I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 20 June 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like cool went out to eat at local eatery Le Peep for breakfast. (Really, it looks similar to that, right down to the plates.)

I think I'd rather be loved than be considered "cool". The "cool" label can be as much of a repellant to people in general Out There as the "respected" label can be. And right now, feeling the way I feel, even though everyone else around here can be considered "very cool" and Lord knows I could use some more "cool" points, I'm still yearning more for love.

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 21 June 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris P is OTM w.r.t. being cool

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 21 June 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was about 14, cool was "crusing" in my cousin Andy's MG (top down) with Scritti Politti, Roxy Music and - somewhat incongruously - Robert Palmer tapes playing loudly. And wearing shades.

I now wear a grey Marks and Spencers fleece, an HM Supplies camouflage hat and plastic clip-on shades over my Specsaver glasses. I drive a K-reg Ford Mondeo and listen to Nick Lowe.

So, I don't suppose I'm qualified to discuss cool.

Matthew Adam Thurgood (Matt T), Saturday, 21 June 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"Crusing"? Did we really crus? Disgusting.

Matthew Adam Thurgood (Matt T), Saturday, 21 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the movie "Tron" is cool, and so is Boddington's Pub Ale in pint cans with the widget. Another thing that's cool is being able to run really, really fast and kill people with your bare hands. Cool is totally desirable, even if you have to spend all your money to get it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 22 June 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So was Ferris Bueller's Day off cool? And what characters in the film were cool?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 23 June 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Being cool is wearing a leather jacket, and being a nerd is wearing a wool jacket. So the cool wears the skin, and the nerd wears the fur. That's because the cool dares to fight the animal, but the nerd respects the animal's life and the economic advantages of re-using the same resource. So if you want to be cool, be a fighter on the street, and if you want to be a nerd, keep a pet with long fur.

maryann (maryann), Monday, 23 June 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

also you're cool if you know all the new hip music but you're a chump if you actually buy all the new hip music

duane, Monday, 23 June 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I've spent most of my life up to this point trying to be cool, and sometimes it's even worked, but I'm tired now.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 23 June 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it cool to not worry about whether you're cool or not? Cos that sounds really daggy to me, and yet, and yet...

OK, let me rephrase that into a clearer question. Is it cool to be ultra self conscious, to the extent that you choreograph your every move; or is it cool to be ultra unselfconscious, to the extent that you never even think about your own actions?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 23 June 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Being cool is doing what you want because you genuinely want to do it, without worrying whether or not other people think it's cool.

I had jury duty in Florida about 12 years ago (1996?).

I wore wide-legged black dress pants with my shirt+tie. My hair was "all one length", to my shoulders.

Some girl befriended me, but quickly, began analyzing me (as a way to find common ground I guess -- i did get the sense she was into me, but apprehensive about our differences).

Her, smiling: "I bet you sleep in a coffin, don't you?"

Me: "Uh, that's kind of insulting, but if you're asking if I'm goth, the answer is a firm no."

Her: "You don't look like you dress up everyday. Not in a shirt and tie."

Me: "No, my job doesn't require it, so I only wear ties on occasion these days."

Her: "I bet you hate Rush Limbaugh, don't you?"

Me: "I find his show kinda fun sometimes solely for button pushing, but if you're saying I'm not in his demographic politically, you're right"

At this point, a 40-something used car salesmen looking dude interjected.

Him: "Oh, you don't like Rush? That's coo'."

Her: "I do! I love him. He speaks the truth!"

Him: "Oh, you like Rush, that's coo'."

Her (to me): "I bet you think he's full of shit, don't you?"

Me: "Whatever, I'm not really trying to get into a political debate today, just understand that I'm not in whatever demographic you have me pegged for."

Her: "Oh, you're one of those 'different' people who are just like every other person who says they're 'different', huh?"

Him: "Hey! Being different is coo'."

Her: "Not me. trying to be different like everyone else is not different. It's the same."

Him: "Oh, you don't like different? That's coo'."

They got into a conversation, and after about 9 more "that's coo'", I tuned them out completely, and ditched them when they called lunch.

I think they slept together afterward.
