How late for work are you? (I write from home)
I predict my current schedule will have me running some 60 minutes late; an improvement on yesterday's 110. I like phrasing it in minutes, which makes things sound airline-sleek, though I confess the breezy manner I affect when wandering into the office nearer lunch than breakfast is beginning to wear a little thin, even if I do charge by the hour.

Gordon (Gordon), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i am regularly 15 minutes or more late (like, 3-4 times a week). I've been known to be up to an hour late at least once a fortnight.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I am never late for work. This is the thing that sucks about living across the road. You never have an excuse to be late for work. Actually, wait, I lie, I was 3 hours late for work yesterday, but that was because I was ill.

However, I do spend the first part of the day mucking about on ILX until my colleages get here, to make up for it. ;-)

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

15 minutes this morning which is quite a regular occurance!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

20 minutes, always.

nellie (minna), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Always between 5-15 minutes late. You could set your watch to be behind by me.

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm hopeless. Every day I suffer the same surprises: it's further than I thought! there's traffic on the road, impeding me! there aren't enough parking spaces! etc.

estela, Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm always 15 minutes late. Always.

NB this isn't because of trains etc, it's because I'm bone bastard idle.

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

never late. its impossible to be late when your up at 5 and here for 6:30.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm generally early, I like having half an hour or so to myself to sort the stock and orders out in peace before having to deal with anyone. It's quite soothing.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What's work?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to be very punctual (in fact I'd usually be early), but I'm always 15-30 minutes late. No one notices, no one cares.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm always early too. But, as is totally obvious, I fk around on ILX enough to make up for that several times over.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i arrive and leave when i please (true: i'm self-employed and sub-contracted and paid "piecework" ie not by hours or days: if i cd do the whole month's work in an hour i'd get the same pay...)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Tardiness is a huge pet peeve of mine, so I always get to places on time or early.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Earliness is a form of unpunctuality. I hate early people, especially if they come to my house before a designated time. Also, if I'm late and they're being all indignant about waiting, a big part of the waiting time they're being indignant about is the period of time they were at the meeting place before they should have been.

(I'm never mad if people are late, I always give them the benefit of the doubt.)

estela, Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

thx to fcking abt on ilx this morning i set off for my physiotherapy apptmt really late — by my way of counting — and as a result arrived exactly on time to the second!!

i will learn nothing from this lesson, and have wasted years of my life wandering around outside ppl's house so as not to be the first to arrive by a rude amount: even so i generally am

my sister thinks: time of required arrival = time you set off at , HOWEVER FAR YOU ARE GOING
i think: leave an hour for getting lost or unexpectedly delayed, even if you're just going next door

this makes journeys anywhere together v.fraught

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i was two hours late for work today.

i work from home.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I trick myself by setting all my clocks ahead a little. So, even when I think I'm late, I still arrive everywhere on time.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Most often ten minutes early, a couple of times a couple of minutes late but eh, doesn't matter.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I get upset about lateness because I lived with my mom for several years. We would arrive late to church every Sunday. We'd get there at the very end of Sunday school and she'd expect us to just waltz on in even though there were only a few minutes left.

And any time I had after school activities I had to wait at LEAST an extra hour outside by the curb before she showed up to get me. It was always something beyond her control (well, I HAD to fill up the tank and I HAD to feed the cats and I HAD to get your sister from dance...). So I feel like a lot of time was wasted with me sitting around by myself waiting to be picked up. Anyway, I vowed that once I got my own car I wouldn't be late any more.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s and his sister = mr estela and me.

estela, Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I am exactly three minutes late every single day, no matter when I leave the house. I cannot explain this. Nobody ever notices, though.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Bizarrely...

I am also obsessive about punctuality to the point where I turn up early rather than risk being late. I also routinely used to be kept waiting by my mother (even before she started working, she was just always late) after school. I wonder if this is the Freudian reason for fear of tardiness?

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in a weird office where being late is almost encouraged. My boss prefers that we show up for work late and unstressed rather than early/on time and stressed. I tend to be on time or early (I like the quiet), though. Being at work for 8 isn't a hardship. In the dead of winter I tend to be late more often becuase it's still dark here until 8:30 or so and it seems wrong to leave when it's dark and arrive when it's dark.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My official start time is 8:00, but we've got this rotating early day system, so if I get in at 7:30 four days a week, I can leave at 2:00 one afternoon a week, so that's what I do.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I am usually ten minutes early for work (well, ten minutes before we open) but it depends on the trains grr. For interviews, exams and extra-stressful things like that I am usually absurdly early. For meeting friends I usually get there fractionally before them, but they are all habitually late people so that's not saying much.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

20 mins. late today--my boss actually saw me come in too, usu I can sneak to me desk. Yipes. Avg. 15 mins. When I started this job I came in at 8:15. Now, it's 9:15.

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Lack of punctuality really gets my gander up. I would throttle your sister, mark s :(

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

well she does thai kickboxing so no you wouldn't, but GAHH! you wd certainly secretly want to sometimes

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Always at least one hour. But we have "flexibile schedules" which means we can show up whenever we want as long as we work 40 hours a week. But I always leave an hour early too. I wouldn't be like this if I didn't work at least an hour's drive from home, and hate, hate hate my job. I'm on time or early for everything I enjoy.

kyle, Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

" i have a friend, and he's never up by ten
he's fast asleep with mouth open wide, he's lost
a lot of jobs but he's won a lot of friends
and he says to me, that he cannot tell the time...

he'll blame his clock, he'll say he lost his socks
and he'll tell you that he's been bitten by a snake
his excuses are an art rom the bottom of his heart
and he thinks of them whenver he awakes..."

'from under the covers'.

piscesboy, Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I am generally 5-15 minutes late. I usually eat lunch one day a week at my desk and work, therefore negating most of my lateness for the week. I am not too concerned with my lateness, as long as I take care of my responsibilities, which I do.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm supposed to be here any time before 10 am, which I always am. But regardless of whether I get here at 9:15 or 9:45, and whether I take a 10-minute or a 60-minute lunch, I always seem to leave around the same time.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I am ALWAYS ten to fifteen minutes late for work. but unlike the other slackers here I actually stay till the finishing time, so they needn't try to get shirty with me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost never if I'm driving. Occasionally 10-15 minutes late if I'm taking public transportation, and fortunately I haven't recently worked anywhere where people were anal about that.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I always arrive at work an hour and a half to two hours later than everyone else.

Fortunately, the people with whom I work consider this my being on time.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm either 5 minutes early or 5 minutes late.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Very, and more often than not, it is your fault.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

20 minutes today

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the latest, there is non tardier, all of y'all hataz will just have to try hardier

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 4.30. I've been here since 8.30am, but I feel like I still haven't quite settled in.

isadora (isadora), Friday, 2 May 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Arriving early for work is lovely and peaceful and you get the advantage of feeling 'ahead of the game' all day long. On the other hand, the equivalent time spent lounging in an armchair listening to light opera and smoking a pipe of finest black cherry tobacco after a hearty cooked breakfast highlights the finer aspects of life admirably. Then there's the sleep-in; half awake and from which state one is best able to recall dreams and thus maintain a healthy imaginative existence... Flexibility is the thing, if the nature of the job allows it.

Gordon (Gordon), Friday, 2 May 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm very rarely late for work. The one time I was recently, it was deliberate - I was waiting in for the postman to arrive.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 2 May 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I try for 9, usually end up around 9:15 but Id ont have to be there until 10.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I was 20 minutes late this morning, but I was 15 minutes early yesterday, and nobody who matters gets here until after I've already been here for an hour anyway, so fuckit.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I was 35 minutes late and when I got there the deputy principal was taking my class. I forgot to thank her. Not a good look, any of it.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I arrive at around 9, but unless I have a meeting arranged (can't remember having one for earlier than 9.30) I can be flexible.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

15 minutes this morning. Like I give a rat's ass.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OH SHIT! WORK! Thanks for the reminder.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Supposedly I'm OK so long as I get here by 9:30. But frequently I get here around 9:45 or 10:00 (if I'm later than 10 I always call in). I've been gently scolded about it twice, but my boss seems to have given up, or perhaps I'm doing a bit better. It's all because of my sleep habits (see other threads) that I have trouble staying up even after my two alarms are set off. It doesn't help that it takes 50-70 minutes to get to work. Anyways I'm always working until 6:00 or 7:00 anyhow so it isn't an issue of not being at work enough.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Over the years, the time when I'm supposed to get there has been steadily pushed back in order to give me a fighting chance. This is sort of a bad plan and a vicious cycle.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a morning meeting for the first time in ages on Friday, and I was on time to the minute. Amazingly, so were my bosses. Brownie points all round!!

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I am never late.

I am always up to 30 minutes early to work, to school, to whatever.

It's all my mother's fault (she raised me to be punctual 100% of the time).

Even when I worked in telesales and had 5:30 a.m. punch-in times (miserable p.o.s. job *that* was), I was never late.

Not bragging, honest.

Dee the Sensitive Semi-Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 4 May 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

4 and a half minutes this morning. i was greeted by a journalist tapping his watching and shaking his head. i am hungover. after a friends wedding & reception a couple of us went to a titty bar. it was less than pointless.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 4 May 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm right now 15-30 min late = on time. 45 min-1hr late = late. Over 1 hr late = shame. Over 2 hr late = deep shame.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's about right for me as well. I'm glad to know I'm not alone. When we are all fired we will have a massive FAP that begins about an hour after its scheduled time.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So, what do you do when the inevitable happens and you arrive late yet again? Do you apologize? Scurry past and pretend nothing has happened? For me, apologies lose their luster after a while. I tend to go for a sheepish grin accompanied by a quick gait.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 8 May 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a course plotted that allows me to walk past the least number of cubicles. The other people in my department work on the 2nd and 3rd floors (I'm on the first) so sometimes I'm not even sure if they know when I came in. I think my boss has resigned herself to my being late, and no longer complains about it, but just the same I'm sure it will affect my review and hence possibly my raise. But anyhow, I don't make a great effort to act any particular way when I come in.

If I'm going to be really late, for whatever reason, I have a repertoire of excuses from which to select. They're all related to my boss with confidence and colorful detail, but I don't know how convincing they are. Often they are half-truths. I have a problem actually speaking to someone and lying to them, so I typically send an email or a voice mail.

I should and do feel terribly guilty for this but as I mentioned above, I stay very late and work weekends occasionally (all without any overtime pay), so in the whole scheme of things I am decidedly not swindling my employer. And I rarely get here later than 9:45.

What's funny is that when I've been called upon to get to work at 8:30 without delay, I can do it. I was a camp counselor for two summers and often began work at 7:00 AM. But work was a blast so I had no trouble waking up in time. Also I didn't yet have the insomnia problems.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 8 May 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I managed to oversleep my alarms by two and 1/2 hours, until 10. I'm headed out the door now, but won't get to work until 11:30. I sent my boss an email admitting exactly what had happened, not feeling roguish enough to make up an excuse.

I really hate myself when I do things like this.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, 15 minutes later than I meant to be today. 40 minutes later than I was meant to be.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Only half hour late today: practically early!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Always 10 minutes early, no matter what time I leave.

mike a (mike a), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

An hour late, but I worked through lunch, so fuck 'em.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything from 5-30 minutes late without fail. No-ones seems to mind because I just work extra at the end.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I was 26 minutes late last Friday after the Faint/Les Savy Fav/Fischerspooner show and now I'm on "sudden death" be-in-before-0800-or-we-start-punitive-measures. I fucking hate these cocksuckers.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I came in about a minute before my weekly team meeting at 9:30. What is the point of a team meeting when you're no longer on the team?

hstencil, Monday, 12 May 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

10 minutes late without fail. But I stay an extra half an hour a couple days a week. I also have to travel once in a while as well which usually means getting home late.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
revive please.

I used to feel guilty that I'm late for work every day but now I don't notice when I'm 10-15 mins late. On a normal work day I set my alarm for a time that consistently allows me to get in 15 mins late. I only feel a bit annoyed with myself for oversleeping if it's by more than half an hour. Today I was a bit over an hour late and nobody said a word. (Prompted by The first, inaugural, Oh Yes/Oh No thread... ).

beanz (beanz), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Jim's constant oversleeping is an inspiration to millions.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

billions, please

I have overslept for 2 weeks solid now.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

4-10 minutes on average. I like my sleep too much.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

yes i noticed that too beanz.

seriously, i'm sure no one here works 35hour weeks, i certainly don't. it's got worse since meg started her new job as she now leaves the house before i have to be up to be here "on time", thus getting up at 8ish has turned into 8.30ish, which means i get to work closer to 10ish than half 9ish.

however this still means i am usually here before either of the bosses who work in my office, thus knocking off at 5 is not a problem (having said that i only have about 20 min lunch breaks (having said that i spend half my day pissing about on the interweb...))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

I can't be late - if I miss my bus, there isn't another one for two hours. My bus gets me to work 15-20 minutes early. It's a useful way of building up flexi time.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

my boss finally felt the need to speak to me about lateness two weeks ago when i turned up at 11am (and 10:30am on average that week :\ )

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Once I was over an hour late for work every day for 2 weeks, no-one said a thing.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm about two days late for work today.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

(thought this would be a ken c thread)

I'm pretty much never late. Today I got here a half hour early. I like to make sure I get to scowl at every single co-worker as they enter.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

even though i live 5 mins walk away from my office and have flexi hours i still manage to get into trouble. i have to sit opposite my boss, he has rubbish jokes and looks like moley from willow the wisp. i swear i'm gonna punch his smug face soon.

lucifer, Friday, 21 January 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

new years reso was to be on time more, before xmas i was getting lapse and coming in 20 mins late.
was doing well until today, didn't get home until 4am last night so woke up 30 mins late this morn

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm much more punctual than the last time I posted on this thread, because a. I live closer to work now and b. I like my new job and make a concerted effort to be on time. I think I've been 5 minutes late a couple of times, but that's mainly due to being stuck in traffic.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

I have flex hours, but the latest time I can come in is 9:30. I usually roll in between 9:35 and 9:50.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

we have no core time, but if we're going to come in after 10.00 we have to phone up saying so. trouble is i wake up at 10.01 and that's not good enough for them.

lucifer, Friday, 21 January 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Although I'm invariably late for work (except for when I've got meetings first thing I guess), I am very rarely late for anything else.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

... I meant to add that that's because I find it hard to wake up, not because I don't care about letting people down.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I think it's because of having worked in film locations, but I'm always at least fifteen minutes early, if not more. It gives one the time to reconnoiter, caffeinate, and find one's poise.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

This thread makes me feel warm love for all of you fucking slackers. I thought I was alone!

But seriously... if I come in late, I stay late. It's not officially designated as such, but it's really just a flexible schedule. I still feel late, though, if I get in after 9:15.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Although I'm invariably late for work (except for when I've got meetings first thing I guess), I am very rarely late for anything else.

Me too. I was 3 minutes early today.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I have to be in on time, because I have to open the shop and turn off the alarm and all before the volunteers get there. Also, like Madchen, if I miss the train that leaves me in slightly early, then I'll end up being an hour and a half late.

Annoyingly, the earliest train I can catch home leaves at twenty past seven, so I work an extra hour every day. And can't build up flexitime.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that makes a difference. Getting up 15 minutes late for me means being 15 minutes late to work, etc. If all else fails, I can even walk. This serves to make me less diligent in getting up on time.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Chronic insomnia has had me coming in an hour later than usual since I got back from xmas break. It's okay, though, since I can stay an hour late and my co-workers know I have this condition.

Yr3k (dymaxia), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm usually 20-30 minutes late everyday. I usually stay late for about the same amount of time (even though all I'm doing is reading ilx - and photoshopping beer into pics of newborns).

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
revive!

I was 1 hour 15 minutes late this morning, but it was sunny and I walked along listening to the Pixies and chatted to a friend (she was also late) on the bus and all seemed right with the world.

Hurrah for rail replacement bus services I say.
