my momus story

when i first posted on this thread, and the talk was of momus, i recoginsed the name, but was unsure about the person. I now realise where I remembered it from. Ages ago, i seem to remember reading a story in a newspaper about the 'pop artsit' Momus, who was in trouble with someone for stealing a sample or somthing, had been stung, and had to raise 10000. or maybe 100000. maybe 1000 pounds. i forget. anyway. he devised a schem,e whereby anyone could send in a picture, descirption of themselves or something, and he would write a bespoke popo song about them!
is this true, or am i totlayy hallucinating? i have a strange feeling im getting him confused with Ron Sexsmith, but i dont know why.
if it is true. what re the results? what was the outcome?

Hey - didn't Mike Peters do this for anyone who bought the Alarm boxed set? 'Crazy' Glenn McDonald to thread!

My Momus story: girlfriend drags me to see him and Kahimi Kairie at the Double Door, and I pay $10 or something. They lip-synch.

Later, I discover a message board he posts to, and make fun of him occasionally.

The end.

hstencil, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

even Kahimi?

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 10 April 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, lip-synching isn't the right term, I mean they karaoked. Silly me.

hstencil, Thursday, 10 April 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What we in fact did was mix preprogrammed electronics with live vocals and some synth top lines. This is what a great many live acts who use electronics do. Do you really feel your $10 would have been better spent if we'd hired 23 goons to handplay the 23 tracks of MIDI data being streamed by the DAT machine?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 10 April 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(Actually 23 hired goons might have been cool if we'd dressed them up as pirates. But then your ticket would have cost $75.)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 10 April 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

momus.
i love you.
will you have my children.

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 10 April 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i would pay $75 for pirates.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 10 April 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, give anthony's children back.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 10 April 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The children of Momus and Anthony would rule the world. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

If we dressed them as pirates.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 10 April 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

really, pirates was so last year.
my children will be dressed like Whitechapel Libertines or Restoration Whores.

A Friend Of A Friend does this, but gets someone (usually the friend of mine who knows them) to stand behind a laptop with a pair of headphones on, and look as if they're playing at least some of the preprogrammed stuff on a software synth or whatever. She (ie, my friend) finds it incredibly funny when people come up to her after the gig saying stuff like: "yeah, you were great! you were the one holding everything together!"

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 10 April 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

23 tracks of MIDI data were required to make what sounded like a cheap Casio?

hstencil, Thursday, 10 April 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I want Momus to write me a bespoke poopoo song.

Rather Childish (Madchen), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinda glad you beat me to that one Madchen...

smee (smee), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like a pirate shanty.
