RFI: Good places in NYC for getting work done

Yo, can any of y'all recommend some good cafes in Manhattan where they wouldn't bother someone who's trying to write? For several hours? I've been working on my thesis in my apartment but I need a change of scenery. And the library suXoRs also -- it drives me insane, too quiet.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

In your hood? Tom's Diner? Dunno.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hosuing Works maybe? There are always people writing and reading there.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Barnes & Noble on Union Square

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom's Diner, you crazy?

What about the library?

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a nice day. Go to Central Park.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Tom's would want to kick me out in an hour or so. They're pretty crowded around now. Also then I'd have to see other Columbia grad students (runs and hides)

I don't care if it's in my hood -- it's a nice day.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom's Diner, you crazy?

Yes.

The only things I can remember about Columbia's area are Tom's Diner and Nacho Mama's.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah you should go to Central Park. But stay on the East Side - St. Patrick's Day parade is on 5th Avenue.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Also then I'd have to see other Columbia grad students (runs and hides)

OK, so I won't mention the Hungarian Pastry Shop.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

There's the Deluxe, that exhausts my knowledge of your hood and that's probably no good either, but really good grilled cheese.

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The lighting is awful, but I used to study at the Hungarian Pastry Shop on Amsterdam up by 111th or so.

Actually, it would be more accurate to say that I used to fall asleep in front of the television with a highlighter in my hand but I don't think that's what want.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Riverside Park, that'd be nice. Study at Grant's Tomb!

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Grant's Tomb all nice now? When I was living around here (1993) it was overgrown with weeds and litter and kind of scary.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

living around here = living around there

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

How about going north and up to the Cloisters? They must have a library or cafe up there, with a name like that.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

my lab! Its in London but you should move and i'll sit you down in a corner somehwere.

there's a mass spectrmotemeter here that makes a lovely drone.

and loads of colourful pieces of cable all wired up that connect the electronics that runs the sensors.

good luck w/yr thesis BTW

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryant Park has free wireless Internet access now!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

hey i used to rock the mass spec back in the day! the big Death Star-level MALDI-MS even! in Gor these are our videogames

geeta (geeta), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever you do, don't come to my workplace. No work gets done here.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

While I love the wireless Internet in Bryant Park (a short walk away from my apt), I'd find it too tempting when trying to work on something like a thesis.

I was in Empire Coffee at 41st & 9th earlier, getting some actual work done on my computer (no Internet). They have a comfy couch and some chairs and don't mind people hanging out nursing a coffee for ages.

Jen (nstop), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just out on 6th Ave. Avoid 5th or 6th at all costs, unless you like being accosted by drunken assholes.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, did anyone else see the phrase "getting work done" and think this was a plastic surgery thread?

Halcyon comes highly recommended. Give me a shout out if you feel like heading to Brooklyn any time this week and would like company.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

bryant park also has beer i think too

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you get work done in Halcyon with all the distractions? Good music, Boylan's sodas, and cute boys shopping for breakbeats?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I read that as 'cute boys shopping for breakfast,' and oh the ways to take that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

a couple of ppl i know used to go to the upper west side xando, but there is the internet access you might want to avoid

Ehh now I really want to try Halcyon...Geeta, call me...

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, a really good place to do so in the daytime that's really easy to overlook is the Staten Island Ferry. I'm totally serious. just get on and ride it back and forth for a few hours. no one will notice or care, and if the day is nice it's totally relaxing too.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

unless you get seasick very easily. or motion sickness when reading in a moving vehicle.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Go to the Barnes & Noble near my house. People just like LIE ON THE FLOOR in that joint. Not like in a discreet corner but in the middle of the goddamned floor. And no one ever bothers them so I can't imagine anyone would bother you, plus all the books to help you work.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa, MALDI - Matrix-Assisted Laser (what's the "D"?) Ionization. Sounds tricky. I've been kicked out of Barnes and Noble twice for sleeping on their couches.
