I like East Coast prep school style. I like teenage Japanese style. I like books. I like CDs. Where should I go?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Religion?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The East Coast. Japan? A Bookshop. A CD Shop.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Who ever said ILx was full of smartarses?

Books: taking sides: libraries vs. bookshops
CDs: record shopping in london (the short answer for those with limited time is Berwick St)
Style: I have no idea, shocking though that may be.

Shouldn't you be more interested in clearing space in people's hectic social schedules for the compulsory FAP, Mary?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearing space? You mean, people won't just drop everything for the chance to meet Mary and felicity?

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Japanese teenage - do the markets. Camden on Saturdays and Sundays (best day), Portobello early on Fridays (best) and Saturdays and Brick Lane on Saturday and Sundays (don't go often enough to pick out best day.)

Preppy - you got me. Gap? (Eeew)

Go to the big Top Shop in Oxford Circus whatever you like, because it's huge and really cheap. Best place for semi-disposable-doesn't-matter-if-it-dates fashion stuff. It's the epitome of Brit girl high street shopping.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, come and see us. I'll even take you two shopping.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, shopping with Anna

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

So when are you fellows visiting?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be visiting Jan. 16-20. Would love to FAP if people have time. Will start thread once ticket safely in hand. Tim: what good exhibitions are there?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Monmouth St, I got a great cardigan in the pm sample sale, Conduit St (aspirational, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yammamoto). Neal st for shoes. Grenwich market can be good for manga t-shirts, as can the various cyberdogs (techno wear). You can try wink and hoxton boutique if you don't mind looking daft. Selfridges is the best department store for fashion. There are some good charity shops round marlybone. South Moulton street.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed! this guy I know had a cool hoody that he said was made by Religion and he got it in London. What do you know about this "Religion"?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hoxton boutique if you don't mind looking daft
Hey! I have a couple of tops from Hoxton Boutique.

Also, end of January = end of Selfridges sale. (Actually I bought a Hoxton Boutique top there last year)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know nothing about that religion, I do know where you can get jesus action figures from though.

Magma have good t-shirts, yoshitomo naro, james hawes, and others, over the road from me.

Maharishi is on floral street, their men's stuff is crap at the moment, but they have some great jackets for girls just now

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's dolly rockers in london I got my sister a great top from their concession in the manchester selfridges. That'd be good too even if all they do is just chop up vintage clothes.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Any nice toy/character stores?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

There used to be a sizable Dolly Rockers in the Stables part of Camden market. They sold proper vintage, as well as the chopped up stuff. I loved it. I've got loads of Dolly Rockers things. But then it vanished when they redevolped that part. There is a concession downstairs in Oxford Circus Top Shop though.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

There's forbidden planet on new oxford st but there's plenty here far more qualified to answer that question

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Mararishi the snowboarding stuff? I like the camo-trimmed jackets they did a few years back, sorry to hear it's crap now.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Its definately not snowboarding stuff now, that kind of style. I have a good jacket from 18 months ago. Some of the girls stuff is good the boiys stuff is crap. They do kids clothes now, read into that what you will.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I would think Mary could find some EastCoastPrepSchoolStyle in London's charity shops. I know we've done this, but any particular recommendations for box pleated skirts and knits?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

marlybone, lots of rich people so lots of good quality thrift.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

See also Highgate, although it's not as central.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be visiting Jan. 16-20. Would love to FAP if people have time.

If?? Mary, trust me, these fair folk will find the time! Another New Yorker? The more, the merrier! I'll be glad to see ya....though looks like I'm off to Florida on the 20th (for a week....).

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you desire from an FAP location? I suggest the pub I live on top of but then I'm lazy.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this the time or the place to break out the South London vs. North London war? I'm not sure that I desire anything in particular from a FAP location, but I'm sure others have good ideas on this subject...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

central is best for everyone, but the choice is really pub/bar, standard/real ale, Sam Smiths or not, bar billiards, pool, table football.

Its your FAP your shout.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like to play sports games, so bar billiards etc. won't be necessary for me...what's pub vs. bar, standard v. real ale, stan smiths? How about something faux-Victorian?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Stan Smiths: ha ha! This is the shopping thread after all...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There are a few pubs very convenient for the Oxford Street/Charing Cross Road/Berwick Street area (this covers nearly all the best music and book shopping, and probably some good clothes shopping too. And there are at least three shops for comics and associated merchandise nearby too. Sam Smiths is cheap, in case that's a puzzler.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Where Madchen had her FAP the other day was good - just behind Tottenham Court Road station, wasn't it? And there were arrers for those that way inclined.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Arrers?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

London pronunciation of 'arrows', ie darts

David (David), Monday, 6 January 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I really think some sort of mega-blowout Mary / Felicity / Anna / Suzy shopping event needs to be organized. (With results photographed and scanned and transformed into some sort of Flash-based drag-and-drop dress-you-up game.)

I have this feeling there might be an ongoing "American Invasion" Londo-FAP trend this spring.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 6 January 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Great!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 6 January 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

a drag dress-up game? sounds fun

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam smiths are probably the most trad pubs in london, verylittle compromise to modernisation which is good. Trouble is their beer is bloody awful.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

FITE!

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I like trad!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

trad victorian/edwardian/inter-war?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed you are so very very wrong about OB, it's a fine bitter. And a lot of people swear by the fat man around these parts. Admittedly, their own brand cola is sh!te.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, for Japanese preppy clothes you need Muji and Uniqlo. The latter is cheap, cheap, cheap.

Remember also the SALES are on: your opportunity to go 30 to 50 per cent more wild than usual.

When I'm not skint I head to Antoni and Alison just down my street, then walk into Covent Garden and ::drool:: in Monmouth Street (three good vintage and Koh Samui, for ideas), then into Earlham Street for a quick look in Jungle and at Fiona's stall (she used to run a shop called Sign of the Times) with good accessories and Japanese stuff. Crossing to Soho, I swing into Kokon to Zai (Greek or Frith Street) to look at Japanese tat and directional designers (the real manga tat is in Chinatown, where I would normally head for dim sum). Then I go for Brewer Street, where Shop is. I cut up to Broadwick Street and check The Pineal Eye, the most experimental shop in London and also home of a really good sale right now. Further down the street, Michiko Koshino. Beak Street and environs behind Carnaby Street have mazes of great little shops eg. Dispensary. Conduit Street has the Japanese designers plus Mandarina Duck, Vivienne Westwood and Sketch, the most hyperstylised place to have tea right now.

My charity shop choices are the bomb as I know which ones are near Vogue, and there are a couple of thrift store/vintage places in more outlying areas like 162 on Holloway Road. Brick Lane on Sunday allows you to do the Shoreditch boutiques as well; Wink is good but way picked over because of its sale.

Also Time Out has a guide to sales during this season which will highlight loads of things I've missed and I've just checked and my Koh Samui discount card still works.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Uniqlo has big, ankle length coats for nine quid at the moment!!!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My recommendations for art shows that week/end:
1. Gormley (and Durer if you're that way inclined) at the British Museum: "Field" is one of my favourite things ever.
2. "Marsyas", the great big Anish Kapoor at the Tate Modern. It's enormous and it's red, how could it be bad? And the Tate Modern's permanent collection of course: Cornelia Parker's shed would probably be the first thing I headed for in London. While you're in the area, and if you have a little while to spare, maybe pop down to the Essor to see some pleasant Thomas Ruff snaps (some in cute boxes with mirrors) and a fabulous Johan Gimonprez video which (kind of) takes on the issue of terrorism but also takes over an hour to watch.
3. Murakami at the Serpentine
4. (Probably) Art & Language at the Lisson, which I haven't seen yet. 5. Also haven't yet seen Michael Landy at Interim Art, but I bet that's good. If you find yourself in the Bethnal Green area then Matthew Higgs at Anthony Wilkinson's a nice cheap giggle, and they're liable to have a tremendous video on downstairs, too. The one I saw last time concerned dog baseball.

Shopping's rubbish anyway.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Field is also one of my favorite things ever too, but the murakami I did not like despite being incredibly well done. It just seems like being inside a nintendo game. There was nothing specifically wrong with it. I just didn't like it.

I would recommend Rachel Whiteread at the gallery in haunch of venison yard.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly the Whiteread closes on the 15th (actually it was closed last Saturday when Koogy & I tried to go but I am increasingly sure that it was the HoV's extended New Year break).

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, that was William Wegman's 'Dog Baseball'.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes it was.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot about Muji and I don't think I knew that Uniqlo was in London -- Japanese prep, perfect! Thanks everyone for all of your wonderful suggestions! Tim: if you can't make Sam Smiths or whatever maybe you can join us for some art happenings.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I am so wishing we had gone to The Pineal Eye! I have just seen Noki.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

dispensary is awful awful awful
what happened to fletcher???
harvey nicks takes selfridges any day, at least for men anywayz

zemko (bob), Sunday, 16 February 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
suzy, I did not understand when you took us to see the faux surplus styles in Jungle but now I see! I see! You were so right. Thank you. Lynn Yeager calls this look "hardware" but Mary and I have a much more tasteless name for it.

Attention: I am FINALLY rocking the :pm FC Barcelona/CBF/REDs/etc. patchwork football scarf jumper vest or whatever it is called today.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 18 May 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

finally!

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

January??? Holy shit, you plan ahead.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 19 May 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oh.. wait.. never mind.. im a moron.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 19 May 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I finally found Religion! At a sample sale at their showroom in NY. Patch =~trend bigtime. There was a beige T-shirt with Boy Scout-like patches all over it, garethesque.

In a surprise move they also had Evisu jeans. I larfed and larfed. I was tempted to get some as a joke but they are hideous.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a fetching FC Barcelona zip-up top thing. I like it, but I'm worried it's a bit "britpop".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jungle is lame becuase you can by the same stuff, at genuine surplus places for about a fifth the price.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I may try working the boiler suit look though. My brother says it's a girly look, I say frrrrp to that.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ed er.....my plimsoles cost 7 quid from jungle? fifth of the price of that?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Their boiler suits cost £60, £12.50 at army surplus.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed, thank you for picking out my FC Barcelona patchwork jumper tank top! Maybe I will wear it for extra credibility at the apres-soccer drinks.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I now have a shirt to wear with my KK skirt. I just need shoes and the can't wait for summer look is a go.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The look here is, if we assume my editor who spends all spare pennies on clothes and shoes to be correct: those designer combats with ruching, floaty overpriced-for-a-bit-of-chiffon tiny tops which allow us to view the tattoo on her back, and seriously expensive strappy highest-heeled stiletto sandals. But I have this weird op-art 60s jacket which is sun-aged and inherited from cousin's grandmother which has been complimented at Vogue, which I wore with Toughskins painter's trousers bought in Williamsburg Salvation Army store for $3. And black patent fuck-off wedge boots.

Glad to know my fashion forecasting works six months down the line. NB Ed, Jungle's prices would seem reasonable to visiting Americans because Army surplus places aren't as cheap as they are in Sheffield.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

with ruching, floaty overpriced-for-a-bit-of-chiffon tiny tops

felicity already has this!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha oh yes but I wear with a "Hardwear" minikilt for I am short. Oh wait a minute did you mean the Japanese-inspired one? hmm

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the woodberry commons find(s)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

chiffon . . . sigh. I am dying for summer to arrive.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I just realized my KK coordinate black top with puff sleeves is chiffon!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Krazy Kat top too!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricky's has "Goodbye Kitty" pajama pants with kittens with Xes for eyes.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

KK hardware

http://www.strivemag.com/kahimi.gif

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
refresh, as I am wearing the KK skirt today

have any new stores opened in the interim?

which department store was it that has the school uniform shop?

what neighborhood has the highest concentration of top shop/muji/uniqlo chains?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Where Madchen had her FAP the other day was good - just behind Tottenham Court Road station

hey no fair, Madchen got to have the Tottenham Swan fap

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

tottenham court road isnt tottenham though!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.norfolkwindmills.com/images/geog.gif

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Tottenham Court Road is where the left hand part of the black line and the red line cross. Tottenham (where the swan is) is on the upper reaches of the light blue line.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Where can I get a Vivienne Westwood inisgnia [label/labor whore] cardigan? At the VW boutique presumably? In NY, there is none of that blue label stuff. Or, any luck with second-hand/ consignment? I'd like a nice red one.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The shop is on Conduit Street, Mary (unfortunately I will not be in London when you visit next, boo). Alternatively look on ebay, you'd be surprised what's available.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry to miss you, Suzy, but undoubtably your sage advice will keep me in good stead.

I wonder if Anna will once again be too hung over to take me shopping?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 August 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

woah. when did they make the tube maps all non-modernist?

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Thursday, 21 August 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

thats an unofficial one, as in it shows the actual layout, geographically

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 21 August 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if Anna will once again be too hung over to take me shopping?

-- Mary

No, promise. I'll go on a week long detox before, promise.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 21 August 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

When are you here, Mary, and will you be hang-out-with-able? And how have I missed this?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)
