Have you ever bought a suit?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, twice, one Next, one Reiss. I also have a couple of hand me downs that I need to slim down to fit in to, one Hugo Boss, one Nicole Fahri, the later being almost transparent in the seat of the trousers.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

An old one from my grandfather, a new one bought for me for a wedding (hey, I won't complain). Used very rarely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought one, it does what it does. Its all about a good shirt and tie. i may buy some cheaper thrift store 70s left over ones if Im still stuck here when we go formal business attire.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was forced to get one when I was about 22, for graduation and job interviews. It was from M&S. It doesn't fit anymore, yay!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Never ever. Though I think I would look good in one. Cuz I'm fucking handsome.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there a thread on this a week or two ago?

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My parents bought me one when I graduated from college for job interviews. It still fits, but I've since worn suits that fit much better (and cost more for it).

I have four other suits, all of which I bought at a time when I was certain that I'd end up with a job that had me wearing a suit almost every day of the week. I ended up not taking that job and accidentally waiting too long to return the suits. I have since worn two of them a decent amount for interviews and social/business engagements, one of them for slightly more showy social events, and one of them only once for an interview when the other three all needed to be cleaned.

Sigh.

New Clothes!

The Suit.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

on the rainy Sunday that sales tax on clothing was reinstituted in New York, i went out looking for a jacket and wound up w/a hugo boss suit!!

walking around Soho w/the lovely Emma B i hit upon a strategy, i asked the Village Tailor where to go; despite Emma's misgivings they set us on the right path, towards a going-out-of-business sale on w. broadway between spring and prince. everything turned out to be 1/2 price

i got PINSTRIPES!! hahahaha! i never ever would have gotten such a thing, had i not seen the look in Emma's eyes when i had it on

we gave the house tailor a $20 to take up the trews and came back in 1/2 an hour; everything else about it was perfect

upon getting it home and it sinking in that the suit is REAL, and that i am actually going to WEAR this thing, i realized something crucial: if i can get to where i actually feel comfy in it i will have accomplished something

you don't break the suit in, it breaks YOU in

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've bought several. I wear them to work. I have three at the moment. The last one I bought cost me £60, which rather shows the importance I place on clothing and looking good.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have 2 - one yr basic dark blue suit that's nothing special. next is a light grey three button sixties suit that makes me feel like brian jones. I'm going to buy another suit after work today. a black vintage one.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought one last week, a Jasper Conran one from Debenhams which means that it's nice but was relatively cheap, it's my first non-work/interview suit and so I feel rather grown up. It's a nice indigo one, flat fronted trousers, two buttoned jacket, nice.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Several new ones and a couple vintage ones.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't been able to wear it yet without breaking into little step-ball-change dance routines, i don't think that will fly in a job interview!!@!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't break the suit in, it breaks YOU in

Whatta country!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

waka waka

*does a little dance*

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I got one last year for my brothers wedding, it's not bad I guess, my hair should be shorter though, when I wear it to work now I look like some aging bank clerk who's kept his haircut to try and be cool. who wants to "rap" with me about their personal finances.

yeah i look odd odd odd in a suit, i am a natural scruff.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I need a Proper vintage suit but have no idea where to get one. I do not have the patience for charity shops and Next or anything like that.

Other than this I wear cobbled together suits from various sources.

Ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer - just wait until you're more comfortable in the suit than anything else. Try no tie.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't even tried it with a tie yet - prob why I go into full-on Dean Martin vaudeville mode

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to wear suit when work. It sucks. I have 4ish but they are all mixed matched. I love the winter because I can just wear my long dress coat and I keep it on while I work and no one knows that I am not dressed up underneath.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean an overcoat, the kind you wear over a suit? You wear that all through the day?

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have bought three suits. The most expensive one was about £350 but I kind of spoiled it by tripping over when running through the rain and tripping over. Invisible menders aren't as good as I dreamed.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I basically wear my overcoat all day in the winter. But I mean, I don't work in an office, I am do field stuff where I go to different places and drive or else I stay at home and type.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i have only bought one suite, for my grandmothers funeral. when it came time for my grandfathers funeral i was too fat to fit in it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(should be noted when i bought the suit i was in my anorexic phase)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You didn't take a sofa to the funeral then?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 June 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I have come upon a real conundrum here, one I'm surprised that several hundred years of haberdashing hasn't quite ironed out, so to speak. If a pair of trousers is exactly the right length when you're standing up, they seem a little short once you've taken a seat. And conversely, or inversely, or whatever, a pair of trousers that appear to be the perfect length while you're in a sitting position appear buckled and too-long once you regain your feet. I plan on entering a reality TV show to hash out the details of a new kind of trousers that automatically take themselves up when you rise from a chair, and conversely, or inversely, subtly let themselves out when you sit down. I imagine it will be gripping.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 June 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Alternatively we dispense with L-shaped chairs and instead lie on mattresses and copulate constantly.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 June 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess Harvell - 1978=2012: Too fat to fit in a suite.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

appear buckled

Well, trousers should have a 'break', or a slight bend in the fabric because of the fact that the bottom of the pant leg is hitting the top of your shoe. They shouldn't just hang down perfectly straight. But yeah they're going to look shorter when you sit, it's not a conundrum, it's just reality.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 6 June 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to buy one suit when I did interviews after college. I don't fit it any more, so I have no idea what I'll wear if I ever need another job. It was a pretty nice suit, but the shoes to go with it were TERRIBLE: those black leather loafers on a stacked heel, but they felt like galoshes on me or something.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 6 June 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
OK. Going to Singapore tomorrow morning. Going to get some suits made. Post some pictures of some good suits that I can use for a starting point for getting one made.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 December 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago)
