Should ILX admins/users be able to make threads ungoogleable?

Google and most major search engines let you set a flag in the meta headers for a page to make it non indexable (as opposed to the normal cumbersome robots.txt method).

Why don't we give posters the option of making un Googleable threads if they fear the Googling idiots will invade a thread rather than wr*t*ng l*ke th*s?

Admins could set the flag on already posted threads?

I think they have this, isn't it called "The 12-Foot Lizards"?

n.b. I am not in the 12-Foot Lizards.

Googling idiots don't travel in flocks, do they? Besides, one of them could be Jesus.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Saturday, 15 February 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think posters should be able to make threads ungoogleable. Yes, admin people or Graham can, and we can ask. I don't think we've had so much trouble with googlers, myself. Take out BL recently, and I can hardly think of anything apart from the odd idiotic post here and there, which is no big deal. As a counterbalance, can we hear from any regulars who first came here that way?

I think it's over-cautious to enable us to do it. It's easy enough to st*r your posts, or change names. The wonderful and interesting posters that HAVE found us through random googling, and stayed and become fixtures, far outweight any problems we've had with trolling.

kate, Saturday, 15 February 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yes agreed. the best people have arrived through random googling i think. they are what gives it its broadness and vitality

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 15 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless you are talking about B*ngb*s.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 15 February 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And then you go to ILM, and consider the M*ssy L*rics pages... ...and cry for humanity.

jm (jtm), Saturday, 15 February 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that the best got here via Google - i.e. I didn't, and the starting group for the boards contained many of our stars - but I'm sure many wonderful posters did.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 February 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Toraneko and her hair!

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 15 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

also, not st*ring stuff out makes it searchable from within ilx itself

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 15 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin doesn't consider me one of the best! I sob, I weep.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 15 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well there we are, now I am learning what wonderful posters did come that way.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

if you don't want the general public in here...no, that's not polite of me to say.
restraint, restraint, serenity.

B3cky Luca5 and my 'roundisn men vs. skinny ones' thread!

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 15 February 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Is ILX currently very googleable anyway? As far as I can see, the only pages here which turn up on google are the new questions page and the categorised lists of thread titles. That's why those threads designed to be googled (such as this one) don't work.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I arrived at ILM via Google after typing in 'Bangles Go-Gos'

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

All right, hands up, everyone who drew a map of The Beach and left it behind them on their way to ILE.

*sheepishly raises hand*

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, ilxor doesn't have the webbokudos that being on greenspun afforded.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"webbokudos"?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's my word and you can all go to hell.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I was in hell.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
those flags are set now.... on every thread!

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

twelve years pass...

Can anyone explain why these threads have so many views?

the one at the top has been like that since the thread began even when there's not been any posts on it but for some reason the britpop thread has joined it.

Has it been linked from elsewhere?

Treeship, Saturday, 10 September 2016 01:16 (nine years ago)

I like the idea that someone was sad enough to set their browser to reload every 30 seconds just so it remains top of most read threads but im pretty sure stet will have an explanation.

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 10 September 2016 01:18 (nine years ago)
