I fear for my sanity, I bought the new Him album. It's good.

Tim Hopkins to thread!

Goth in spirit but not in look.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I am an Ex-Goth (recovering Goth?) and proud of it. Want to see my Bauhaus t-shirt collection?

You tell me.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a fully recovered psuedo-goth, thanks.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

but seriously, get the Him album! The best band to ever come out of Finland!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a fairly thorough knowledge of the Cleopatra and Projekt catalogs (at least circa mid-90s) and used to be able to put on near-flawless lipstick and eyeliner on the not-exactly-smooth-riding school bus. Also I once saw Christian Death live and resisted the impulse to grab Valor's turban/headwrap thing and run away laughing. That right there is True Gothick Devotion, 'cause that turban is pure comedy.

Alas I am currently basking in spring sunlight and wearing a white t-shirt so I am no longer honouring that particular fire.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally is my FPOD!!!

(Note: FPOD = Favorite Poster of the Day)

Also:

Jody Beth Rosen, that is one of the coolest personal photos I've seen in ages. It could serve as the cover photo of this really cool "Patti Smith meets the VU" all female band, with you as lead singer.

On the original subject:

I was an inadvertent semi-goth in my early teenaged years, but only because black was my favorite color at the time and I tried wearing as many black things as I could. Oh, and I was this incredibly antisocial type -- very shy, very ill at ease with people, etc. And I wrote miserable poetry, too. Funny how things change. I don't think it's at all possible for someone who likes listening to ABC to earn any "goth points".

Lunchtime over. :)

"Did you like the Killing Joke show?" "Yeah, it was super goth."

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the implications of the phrase 'torment my puddin'' have not been fully spelled out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

you're a total dodgy pervert, Raggett.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, ALEX posted it. I merely noted it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, well, I don't see Alex pointing out the dodgy bits of the cartoon. I see only you doing it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, who did that Batman cartoon above? It so looks like Jay Stephens to me that I wanna shout YAY but that would probably be counter to the spirit of this thread.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it was his big screen debut, I believe, playing a nasty Aussie Skinhead.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't recall Tracer Hand being that imposing, but I won't argue the point.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not a goth, but i fear the amount of eyeliner and lipstick i wear makes me look like one.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I always wanted to sleep like one (aka, in a silk-lined coffin).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Real goths are too busy with their hair, make up and self mutilation to post.

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I sacked Rome once.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted to be a Reid brother when I was thirteen. I wore button down shirts buttoned all the way up, wayfarers, black jeans and boots. I always told people, "no, no, you don't understand. I like noisy pop and surf songs. I'm not a goth." Nobody in Sherman Oaks seemed to understand. boo hoo.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The funny thing is, people go on about goths being too busy putting on makeup or acting like vampires blah blah but every goth I know is a rabid net junkie, very intelligent, thinks the whole bat/vampire thing is a hilarious stupid joke, and isn't at all po-faced or mysterious. Yes, I am defending goths. Well some goths anyway - I don't count the Hot Topic Manson fan tshirt wearing young gits.

Oh, and:
http://www.memorygongs.com/13-trayceb.jpg

I'm the one on the left. I don't bother much with the goth look anymore, but the people are just lovely.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that skirt.

Seriously, though, I'm getting paranoid, do I grin like the Joker? This is the only picture I can find with me smiling properly, and I don't think I look like the Joker. Alex is making me paranoid. I'll never smile again and become a goth by default.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that skirt - its floor length, red satin and black velvet, its very lush. I have to say, goths do some gorgeous clothing. Sadly, I bought all my gear when I went through a skinny phase, and so now I have a pile of size-10 PVC corsets and miniskirts and so on that I don't fit into anymore :( Which is a shame, I have a nice arse in a PVC miniskirt if I do say so myself.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my goth clothes all had to go to my sisters, they stopped fitting me ages ago. That was the downside of having my weight yo-yo all over the place when I was 16.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Goths loved my first band, the Murdering Monsters. They would always get up and dance at our gigs, which impresses the hell outta me. Yep, I love goths.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

shit jody is that really you? you're a fox.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you think?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had more fun at goff nites recently than I've had in indie clubs for a long while (NB I haven't been to How Does It Feeeeeel yet - and when did you start DJ-ing there Mark?! ). I own no modern-day goth fashion but have enough black floaty things to make sure ridicule is mine many a nation over. I am down to wear bunny ears to the next goff nite.

And the goth version of office politics is SO ENTERTAINING!

Goths these days aren't pessimistic enough for my liking. But I will say this - they appeal to my sense of the ridiculous and they're generally interesting. 7/10.

Starry, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually - VNV Nation. Marks reduced to 6/10.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

but seriously, get the Him album! The best band to ever come out of Finland

Well, I most certainly disagree! HIM are so big here it's fuckin' disgusting! The funniest thing is that they refuse to call their music goth rock, so they've named it "love metal". What the fuck is that? Also, Ville Valo (the lead man) has begun to wear a woollen cap. Is that a goth thing to do?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Love metal!! Roxx0r!!

JBR I think you look like Tony Hadley in that picture. Is there something you should be telling us?

Gay or goth?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite great affinity for many a goth band (and a disarming amount of black in my wardrobe), I'm not a Goth. Nor, for that matter, do I enjoy the taste of a man, which renders me rather boringly heterosexual (plus the fact that I'm married.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What is that, the sequel to Scent of a Woman? What are you talking about. I don't enjoy tasting men either, they're filthy as evidenced on that corporate urinal thread. I'm totally going to only make out with women from now on.

I'm a sucker for goth chicks. I don't even usually say the word "chick", unless proceeded by the adjective "goth". Of course, I'm also a sucker for red-heads, tall girls, girls with cat-eye glasses, loud crazy girls, sweet shy girls, etc etc.

I would just like to announce that I made the mistake of mentioning this Harley Quinn thing to my mom. THANKS ALEX, APPARENTLY I'M GOING TO HAVE A NEW SISTER AND HER NAME IS HARLEY QUINN KEARNEY, LIKE IN 9 MONTHS I GUESS OR WHATEVER.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

By all laws of American adolescence in effect at the time, I should have been a goth. No idea why I wasn't.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 17 April 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't because I look shit in black clothing

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 17 April 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Wha? Your mom's pregnant? What does that have to do with Harley Quinn?

In any event, because of some rather inappropriate suggestions found right here on this thread (Raise Thy Fists And Exhort Loudly Because......), I am officially retiring Harley Quinn from my Ally-tormenting arsenal, lest someone else get the wrong idea.

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 21 September 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

There is nothing more hilarious than a "news article" about goths, esp. when they make Goths a proper noun.

I like helltons of the music but I like colors too much to wear the clothes and rubbing my eyes & eating greasy foods, preventing me from the makeup. Never been into a subculture that has a uniform. Tho some of them can be cute either in an "awww man that kid is so over the top" way OR a rrrrowr way...kids in this article are DEFINITELY the former.
