Will this be the event that brings me kicking and screaming into the DVD nation?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Did I ever tell you my JVDB stories, Mary?

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

spill! spill!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Did you snog?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, but he did snog my friend Jeff.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Scandalicious!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

I knew a girl in college who went to junior high with JVDB. Apparently, he was a huge dork, and was known as "James Van Der Geek." Gotta love that twelve-year-old wit.

On a related note, I loved the first season of Dawson's Creek. Part of my senior thesis in college was about how the show was instrumental in renewing my friendship with my first high school girlfriend.

jaymc., Friday, 4 April 2003 02:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

So should I buy a DVD player, after mocking its existence for all of these years?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, you need a DVD player. I didn't get one until recently, but now I think they're the best.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

They have been playing 4 episodes a day on the US station TBS in anticipation of the series finale. It's crazy and too much overload.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd wait until recordable DVD players get cheaper, probably by Christmas time.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, I just ordered it from Amazon, so I better get a DVD player.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, that's a good thing to do, now getting a DVD player is no longer an issue! I got CD's before I got a CD player.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary, you should get a new computer with a CD burner and DVD player.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Agh...I don't want to watch Dawsons on my computer!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary, make Sure you get a DVD player that can also play PAL DVDs. Ask Ned for details before diving in!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Quite right. :-) My Malata all-region little wondertoy is a thing of the gods.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 April 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

May I ask what are PAL DVDs? DVDs that will be your friend? Sorry to disappoint, but I'm gonna get the cheapest things available, my one requirement is that it plays Dawsons:)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

PAL is the European TV standard, dear Mary. So think of it this way, for instance:

MARY: "I want to see the Pulp DVD collection."

EVIL DVD OVERLORD: "Ha ha, it's only available on PAL and you have an NTSC player! TOO BAD FOR YOU!"

MARY: *cries*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Er, do they exist for under $100? If not I'll leave these exotic Pal devises for those much more culturally adept than myself.

"I don' wanna wait/For my life to be over..."

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm right now rethinking the whole buying the DVD thing. I don' wanna clutter up my room with extra appliances. Maybe I'll just keep the dvd as a fetish object.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

You should eat it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 April 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I gotta get one of those multi-region players. This will be a great day.

And no one should watch movies on their computers. It's bad for you.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 4 April 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary, how can you be an Anglophile and not know from PAL?

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary is a FIBBER. She knows nothing of video conversion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Proven by science that I am not Anglophile, hurray.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was gonna post the Dawson's Creek fanfic about Joey & Andie killing off Dawson & Pacey (who had turned to satanic rituals) and then eloping with the help of Jar Jar Binks that I wrote when I was fifteen, but decided against it.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

who is nick cave?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

he's my second cousin

(note: true)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

The family reunions must be rollicking fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 00:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why does James Van Der Beek look so smug on that dvd cover?

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

coz he's Dawson and all Dawson does is either Smug or Miserable, there is no inbetween. He's binary opposites made flesh.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is this out in the UK?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

I should think so.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

It just came out stateside, so I dunno, maybe you should get a reverse-PAL.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

just checked amazon.co.uk, it's true, we are Dawson's deprived! :(

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Smug and miserable are opposites? How very James Spader.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

well yeah, in a kind of self-satisfied (smug) vs dis-satisfied (miserable) way.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Plus Amazon has the best deal: $40 reduced down to $25. And if you don't mind waiting there's free shipping. Hence my insta-purchase.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

It has arrived! The packaging is very, very nice. 3CDS of fun fun fun.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was gonna post the Dawson's Creek fanfic about Joey & Andie killing off Dawson & Pacey

I'd read that, but only if it ends with Joey & Andie lezzing it up.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

And no one should watch movies on their computers. It's bad for you.

I disagree with this. If you have a decent monitor and speakers you can actually see and hear movies at a higher resolution than on your average TV. I do it all the time as I actually prefer it to my housemate's 51" Sony projection HD-ready monstrosity.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I might be headed right now to buy a DVD.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I got a DVD player on Saturday: I have seen the light.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

That happened once after I bought a lamp.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Went DVD shopping during lunch today. Though tempted be a Pasolini trilogy, I feel my next purchase will be My So-Called Life.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ok why is the MSCL $70 (reduced from $90) on Amazon? I bought season 1 of Buffy.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can I borrow your Buffy DVDs when you're done?

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of course. You can even come over and watch them with me.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ok. Shall I bring my Watcher's Guide?

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ohhhh yes.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

So, finished up with DC season 1 and what a roller coaster ride it was. Picked up MSCL vol. 1 and the packaging is very disappointing considering what I am used to.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary, do you have plans this weekend?

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm free yet alas Amazon hasn't delivered Buffy yet.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

:(

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe next wknd . . . the Amazon ponks are slow . . .

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 April 2003 05:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

So NYers, as of today I own the complete My So-Called Life Box Set. If anyone wants to catch up with Angela Chase you know where to find her.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't get MSCL.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am totally on the MSCL vibe, jibbidy jibbidy

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

MSCL really grew on me, but it's like twice the price of the Buffy sets. Then again, unlike Buffy, MSCL isn't on twelve times a week in syndication. Maybe I will start dropping birthday hints to the appropriate people.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I saw today a three part Charlie Brown DVD collection: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas specials. It looked like the cutest thing ever.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

get the Guaraldi CB christmas album this winter and u will be all set!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

i cant wait for my dvd player i am getting law and ardor season 1

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

law & ardor ha ha

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes i am excited to see the old ones with DA Stone. righteou anger on behlaf of Justice with the capitol J! also, if anyone has a sealed copy of the Criterion edition of hard Boiled I would be willing to take it off yr hands ;-)

and i still dont know what jibbidy jibbidy means. but i really have to see mscl again someday if only so i can decide whether i shld:
a) cry because i identified with the blond fro guy when i was young or
b) mock myself for identifying with the blond fro guy when i was young.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

When will they have more L&O seasons available?

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

when god answers my prayers, but i am agnostic, so it may take some time ;-)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Brian Crackow roxx.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 03:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes thanx for the name yeah... i had forgotten the name to make room for social theory texts and german dub house label dicographies... how have my priorities become so mixed up :-(

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 April 2003 04:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

And Buffy has arrived! It's so tiny compared to the seasons 2 and 3 boxsets I saw at the store...Buffy marathon this weekend. FR do you wanna get in on the ground floor?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

whoa whoa whoa--Buffy season 4 is out?

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey, Mary, sign me up! I have a present for you! I'll bring my Buffy books, too.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of course RM you are in. The packaging is so nice. MSCL packaging sucks. S.--this is season 1 we're talking about here--taking it back to the beginning.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 00:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

So we settle in to watch Buffy season 1 disc 1 and it won't play! But disc 2 plays. Anyway, we got to see all this good Buffy-Angel, Giles-Ms. Callander, Xander-hyena stuff on disc 2, but how can I make disc 1 play?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Where is that fucker Andy? Why can't he come fix it for us??

rosemary@mary's (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 03:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

gabbneb finally solves the Great Buffython Mystery. he awaits season 4 to begin purchasing. he stops talking in the third person.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 27 April 2003 04:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

two weeks pass...
I saw Brian Krackow at Metropolitan clothing store yesterday. I rounded a corner and was like wait! I know you . . . he looks just the same the hair may be even more pronounced but he has really started dressing better. He was wearing a pink oxford with white stripes jeans and carrying a coolio bag and I imagine nice shoes I tried not to stare.

In other notes, we have solved the mystery of the vagrant Buffy disc 1.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 05:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

three months pass...
Hi all
I'm a big Aussie fan of DC - was wondering if anyone else in Oz knows where i can buy the season 1 DVD in stores...
