anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 9 February 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I say b/c he's too punk rock for mainstream. He's the HOTHEAD PAISIAN! hehe. . .

I did a reading comprehension exercise w/my kiddos using a passage from autobiography of malcom X. Best. Autobiography. Evah.

We read a lot about Malcolm X when I was in school, alot more than we did about Stokely Carmichael (which is okay) or Thurgood Marshall (which ain't).

nowadays though, this is probably also because he was muslim. :(

Known in my grammar school as "Break Out the George Washington Carver Poster Month."

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 9 February 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, he was Black Muslim, which isn't quite Muslim in the sense it's used in the news. I don't know if Bush &co. are necessarily making such distinctions though.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 9 February 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I realize that Amateruist, but, hello, have you been living in America since 9/11? "There's no good Muslim 'cept for a. . ."

After he was expelled from the Nation of Islam he made his pilgrimage to Mecca and became a much more traditional Muslim.

The Nation was out protesting the Player's Ball in Atlanta this weekend; I was tempted to go but didn't feel like driving down.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 9 February 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

to protest or to be a playa?

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 9 February 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

to be a playa (probably why I didn't go, that and the reality of pimps is never as entertaining as the imagining)

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 9 February 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the amount of play George Washington Carver and Eli Whitney get in American history books is kinda weird.

thirteen years pass...

Does anyone here celebrate black history month? The last couple years I've been making an effort to read more about black history and even moreso (because all my internetting has damaged my ability to concentrate on books) to watch documentaries and black films in February. The standout last year was finally seeing Daughters of the Dust, which knocked my socks off. The Making Of book is fantastic as well. How do y'all celebrate the month? Any recommendations?

C.L.R.James, 21.2.86, 165 Railton Road (= the RACE TODAY office). Glad (and a bit amazed) I met and interviewed him. God knows how callow I sound on this, I’ve never dared listen back (lol I asked him abt Trotsky and he replied "He means nothing to me now").

Little piece – re a revival of his play THE BLACK JACOBINS – ran in the NME. Because times were different then…

(sorry FB, not really a response to you -- just something i unearthed today and wanted to put somewhere suitable)

Ha, wow! Yeah, no apologies necessary. Good reminder to bump Black Jacobins (the history book, not play) to the top of my reading list.

Black Girl by Ousmane Sembène if you haven't seen it.
