TS: Dove Bars vs. Klondike Bars

Message Bookmarked

Dove: better chocolate--really smooth, melts on tongue evenly and has a really nice lingering aftertaste--with so-so-ish ice cream; convenient stick to eat with

Klondike: so-so chocolate, rather good ice cream (again, the vanilla lingers nicely in a way the chocolate doesn't); no stick, which actually makes eating it a bit more of an adventure, more involving, if you will, in the trying not to drop the fucking thing on the ground sense

winner: Klondike. Dove's chocolate pleases the palate more, but Klondike provides the better overall experience

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also a fan of the wrapping on the K-bar; it's like eating fair food--a Jamaican chicken patty, for example, or a burrito, standing up and holding the wrapper around the food to catch spills so you can eat them too

also Paul Eater to thread pls

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Magnum wins.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(funny that this thread should come up tonight as I'm working on something ice-cream-bar-related... don't ask)

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a chipwich man, myself

you know, i dont think i've ever eaten a dove bar

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno Magnum--school me (specifics please!)

I suspect saying this will make me sound like an asshole, but Chipwiches are a little too prole for me

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Magnums are European ice cream bars--like the fancypants Haagen Dazs ones. They're everywhere over, you know, there.

And I have a truly magnificent obsesion with Chipwiches. True alchemy.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What about those weirdo ice cream tacos and burgers?

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I can understand how they might be satisfying in a sorta pure junk food experience way.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the chipwiches I remember having ages ago were a bit too gummy. they had that sitting-in-the-7-11-freezer-too-long feel about them, most likely because they had been. that's what I mean by "prole."

I am, however, a covert fan of the Choco Taco, so make of that what you will

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

chipwiches are really amazing. for months, i couldn't find one here and then - magically - they just appeared at the am/pm down the road.

the choco taco!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Something about the layer of chocolate chips that covers the exposed ice cream in a Chipwich I think is just genius.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Slutsky's right about pure junk food rush. I'll take that "prole" comment back. I used to work for a damn good ice creamery in Minneapolis (where I am right now, actually, in town for the Lifter Puller reunion shows) called Sebastian Joe's, making ice cream and cones--one of the best jobs I ever had, actually, especially eating each of something like 75 flavors as they came out of the machines, soft serve. that kind of ruined me on cheaper ice cream.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

but the chocolate ice cream variant upsets me, especially when it's the only one available

and how about the simple pleasures of your very basic ice cream sandwich? something about the gussed-up big ones really rubs me the wrong way.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take that "prole" comment back

you better, you just confessed to enjoying ice cream tacos.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been eating the most amazing ice cream lately. Today I went to this Gelateria out in the middle of nowhere that serves hazelnut-flavoured gelato. my god. and the lemon kind completely blew my mind. I've never had lemon gelato that good in my life, even in Italy.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dove bars by a country mile. My friend's mom used to work for them and we'd get to try all the new products, including stuff that never got mass-produced.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think what gets me w/the Choco Taco is the exquisite waffling of the "shell"--it's just a basic waffle type thing, but the way it feels on the tongue, a kind of soft serration, is really effective, in a way I don't traditionally get w/waffle cones, probably because w/cones the waffling is smoothed out after being in your hands for the 3-5 minutes it takes to eat the ice cream on top. also, like, dude, it's a fucking ice cream taco, which automatically makes it the coolest foodstuff on earth.

details please on these non-mass-produced items, oops

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

harf

I agree that texture is extremely important in these matters. that is why the chocolate chips that surround the ice cream in a Chipwich endlessly beguile me.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

that looks like a monster

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

that may be my problem--I'm not a big fan of chocolate chips qua chocolate chips--the ones shaped like tiny Hershey's Kisses*. too much and/or too little at the same time. the stuff I like best chipwise are the flaky chocolate shavings that Seb Joe's (and lots of others, e.g. Kemps, which I grew up on) use in their to die for raspberry chocolate chip. along w/Oreo, vanilla, chocolate, and a banana/caramel/choc chip combo whose name I'm blanking, the raz-chip was their top seller. my favorite, though, is the Marionberry D.C. Nut--marionberrys from Oregon, various nuts, and a really offensive pun (to some people--had a few walkouts on that at the store, strangely)

* yes I know Kisses came later chronologically, but you see my point

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I should be more specific: chocolate chips in cookies = semi-dud unless they're right out of the oven; chocolate chips in ice cream = yum yum yum

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm ice cream sandwiches. Stop making me hungry!!!!

chocolate chips in cookies = semi-dud unless they're right out of the oven
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i am also a staunch supporter of the chipwich, and hello, what of the carvel flying saucer?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see what you mean, and were said chips any bigger than they are (they're quite small) I might have a problem. their very smallness makes them delightful to the tongue.

but I enjoy those shavings--I assume you mean the little rectangular chocolate bits?--I had a caramelée at Bilboquet, a really great place in an adjoining neighbourhood, made with caramel ice cream, chocolate shavings and pralines the other day. I nearly broke down and cried.

(xpost)

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOVE them right out of the oven, even warm, and soft I can go for too. but hardened chocolate chip cookies (which most of 'em become) leave me extremely cold

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

carvel makes me nostalgic for when I lived in the states as a kid. but all I can really remember is that they were the kosher one (though my family didn't keep kosher)

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

& I am sympathetic to Matos's cold chocolate chip cookie apathy

(unless they're those horrible, disgusting, amazing chewy chips ahoy)

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean antipathy)

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling we're all going to be really ashamed when we see this thread in the cold unforgiving light of day.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, the rectangular bits. working at the commisary we had enormous bags of those things for the ice cream (each batch yielded 4-5 two-gallon buckets) but they weren't very good unless they were in the ice cream. such is the fate of semisweetness.

the boxes of crushed Heath bars, on the other hand...

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever, more cookies for me, I guess.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't even bring up crushed candy bars + ice cream, Matos, or I'll be here all night

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like carvel

personal reasons

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

anti-semite

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

cookie dough, on the other hand, I could eat all fucking day

jess, is it because they sued you for that first hip-hop single you, Ad-Rock and MCA made?

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I had Heath Bar Crunch today, when hstencil, phil-two, and I went for ice cream.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as crushed candy bars go, it's all about the Heath bar for me. Butterfinger is a distant second. does anything else crush as well as those? most of the candy bars I know are on the gooey and/or chocolatey end of things, which lends itself to melting more than crushing.

what I'm waiting for is cereal-based ice creams. or am I just ignorant of some that already exist?

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

oh you can die then you fucking chocolate bastard

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

crispy crunch is the way to go

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and oreos though they are cookies.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

crispy crunch? i am intrigued. tell me more

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(this is easily the best thread I've started since the one about my mom's ex-husband--thanks everyone)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

do you not know of crispy crunch? is it one of those commonwealth things (like cadbury's) that the usa doesn't have?

well, we're basically talking a butterfinger-like rig, only the peanut butter innards are flaky & crunchy. it's coated with chocolate of course.

(x-post: yes I am enjoying this immensely)

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yo, why isn't there such thing as pecan log ice cream? (or is there?)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Frosted Flakes in vanilla ice cream is pretty damn tasty. there really is a whole untapped market there.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dubplatestyle: carvel, the BANE OF MY CHILDHOOD
*************: tell me!
Dubplatestyle: you dont wanna be the fat kid with the last name harvell and have there be a character called "fudgey the whale"!!
*************: YOU POOR POOR BABY

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yes but wouldn't they get soggy? that would be unpleasant.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

crispy crunch must be commonwealth only; never heard of it. your description makes it sound addictive like crack, though.

on a similar note: peanut butter in ice cream--classic or dud? I say classic; thickens the texture, gives it a weird sludge-kick that makes eating it like talking in slow motion. the Black Sabbath of ice cream? or do I mean the Black Sabbath of ice cream!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Sixties Nine Magnums were SO COOL. And I'm not usually an icecream eater. But the jaffa flavoured one... mmm. ANd there was a cheesecake one too, which tasted really cheesecakey.

Are they still around?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 6 June 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Candy Warhol ROCKED as a flavour. it had popping candy in the outer layer.

i think they're still around. could be wrong tho'

choco taco uber alles!!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 6 June 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky: vanilla base, chocolate chips, diced garlic. no kidding. just like that. really fucking good. chocolate coyote same: chocolate base, cinnamon, cayenne pepper. first you taste the chocolate, then the cinnamon, then the pepper. fabulous stuff.

the flotilla Jeanne refers to are all the lesbians I'm friends with in NYC. (Jeanne herself is one of those friends.)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 6 June 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Australia the testing ground for everything?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 June 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That actually sounds pretty enticing Matos. I'll have to check it out one day. The cayenne pepper one actually makes a little more sense to me (I like hot-tasting ice cream, especially ginger when it's good)--but I'm very intrigued by the garlic business. Must fucking kill your breath though.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

we have an ice cream store called "Chocolate Coyote" in downtown Madison devoted to the titular tasty treat. Damm that's-a spicy meatball.

Neudonym, Friday, 6 June 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

spicy chocolate-covered coyote meatballs?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, the Madison store gets their stock from Seb Joe's. I used to help stock them--they drive to Mpls every couple months or so, whenever they run out of stock, come in for the weekend, and drive back Monday morning with a truckload of ice cream. Really nice guys.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 6 June 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope this thread goes on forever.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I just remembered something I was going to mention earlier, when I was talking about the great gelateria I went to this week. When I was in Rome last year I went to supposedly the best gelateria in the city (a real classy place) and had WHISKEY gelato. It was extraordinary.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Tartuffo: C/D?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I say classic. when I was working at another Mpls restaurant, Figlio, I used to make these all the time. they were really fun to make, even more so than to eat. plus the pool of chocolate they came in was pretty yummy. so yeah, classic.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 7 June 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they're pretty classic too, as long as they're reasonably fresh. Which reminds me of another thing--I was at a pizzeria last month & they offered an orange sorbet in the skin of the fruit. Our interest was piqued so we ordered one. Turned out to be a pre-manufactured (it was even in sealed plastic) thingy, and kind of over-frozen: bitter sorbet in a really cold orange peel. It was kind of weird (especially the fact that they served us something in its original packaging on a plate).

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 7 June 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

San Crispino?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 8 June 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember the name of the place; it was a couple of blocks away from the Trevi. Much fancier-schmancier looking than the thousand other places around there. Maybe I'll try and look it up.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 8 June 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Choco Taco rox u r all gay.

Green tea ice cream is okay, but I like the red bean ice cream better.

What wouldja do for a Dove bar - well, not much really, but I'd kill for a slice of pizza

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 9 November 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Klondike Bars for sure.

Dove Bars try to hard for the "Oh, I'm a fancypants elegant sophisticate named Dirk/Buffy with a pet poodle" image, and consequently, each Dove Bar is about the size of the H key on my keyboard and costs about $406. Because everyone knows that if something is Dirk/Buffy-worthy, it has to be really small and really expensive. When really, Dove Bars are only pseudo-"Oh, I'm a fancypants elegant sophisticate named Dirk/Buffy with a pet poodle" because they really aren't THAT good (they are good, but not worth the price and image).

Klondike Bars, on the other hand, don't bullshit. They're good-sized, great-tasting, and good-priced. And every flavor variety they have is mmm mmm good. Except Neapolitan, which is the dirty ass of all ice cream flavors.

Vonda Shepard, Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

and by "ass" I mean "keister" not "donkey."

Vonda Shepard, Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

klondike fer sure, I'm scared to look upthread and see who sez 'dove bar' as I fear it may provoke disillusionment

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My roommate had ice cream from Sebastian Joe's flavored with rose hips. Fucking rose hips! It was different for sure. I stuck with the peppermint bon bon myself and it, too, was fantastic. I do remember having a delicious pumpkin ice cream there once, though.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If Sebastian Joes's is Klondike, then Izzy's is the Dove. I can't decide between the four of them.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I just had a taste chocolate cannoli. Also my friend brought over chocolate-honey-lime truffles she made. SWEETS 4-EVER!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that should read "tasty"

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Back when I could still enjoy smoking weed, I used to think that the pinnacle of ecstasy would be, while stoned, to eat a Klondike bar while getting sexually pleasured. And I had a partner who would probably have been willing to do it, but we never had Klondike bars and pot at the same time. Alas.

Vonda Shepard, Monday, 10 November 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think this is the best thread I ever started (though I'll count all votes for the Chris one)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn this thread for making me crave this:

http://www.yumiicecream.com/images/products/item14.jpg

Grrrrr. Now I'm going to have to sweep down to a nearby convenience store the first chance I get and eat one of those. Probably for breakfast, too. Drumstick Temptation!

I hate Choco Tacos because I had a nasty one one time and it almost made me gag. I couldn't finish it; I ended up eating half of it and throwing the rest away, because I could not stand it. I suppose it was supremely old and frostbitten and maybe the fresher and newer ones would be great. But I'm going to have to wait more before I feel up to trying one of those out again.

Chez Deanna advocates both the Dove soap bar (for showering up, of course) and the Dove ice cream bar (NOT for showering up, of course), btw.

*hugs M Matos for starting this thread AND the "stupid former stepfather" thread*

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking Klondike bars were something else. They're really good but I haven't had one for ever. I like the way the chocolate breaks into little pieces, but that makes it pretty messy.
The chocolate on Dove bars isn't good enough to be that thick.
