I am going to be attending medical school very shortly at ETSU. Does anyone know of any highlights or hotspots near ETSU?

What city is it in? I have a vague feeling that my late Great Uncle Ivan "Rip" Van Winkle attended school there in the 1920s or 1930s and was on the football team...

I think he meant Ned? Is Ned going on a... (pause, high five) ROADTRIP?

anyhow congratulations s samson. what i know: Johnson City is one corner of the "tri-cities area" that you'll be hearing a lot about. The other two towns are Bristol and Jonesboro. Lotta great antique shops. Absolutely gorgeous country. The family of a very cute girl who broke my heart lives there. It's 2 hours' drive from Knoxville.

Jonesboro has an INCREDIBLE storytelling festival every year, it's probably like the Olympics of storytelling. There are stand-up comedians, old-time mountain stories, stories from India and Chicago. Totally off the chain.

I run three hours every morning. Am looking forward to my morning jogs when I get up to the school.

Well, they hang elephants ten miles away in Erwin (see this thread: Hanging elephants: classic or dud?).

Highlights or hotspots? Good question. Musicwise, there is one good venue for folk/bluegrass/country-type stuff, the Down Home. Saw Webb Wilder there a few weeks ago. For non-regional rock and pop stuff, you'd be best off going to Asheville (60 miles) or Knoxville (100 miles). Master Dik maintains a list of indie-type shows around the Tri-Cities.

You'll probably learn soon enough about the bar scene (Gatsby's, the Hide-Away, Halo, the soon-to-be-reopened Otter). The best restaurants are probably Galloway's, Cafe Pacific, and (in nearby Jonesborough) the Parson's Table (but I haven't been there in years, so who knows). For 24-hour dining, the place to go after last call is Perkins.

It's a great area for outdoorsy things (fishing, hiking, rafting, etc.), and the Autumns are unbelievably gorgeous. But culture-wise...*cough* *shuffles feet*. Congrats on getting into Quillen, and best of luck - my friends who have gone there have good things to say about it.

Thanks for providing all of the links Ernest! I'm having a beer at the moment before our friends arrive. I will look at these later!
