What's happened to the contribute an answer thing?

It used to be a nice little box on the same page as all the previous posts where you were able to handily cut & paste stuff and check back other people's comments if you forgot what they had said. Now it's back to the old Greenspun system. How come?

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham has taken it away to prove a point. Apologies to all ILX users.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The terrorists have won!

(outta curiousity, what's up?)

hstencil, Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, I blame hstencil!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucked if I know hstencil.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I am glad that it is only gone for a little while - this is a pain in the arse.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

to prove what point Tom?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's cruel and spiteful.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Should we Ormskerians start backing up AAD again? I see another move coming on . . .

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

While I'm at it, what is this 'Blog' witchcraft?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I wondered that myself, Lara.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Answer, sort of, here: A question about ILX user capacity

Not sure if that will become blue automatically!

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The background is on the user capacity thread, Mark.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the point, i believe, is that graham feels he is under-appreciated on the board, and does a lot of behind the scenes work which no one thanks him for. so removing some of the features is an attempt to make ilxors see the error of their ways, apologize to graham, thank him and send him presents, and generally appreciate him more. or, if you look at it another way, it is an attempt at bullying you into being nicer to him. depends on you which one you think is the case.

(note to graham, trying things like this in real life will lose you people very quick. they tend to refer to it as emotional blackmail and steer clear pretty much after that. the way people will respond to doing it on ilxor should give you a hint to how other people will react to the same pattern of behaviour in real life)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul - a move is not an issue since it's Andrew's server, but backups are generally sensible, yes.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like the twilight zone film!!

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i am presuming ilx was backed up a while ago?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to sound cold or harsh or anything, but there's no way you're not going to go unappreciated maintaining a board like this. get over it.

at the same time, I think one of the reasons you're underappreciated is because you are doing such a fantastic job. keep it up.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a proper backup system in place, in case Graham is feeling particularly angry or depressed one day and decides to delete the entire thing?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone on ICQ or MSN Messenger to talk about this? I can't seem to get AIM working . .

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Woo, war on out very on desktops!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No there isn't as far as I know Matt - obviously Andrew has all the code and stuff on his machine but whether it's backed up I don't know.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

If he wants cards sending can I recommend the fantastic Chris De Burgh e-card

http://www.cdeb.com/cdeb/post-0501.html

What could possibly say "I love you" more than a picture of the scariest monobrow there has ever been.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I right in reading "13 new answers, 14 total, 13 unread", to mean there's already been a deletion on this thread?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

are you. fucking. kidding me.

can someone please explain how buffy box sets equate to genuine gratitude?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew - no, that's just a bug that happens on most threads.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! It seems you can embed C de B midi files in them too! Crusader!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

If you are not good, I will delete the internet!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

On the New Answers Board the link to ILM has disappeared. Any possibility of it making a comeback?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently the right amount of feigned reverence.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(should do the trick.)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Rule one in the FBI handbook in a hostage situation is cut the power.

(Actually rule one is have a snooty argument with Bruce Willis, but I don't think that's applicable).

ANyway aren't Borders doing a Buy One Get One Free on BBS. Just buy one, get the free one and then take back the one you bought. Zing!

How the Real World is Like Buffy By Mark S Chapter 1238498237459087

"What's the Magic Word?": Summoning, Making and Enabling Spells, in Fiction and in Life

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, if this was Buffy, SMG would be kicking Graham in the nuts now.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Willow'd be flaying him

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If this were Buffy we would be saying "But Dawnie, we DO notice you!"

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe it's a double episode

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Or he'd be hitching to Mexico w/Jonathan

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I would happily lend G my Buffy Box sets if it's a desperate situation- but Starry has my Angel season 1 sets right now!

marianna, Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the magic word has btw been used once on this page but incorrectly

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"nuts"?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Please, G

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I definitely think Graham is deserving of a lot of gratitude and thanks for all that he has done for ilxor, because I know that a lot of work and care has gone into this. That said, I don't think blackmailing everyone into buying buffy box sets (which I don't even own because they are very spendy) is any way to obtain real gratitude and thanks.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

at the same time, I think one of the reasons you're underappreciated is because you are doing such a fantastic job. keep it up.

yes, no one appreciates functioning computer systems. this is life.

top marks to Graham for maintaining ILX!

nul points to Graham for feeling obliged to make points!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Underappreciated"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And please could we also have the really incredibly useful link direct from ILM new answers to ILE new answers back? Please? This place is almost perfect in terms of use-ability, and that's all thanks to Graham. I certainly feel as if I owe him booze.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham just doesn't want gratitude of course (I mean he has had plenty of that).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

He wants the moon on a stick!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole OTM, through and through.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, stop this. Spite does not bring gratitude. Try actually engaging people in conversations about what concerns you for once instead of acting on your most childish impulses. It only breeds hostility. How can people feel gratitude for you when they always have to watch their step around you? You have proven to us over and over again that you could take this all away whenever you want. That sort of petulant behavior is very unlikely to bring anyone to your side. Instead of being glad and thankful that ILx is in your hands, people regret that you were put in a position of power over something they care about.

There are better and more constructive ways to deal with this, and you know that. You're smarter than this. I know you are.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to reply to Melissa but I would probably be deleted if I did.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Any gratitude I had is no more.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think it's possible, Graham, that people appreciate you in a number of ways that you refuse to acknowledge? For instance, if anyone but you had sent the email you sent me a few weeks back, I would certainly not have replied as a friend. Saying horrible unprovoked things to people and having them send you best wishes ... this is a form of appreciation no one else on this board receives. And I know there are others who have made even greater efforts than that, but it sounds to me as if their reaching out didn't impress you very much, either.

Look, it's easy to say everyone "deserves" to be appreciated and loved. But in the real world it just doesn't work this way: you have to accommodate people's liking you. Being demanding and difficult toward precisely the people who like you most is a very good way of signalling to others that they should keep clear of you. I fear that sometimes that's exactly what you do. We should appreciate you more? How have you repaid the people who have tried? Wasn't some appreciation owed to them? And what did they get?

I have an unused copy of Buffy Season One, but it's North American DVD coding, so it wouldn't be much use to you either.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What nabisco said (except for the bit about the Buffy DVD).

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This might be a bad point to say this, but I actually hadn't noticed any new features appearing or disappearing. I must not use all the ilx 'functions' available, but it hasn't affected my use of the boards. The button to Contribute at the bottom of the thread doesn't bother me too much either. :)

marianna, Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Marianna gosh I must arrange getting those back to you! I've had them for ages!

*And* I must get some Angel dvds myself...

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

haha pbuh

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i refuse to contribute to this thread until one of you buys me a muffin.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

well, obviously this has lost you some more respect graham, but at least you will see how people respond to this kind of tactic in life. this is good! because you will be unlikely to make same mistake again. this is a foolproof way to make people wary of you and to push people further away still. remember the advice threads? this kind of tactic was not on there, because it doesnt work. ever.

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And look, I know perfectly well that saying things like that instead of giving you the support you want endangers ILX. Fine. What I want is for you to realize these things and make friends and be happy. If you need to destroy ILX before that happens, so be it. You'll take that last post as criticism, but it is support. It's advice, and it's advice I give because I think you'll be a happier person if you take it.

So as with that email, I really honestly do hope you feel better tomorrow. I hope there comes a point soon when you're genuinely happy and don't feel like lashing out at other people for supposedly causing your past unhappiness. I really do wish you the best.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Graham, look to the "Give It Up For Graham" thread. I am going to go there in a few minutes and write one of the much-mocked 12-paragraph posts about the things I do like about you.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude is Graham saying things on this thread that I can't see? Seriously?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabiso is the voice of reason. I just checked that thread out too and people have submitted to it very recently (before this tomfoolery)

i refuse to contribute to this thread until one of you buys me a muffin.

I'll only buy you a muffin if you become a slave to gratitude.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Starry - I can't see sanything wither so even if he is *sings* you are not alone, I am here with you etc.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabisco proves that he is a much nicer person than I am.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

he has said all the things on other threads. i'll post links if i get that muffin.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

if he's smart enough to program this board, he can certainly come up with a region-free dvd player! send him the cursed thing ;-)

ron (ron), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

he has said all the things on other threads.

Wha?

i'll post links if i get that muffin.

You're so gonna go hungry waiting for that muffin!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, Graham is not saying anything on this thread, though I hope he's reading it. Everything I, for one, am saying concerns the whole history of Graham and his interactions with people from this board. Basically I think Graham's methods for getting people to like and appreciate him are completely backwards and counterproductive: this whole thing is a perfect example of it, and it does to ILX as a whole things it seems he's done to individual people in the past (I'm sure you've noticed this). And -- MOST IMPORTANT -- I mention all of this not to criticize him or to beat him down, but because I want him to understand it! It's very simple! This sort of thing does not earn gratitude and appreciation, it diminishes it! C'mon, Graham, you know that!

We like you, Graham. We like you much more than you seem to think. And it's just terrible that your fearing we don't like you enough is only going to make that the case. And sorry for doing this here and not via email, but your last one actually caused some shit for me at work, so I don't want to go back there.

We are all rooting for you, Graham. The fact that I should have to fear for my ILX posting privileges just for saying that is a good indication of why your present approach to this isn't a workable one. I will try to stop here.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"he has said all the things on other threads.
Wha?"

i.e. he has outlined his reasons for removing ILX features on other threads. people are using this thread (and one or two others) to respond. do i get my muffin now?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but the flippancy with with is was done was a bit rubbish.

I AM NOT BUYING YOU A MUFFIN YOU TYRANT!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If somebody's already said this then ignore it

dave q, Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote that we all chip in together and send Graham nice things to show him that we really do care and then Andrew takes away his server privs and we turn the board over to a team of programmers because much as we appreciate Graham's work this isn't the first time he's shown he's too capricious to be trusted with ilx.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for putting the features back Graham.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we should all do this test: http://lax.gaz.nu/wonka/ ??

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, thanks Graham!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If Mark S's version of events as posted on the "Shout for the Moderator" thread is correct then I think a few people have landed themselves royally in the shit. If he did just have to go to college in the middle of recoding something, hence the missing features, I suggest people don't just buy him a boxed set, they buy the Buffy franchise and install him as a new character who gets all the good lines (i.e. the new Anya).

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

While posting to this thread, I was taking it at face value that Graham was intentionally disabling features out of spite. I took this to be true because, frankly, it didn't seem out of character.

But if there's evidence to indicate that this isn't the case, I apologize profusely. I still think the advice is good advice, but if this has all been an innocent coding mix-up then it's not particularly relevant and didn't need to be aired here. In which case: sorry, Graham. You've done a lot of good work on this board and you've been great to talk to, and I apologize for leaping to the worst conclusion.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

There is evidence to the contrary, Nabisco. Namely in the form a threat on another thread to do just that.

That said, thank you to Graham for restoring things.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, he's admitted it. One thing I will say for Graham is that he is usually very big about owning up to things like this, apologizing for them, and hopefully moving on. In the end it's not been a big deal.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)
