thought they were reclaiming the word or whether they were just confused.

Nick, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes maura there are twee boys. i can be twee. i also wear cardigans, which embarrasses me sometimes.

and I accidently broke someone's heart once...

there is a tendency in emo to be ashamed of one's maleness, and about sex in general- twee, then, provides an escape from both. you can be a kid forever! the problem is that sexually frustrated and ashamed boys who approach tweeness often do so as a sort of escape from sexuality (so do girls i suppose) and from the pain of dealing with the unpleasant aspects of maleness- avoidance, basically. Its fun to be a kid! but painful cognitive dissonance between your cute twee exterior and your unrecognized misogyny is NOT fun, and it is not twee. so while twee-boys might see their tweeness as a sort of inverse- riot-grrl refusal of traditional gender roles, in a sense they're engaging in a repression of internal (and external) conflict that is practically reactionary.

ugh. i'm tired. am i making any sense?

gabe, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some of my real word chums try to tell me I'm twee, I am so fucking not. it's all relative

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't decide if I'm twee or not. I like cats and pop music and I love my girlfriend, but I also like to swear a lot and drink beer and listen to noise music and distortion. Help me in my confusion please.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want everyone to know that I'm FAR more twee on ilx than in real life.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a bit like NA but I prefer hip hop and R&B to noisy music. I appreciate sensitivity and kindness, that's all.

oh yes, novelty animal gloves are the NEW KYLIE!

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I've come to regard twee as being things that are superficially cute/sweet. Whether this "cuteness" reaches the inner core of the thing, I'm not convinced. I don't think twee can be used to describe personality traits.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny should be tweeny!

i think im giving up on twee.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't decide if I'm twee or not. I like cats and pop music and I love my girlfriend, but I also like to swear a lot and drink beer and listen to noise music and distortion. Help me in my confusion please.

So you record an album of noisy, distorted pop, full of expletive-songs about drinking beer and you and your girlfriend's cats -- nü twee or tweecore or twëë.

Merzböys to thread!

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

even his dreams are twee!

I had a dream last night that my family was in a spaceship that crashed on an alien planet covered in dune-like mounds that were the consistency of meringue, or maybe slightly harder. A friendly female alien came and took my family to the alien city, which was enclosed in glass walls, like the biosphere. It had different levels, the bottom level was the residential area. Then we went up to the second level by sitting on floating chairs. This was the business area, and it looked like a combination of a mall food court and a busy Hong Kong street. Yanc3y was there, and he was eating pizza. We started talking about how he grew up in Malaysia and I grew up in India and the differences and similarities (note, IRL I did grow up in India but I don't think Yanc3y grew up in Malaysia). That's about all I remember.
