TS: coffee vs. tea

I say tea, despite two things: 1) I drink coffee, because there's never tea at the office. 2) Tea makes me sick on an empty stomach.

And yet, I find it more elegant, subtler in flavor, and a happier high. What say ILX?

And on a related note, why do Brits think iced tea is stupid? Is it because it's never 100 degrees there?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Iced tea's become more popular over the past few years. It's a completely different drink. It wouldn't be a choice between hot tea and iced tea, it would be a choice between iced tea, orange juice, water, coke etc. The fact that it's so over-priced compared to it's competitors is the major factor why I don't have it more often. 50p for a bottle of water, or 1.30 for a smaller bottle of lipton ice? No contest.

It depends on the circumstances. I've been drinking loads of tea lately, but that's because I've got three skivvy's at work that drink loads and offer me one every time they're making one.

My palate makes out different teas much more than different coffees (i.e. real coffee, not instant, which as has been discussed before, is a different drink) If I had to chose one for life it would prbably be tea, cos there's more tastes to be had, and then there's the green tea v black tea.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tea please Bob.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Iced tea is my favorite drink, my second favorite is chocolate milk (or any cream based flavored milk such as coffee, I like those starbucks frappuccinos, but they give way too little in those small bottles)
http://www.bevnet.com/images/reviews/frappuccino/frappuccino-coffee.jpg

Translating that into the hotter beverages: I like tea the best.

especiall CHAI!!!: http://www.odie.org/chai/

but I prefer cold beverages over hot beverages

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I [heart] coffee. When it's cold as fack, you getcherself a nice hot mug...hoo-yeah. When it's hot as fack, iced coffees are the ambrosia of the gods.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Although I drink a lot of tea; it's a very versatile style of beverage; I'll drink green tea or darjeeling tea in the mornings, chamomile tea at night, anise seed tea when my throat hurts, etc, etc.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't make me choose, dammit.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

cos there's more tastes to be had, and then there's the green tea v black tea.

There's even white tea. There's so many kinds of tea, no one man can know them all. We give it a good go around our house, though... you should see the pantry. My faves at the moment are Barry's tea, which is four dollars for a huge box, comes straight from Ireland, and packs a big burly black whallop, and the eternal Sleepytime Chamomile, which doesn't make me sleepy at all and is good anytime. 'Specially with honey.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I realize now that some of my favorite teas are made from flowers; particularly chamomile tea and hibiscus tea. Chamomile doesn't really make me sleepy either; it does make me feel kinda relaxed though, and does WONDERS for my throat after gigs. Hibiscus tea has a kinda serene-hypeness to it that's really quite singular.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink a lot of coffee, but I like tea just fine. When I lived in the U.K., of course, I learned to drink it by the potful. Green tea is great stuff; I've even had green tea soup and green tea ice cream, and they were both yummy. On the other hand, the morning cup of coffee is a ritual I can't quite see giving up. There are times that it's the only reason I get out of bed. (And I drink chamomile whenever I'm sick or have a cold -- which I attribute to the lingering influence of Peter Rabbit.)

JesseFox (JesseFox), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Green tea ice cream is DA SHIT...but then again, so is coffee ice cream.

This is possibly the most difficult taking sides (for me at least) ever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Green tea ice cream is DA SHIT

You speak the truth. An essential after-sushi treat.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Tazo Iced Green Tea. I promise you sweet bottled heaven.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tea is for fun, coffee is for business.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Coffee, coffee, coffee. And none of this latte shit. Black and strong.

I think I've enjoyed a cup of tea about three times in my whole life.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Tea, mmm. Although, like Kenan, it can make me sick on an empty stomach, especially if it's black. I only drink it black if I've forgotten to get milk, though.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The preference may have to do with that whole supertaster/nontaster dichotomy. If you have more than the average number of tastebuds, coffee may be too much for you to handle (especially black... Jesus, James), but all the subtle flavors of tea will be apparent to you, whereas to a non-taster tea would just taste like nothing.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but lattes gotZ espresso in 'emz!!! And if there's one lesson to learn from The Iron Giant, it's that "espresso is like coffeezilla"!

There's a place here in town that makes a drink called a Teenage Mutant Ninja Espresso - it's FOUR shots of espresso, chocolate, caramel, & vanilla flavoring, served iced. The other day I was like "a'ight, I'll finally try this fucker"...about 1 hour later I was wailing on solo piano/vocal renditions of classic Ween songs like "Push the Little Daisies" while stomping on a tambourine with my left foot and kicking a cymbal with my right one.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

If those bottled Frapp-o-chinos came in any bigger bottles we'd all be shitting bricks 24-7.

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, nickalicious, but I want my coffee to taste like coffee (and whatever clever tea propagandists like Kenan might say, there's a wide variety of lovely coffee flavours). So the correct choice if you want espresso is surely espresso, not latte.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

tea
the barry's tea of which kenan speaks is pretty much the standard here, its quality

robin (robin), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Coffee's like the most overrated drink ever. If it didn't have caffeine, no one would drink it.

Former coffee drinkers.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 22 May 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The smell of coffee beats the smell of tea hands down.

Mmmm, lovely.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 22 May 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like both but nothing really beats the recoil effect of a strong double espresso thrown back on an empty stomach.

lucas (lucas), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My stomach after simply reading that post says (loudly): "MROWRGRMBLROWR!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear ya!

lucas (lucas), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

another reason, as if any were needed, why tea is best: longevity!

angela (angela), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Another good reason to drink coffee - regularity. I can time my first 'movement' of the day to between 25 and 30 minutes after my first strong coffee. Well, you need a routine in the morning.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, fuck tea.

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

>>The smell of coffee beats the smell of tea hands down.<<

Oh heck no! Jasmine tea is the bestest smellingest stuff in the world. Brew up some of that and just inhale. Ooooh, sooo sweet.

I'm a tea-o-phile. Hardcore, baby.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"another reason, as if any were needed, why tea is best: longevity! "

But tea's supposed to be boiling! That's got to hurt.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't you ever heard of teabagging?

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

chai means tea

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i like coffee, too. as my post indicates, though, i'm just rubbish at making a good cup of coffee at home while tea is super easy to make.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

tea is weak

coffee is everything - from the smell of roasting beans to that of fresh brewed coffee. The kick of great black coffee to (well, not for me but..) a great macchiato. Thre is a richness in coffee i just don't find in tea.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 22 May 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hate tea, I just don't like it as much as I do a good cup of coffee. Does anyone know if Orwell's rules for making a good cup of tea are online?

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 22 May 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, google does: A Nice Cup of Tea by George Orwell

chester (synkro), Thursday, 22 May 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

chai means tea

yes, it does... that is why I can't stand reading articles about how chai (tea in about 100 different languages) tea is so great for you. I know it really is not a big deal but it is really one of my biggest coffee/tea house pet peeves.

yello, Friday, 23 May 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"chai means tea"

yeah, or it could be a more specific type of spiced milk tea.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 23 May 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Just like how you could call all flying discs Frisbees, but really Frisbee is a specific brand.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 23 May 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but backwards from that

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 23 May 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"chai means tea"
yeah, or it could be a more specific type of spiced milk tea.

Of course... if you want to be redundant.... it it's like saying spiced milk tea tea. The chai tea thing seems to be another crude Americanization of a global phenomenon.

shehab, Friday, 23 May 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. "Latte" means milk, but you'd expect more than that, wouldn't you? It's just another way of branding, after all.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 23 May 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

but there are people who've asked for latte, and just got warm milk...

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ANd I know some people who asked for a latte and only got a little.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Coffee puns anyone? Livin' la vida mocha, perhaps?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

G.Orwell: "There is also the mysterious social etiquette surrounding the teapot (why is it considered vulgar to
drink out of your saucer, for instance?)"

This is a very weird "for instance" of "social etiquette surrounding the teapot"

Neither. Never. No thanks.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 23 May 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 24 May 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark is spot on about Orwell. What was he thinking? It reads like he has a chip on his shoulder, following an unfortunate personal experience.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 24 May 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The only time I've ever had hot tea is in chinese restaurants. I like iced tea, but I hate tea out of a can or bottle. Brisk is disgusting. I like coffee. Comparing iced tea and coffee is silly for me. I like my coffee hot and black. I like my tea cold and sweet.

Stuart (Stuart), Saturday, 24 May 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What is Brisk?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 24 May 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Tea for me. Decaffeinated, camomile, peppermint and some of those Twinings fruit flavours.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 24 May 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Brisk is disgusting

Lipton Brisk Iced Tea In A Can

Stuart (Stuart), Saturday, 24 May 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
It really does depend on the mood. Coffee is wonderful and delicious, strong and freshly ground with a splash of cream but no sugar -- man, when you're drinking good coffee you couldn't give two shits about the caffeine rush or whatever. I'd drink it even if it made me tired. And espresso-based drinks, a whole other world of goodness there... And cold-brewed iced coffee, done toddy-style, wow. Those of you who think coffee is one-dimensional are dead wrong -- taste a velvety Jamaica Blue Mountain next to an almost-bitter ultra-dark French roast next to a wonderfully interesting Indian Malabar and you'll see what I mean.

I used to dog on tea before I had anything good. Working part-time in a café has changed my mind on that (though I still drink more coffee). First tea I loved was a loose leaf Irish breakfast tea with a touch of cream (haha, probably because it's so much like coffee), but since then I've enjoyed jasmine tea, Japanese sencha, chamomile, etc. Damn I love drinks!

Clarke B., Saturday, 9 August 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, iced tea from a can or bottle is just disgusting. I'm from the South, so I really like a slightly sweetned iced tea, but none of this Lipton Brisk crud thankyaver'much.

Clarke B., Saturday, 9 August 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

lipton brisk is gross ... i prefer snapple.

Is only very very slightly sweetened.
