Should the NBA Eastern Conference even bother?

Outside of Detroit, shouldn't they all just take a year off?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 10 July 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Just contract the whole lot of them.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 10 July 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Put them all in the lottery next year. Kinda sucks to have the 23rd pick in the draft, knowing you don't stand a shot.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 10 July 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Go Pacers!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

have they fired zeke yet? (cuz when they do - watch out!)

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
If Zo is reasonably effective, New Jersey should at least be in sniffing distance of the West's big 4 or 5. There were already the best defensive team in the league, now they're going to be scary.

And I think Chicago, Washington, and Cleveland are going to be very interesting developmental projects to watch -- it wouldn't shock me if Chicago made a push for home-court.

I usually stick to ilm, but started fishing over here to pass the time. More NBA talk!

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

-- it wouldn't shock me if Chicago made a push for home-court.

Maybe if Jay Williams were playing this year, but without him, I dunno.. Though Jamal Crawford, in the last month, was playing fantastic basketball. Averaging 20+ ppg and 50% shooting. Jamal Crawford, Jalen Rose, Scottie Pippen, Tyson Chandler, and Eddy Curry [who led the NBA in FG%] should be pretty damn good. Add veterans Donyell Marshall and Kendall Gill, with Marcus Fizer and Kirk Hinrich, and maybe... Too bad they have Eddie Robinson eating so much cap space.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I cant wait until NBA Live 2004 comes out next month!

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well the question is, who's the West's big 4 or 5 this year? I'd rate the West thusly:

1. San Antonio
2. Los Angeles
2. Minnesota
4. Sacramento
5. Phoenix
6. Houston
7. Seattle
8. Denver (!)

The East looks like this:

1. Detroit
2. New Jersey
3. Indiana
4. Miami (!)
5. Boston
6. New York
7. Toronto
8. Washington

What home-court will the Baby Bulls be pushing for? The NBA summer league???

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck. I totally forgot the 76ers. They go in after Miami (Iverson's gonna have injury problems this year).

And the NBA Finals will be... a rematch of last year, with Duncan and the emerging Nesterovich leading the way (that was a great pickup).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, playoffs without the Mavericks?

I don't see that. They got bigger and better at SF with Jamison, and there's always that off chance that Raef LaFrentz won't suck donkey balls.

I don't think there's any chance of them even winning the conference, but they aren't going to drop out of the playoffs, barring injury to the big three.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot the Mavs too. I knew I was forgetting someone! They go between Sac and the Suns (who I think will be the powerhouse in the west for years to come starting next season, when Hardaway, Googs and Tsakalidas' mega contracts finally come off the books).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And Jamison won't improve the Mavs one iota. Just what they needed--another outside shooter! If the Mavs picked up PJ Brown or Bo Outlaw, they would be a contender, but they're so fucking soft. I love Dirk, but he plays defense like Deion Sanders tackled!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But the Mavericks aren't getting beaten because they don't score down-low. So Jamison makes up for Van Exel's points+Najera-Griffin's, gets more rebounds, and lets them not play two point-guards at once.

Is he a world-beater? No. Is he an improvement, yes.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jamison isn't an outside shooter! He shoots, but he doesn't make them. He's ideally a slasher type.

I'm disappointed in all of you. WARRIORS IN '04-'05. MULLIN MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO COURT.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

See, Mullin is my Mueller of basketball.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still a few weeks away from predictions I can feel good about but (and this is regular-season record; I don't think Mavs are going to the finals):

West--
1. Mavericks
2. Lakers
3. Spurs
4. Wolves
5. Kings
6. Suns
7. Rockets
8. Blazers
9. Grizzlies!

East--

1. Nets
2. Pistons
3. Pacers
4. Magic
5. Hornets
6. 76ers
7. Bulls
8. Celtics

Okay -- I jumped the gun on the Bulls -- that's a best-case scenario, but I think Curry/Chandler has a chance to be great starting now and I think Hinrich will be a better fit than Bootleg (as some Griz fans took to taunting the poor guy - i.e. "the fake J-Will") was last year.

I'm very intrigued by the Odom/Butler/Wade trifecta in Miami, but they're a year away.

Training camp opens here Monday -- woo-hoo!

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y -- Did you forget the Hornets too, or are you that down on Floyd?

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

How's Darko gonna be this year?

I don't like the NBA Live series, the NBA 2k games have been better the last couple of years. The college ones are actually more fun than the NBA anyway.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

hotgoddamn, i'm absolutely in the dark as per any of the available-to-me cables here be showing any nbaaaaaaaaa 't all this season :(((

ah, one of them german sports channels, dsf, must show something, hopefully. they usually do.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Paaaaaaaaaaaaaacers! I'm excited about the new coach!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the conventional wisdom on Darko seems to be that he'll be a long(ish)-term project, starting on the bench and maybe working his way into the rotation by the end of the season. Of course, that's the exact same thing everyone said about Pau Gasol when he stepped off the plane in Memphis, so who knows.

Making the coaching change and signing Kenny Anderson really solidified the Pacers in my mind. I don't think the Miller for Pollard swap will hurt them too much -- Pollard is probably a better defender and they'll probably go small with a O'Neal/Harrington/Artest frontline when they can get away with it.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually kinda shaky about the Spurs' prospects this next season, because so many "new" people have been signed and so many of the great lineup that won the championship this past season either retired or moved to other teams. I do definitely hope what Yanc3y predicted will actually come true, and I would LOVE it if the signing of Nesterovich was a brilliant move, but I am eternally grateful Tim Duncan's still around with us, and with us (hah! I'm one of those fans who includes themselves with the team!) for a very long time to come.

No matter what, though, I will always support the Spurs.

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Darko's going to have a hard time cracking that stacked Detroit frontcourt. All the best to him, but Melo is going to be the runaway rookie this year, I think. LeBron will have too many people hailing him as the messiah at every game and will probably be cuckoo by the all-star break.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Spurs live or die on Tony Parker's consistency. If he really turns out to be a superstar-level point, they're golden. Duncan is going to a be a lock for several years to come. I actually like Nesterovic, I think the Spurs are the right team for him.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, AI has injury problems every year! He'll still play 70+ games anyway. I agree that the Sixers are no longer at the top of the East, though, and Miami might be surprisingly good if Lamar Odom stays clean. I don't know what to think about the Nets this year. A consistently performing Kmart-Zo-Jefferson frontcourt could be a machine. But "consistently performing" and "Kmart" have never gone well together- hello, 2003 Finals.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

what are suspecting out of Ginobli this season. One of my favorite players to watch play and also on my fantasy team. I'm thinking he'll start and put up 15-4-4. Is that about right, or could it be even better?

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what are you suspecting out of Ginobli this season? is what I meant

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

15-4-4 would be an immense improvement on Ginobili's numbers, and I just don't see that happening. I think he will get the starting spot- it doesn't look like they're going to resign Jackson, does it? Ginobili will average those kind of numbers for a month here and there and also have months where he tanks. Cat has the weirdest moves, though, I love him.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel that Ginobili and Parker both have a LOT to learn before they can really hit their strides, Ginobili especially. They do hold a great deal of promise, but the two of them are so young and inexperienced in terms of the NBA. Of course, it would be beyond amazing if Ginobili and Parker both showed themselves off to be totally red-hot this upcoming season, at least to this Spurs fan.

I'm not holding my breath for the "d" word to happen, though, not yet anyway. I won't even know about the possibilities of a repeat this coming season until the playoffs begin, and even then I don't think I'd jinx it by stating they would "definitely" repeat. Oh, but God, that would be such a dream!

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but given the injury problems and trying to work his way into the rotation as a rookie, I don't think Ginobli's numbers last season are that reliable. Very few players double their scoring total from season to season, but he seems like as decent a bet as anyone in the league to do that. 13-4-3 maybe?

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I said AI will have mega-injury problems this year cuz playing in the Olympics qualifying puts another 20 or so games on his small frame. And there STILL isn't any talent around him (now that Coleman got his deal, look for the old DC to return).

I am down on the Hornets. Mashburn's not suddenly gonna get more durable, nor will Baron Davis. Floyd is an AWFUL coach--I still have no idea how he gets work. Yes, Magloire's a stud in the making, but they look like a 30-win team to me (which, admittedly, might be enough to make the playoffs).

I'm high on the Nuggets for several reasons:

1) Andre Miller
2) Carmelo Carmelo Carmelo
3) That team played very hard last year, and now with something to play for, they'll play even harder

The reason why 'Twoine won't help the Mavs is cuz he's not quite big enough to play D down low, and I'm still not convinced of his rebounding prowess. They need a big scrapper, not a shooter. And unless they can dip Najera in some mutation-inducing toxic waste, they don't have it.

The Twolves look very tantalizing: Sprewell, Olowakandi and Cassell are fantastic additions. They're now six or seven deep, and look poisewd for a run. Garnett's gonna play his ass off.

And I think the Spurs repeat for three reasons:

1) Duncan's solid, and has never had any injury problems to speak of
2) Ginobli and Parker should be much improved
3) Nesterovich is an improvement over David Robinson in a big way

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

As a Grizzlies fan, I'm a little worried about Denver's improvement. Nene is a beast who is only going to get better, Miller should rebound, and Barry/Lenard give them a couple of solid veteran shooters. But I still think they'll have trouble scoring -- Melo won't really be an improvement over Juwon Howard in year one (and I don't think he'll ever be a superstar -- I see Paul Pierce as an absolute best-case scenario).

Wolves are my second favorite team and I'm really curious (and cautiously optimistic) to see how KG plays with all those scorers around him. Maybe he'll average a triple-double!

I say Kenny Anderson is playing the bulk of the minutes at point for Indiana by mid-season. Jamal Tinsley: that kid ain't right.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Lakers/Spurs is going to be a titanic battle this season. Malone has to be looking at this as his last, best run at a title, and if Shaq actually shows up in shape and plays with some fire, that's going to be one hell of a frontcourt. Malone might be almost 40, but jeez...just look at the guy.

"Paul Pierce" is best case scenario for Melo, Chris? I'd take that! I still think Pierce hasn't peaked, but sadly it's going to happen before the Celts can shrug off the Curse of Vin Baker and get more talent around him.

The Wolves are going to be scary. Is there a chance that they compile the best reg season record? That team is deeeep. I don't buy the KG-is-God stuff, but he and Hudson were pretty dangerous late last season, and they made great (the best?) off-season moves.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 25 September 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Nene really drop his last name? That's hilarious

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 25 September 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Pierce too (he's also on my fantasy team) and think he'll push his scoring average up to about 28ppg this season, but he's still a second-tier star (McGrady-Duncun-Shaq-KG-Kobe-maybeKidd being first tier), and since that's best-case, I think something like Jamal Mashburn is more likely for Anthony -- I just don't see him having the superhuman athleticism of a Kobe or McGrady or the court sense/floor game of Lebron. I think he'll be fine, but a lot of people were saying he should have gone ahead of Lebron, and I think those people are ka-razy.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 25 September 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Melo's not a freak athlete and he's not that big (i heard he measured 6'6"1/2 at the draft camps), but he just knows how to play. He can put it on the floor, post up, shoot it (dunno abt NBA range tho), underrated passer, great rebounder...
and he just came off the best college season since laettner (who was 22 that year i think)
but then again i'm a nugs fan...

TB, Friday, 26 September 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

he's fucking smoooooooooove is what he is. until the tourney last year i hadn't seen him, and i couldn't believe how effortless and varied his game was. you watched him and just KNEW he was gonna be an NBA star. i like him over lebron, but then again i'm just suckin' on my hatorade over here...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Leadership, yall!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 26 September 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the bulls will be in top-4 in the East, easily. did you see them play the last month of the season? they beat the Lakers twice, Philly, Indiana, Milwaukee, and New Jersey.. and OT losses at Seattle and Detroit. That's not too shabby. Yancey sucks. Jamal Crawford and Eddy Curry will be all-stars next year.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 26 September 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

although... they did lose to indiana by like 50 in the last month too.....

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 26 September 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Mullin rocked the most severe flat top in history
still does i think, tho maybe he's mellowed w/age

TB, Friday, 26 September 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Eddy Curry will be an all-star next season. Crawford, not quite yet.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Shoe-in predictions of the week for the West:

-Minnesota still finds a way to not be that great (my guess: injuries)
-C-Webb goes down in second week of season and Sac realizes they've already done this before and throws in towel
-Suns play well but then remember their best two players are 1) a guy who is not yet Gary Payton and even if he was, what has Gary Payton ever won? and 2) not old enough to drink - a few more years to go there
-Dallas will be exactly as good as they were last year - will lose in 2nd or 3rd round (assuming injuries don't force them out sooner)-
-LA and Spurs will battle each other for Western crown, thereby boring everyone who was tired of this matchup for the last few years to tears. I love Duncan as a player, but can someone tell me why I would want to watch him?

dleone (dleone), Friday, 26 September 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

because on the rare occasions when he gets called for a foul he has the best look of stunned disbelief in the league? Or because he's fucking smooooove?

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

He looks like someone who had his face stretched out too far across his head.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i think he was born in a wind tunnel

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Duncan is boring to watch. He's McHale with bonus game.

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Except that move he pulled in the Finals where he cut in and snagged the rebound off Parker's (I think) missed free throw and caught everybody nappin'

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Why did the Warriors gut themselves this off-season? They had so much promise!

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

once they lost Arenas, it wasn't a crazy notion to move Jamison's overpaid/overrated ass, but, as Chris Ford outlined on ESPN Insider, it didn't really make them free-agent players anytime soon, unless they make more moves (like dealing the Grizzlies Dampier for Wes Person, which has been rumored for months). Dunleavy looked pretty good in the summer league, but who knows.

how are the West also-rans going to finish? My guess is:

Rockets
Blazers
Grizzlies
Sonics
Nuggets
Warriors
Clippers
Jazz

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I've finally been lured out of my recent lurkdom.

I can't fucking wait for the season to start. Pistons cleared out a lot of vets (Cliff Robinson, Michael "3 ppg but in the starting lineup" Curry, and Jon Barry) to give more playing time to the youngsters, notably Tayshaun Prince and Mehmet Okur. The player on the Pistons who's going to have the breakout year is Okur (nickname Memo). He's got a Gilbert Arenas-type contract where, since as a second rounder he was only signed for two years, the team doesn't have Bird Rights on him (which means that if a team has a player for three or more years they can go above the salary cap to resign him). That's a big reason that Joe Dumars cleared out a lot of contracts. I'm really curious to see how fast the team hits their stride with Larry Brown at the helm. Oh, and I predict that Darko will be in and out of the rotation all season, show a lot of promise, but not get a ton of playing time due to mistakes and all the vets ahead of him on the depth chart. He's still VERY raw, and it'll be a couple years before he truly contributes. Everyone will be railing against the 'Stones for not taking Carmelo when (I agree) he wins Rook of the Year, but in the long term the Pistons made the right decision. As they say, you can't learn being 7 foot. Anyway, I'm debating going to the open practice next weekend. Prolly will go. Should be fun.

Oh, and I don't think the Bulls make the top 4 in the East yet. Still WAY too raw... they'll be in the hunt for the 7-8 seeds though.

But anyway, the West will be really interesting and competitive this season. Can't wait to see Carmelo and Lebron. What's gonna happen with Kobe?? Will the T-Wolves and the Lakers mesh? Mullin did a great job of tearing apart a really good team. Etc., etc. I'm so ready for the season to start.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 27 September 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Duncan is boring to watch. He's McHale with bonus game.

Thus says you and a great many others.

Yes, he is a fundamentals guy. He doesn't have the flash of a Shaquille O'Neal or a Michael Jordan. Yet, he is a very strong player and a huge asset to the Spurs organization.

I'm totally looking forward to seeing what Nesterovich will do to the team now, btw, because of what Yanc3y stated. It would rock if he proved to be a better player than David Robinson. I'll still adore David Robinson, though. His work with the Carver Academy alone is -- well, wow. In fact, I think he and Steve Kerr will go down in history as being the two most popular Spurs players in the city.

Oh yeah, and do you think it was a good idea for Steve Kerr to retire? I'm kinda conflicted about that. Wishful thinking?

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Kerr retired on top, so kudos to him. I'm really surprised no one sees the similiarity between Duncan and Kareem. Both had great fundamentals and a killer move (skyhook, bankshot jumper from 10), were/are clearly the best players in the league, but weren't terribly physical and/or SUPER popular.

Anyhoo, I forgot the coaching swaps in the Eastern Conf. Indiana will be VERY interesting watch. I guess the biggest thing you can guarantee is that Austin Croshere will be a starter.

Oh, and the best quote about Darko was at the press conference when they announced he had finally signed. Larry Brown said, "He thinks he's Toni Kukoc. I want him to be Bill Russell. I told him, Bill Russell got all the rebounds and made all the blocks."

My fearless prediction for the 03-04 regular season:

West:
San Antonio
Dallas
Lakers
Minnesota
Sacramento
Phoenix
Houston
Portland

East:
Detroit
New Jersey
Indiana
Orlando
Boston
Chicago
Philly
New Orleans
Washington on the bubble

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron: "really good team"?!

Jamison = overrated scorer, no defence.
Arenas = departure all but inevitable.
Mills/Fortson = no playing time here anyway.

Letting go of Boykins is going to hurt though.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 27 September 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The two main reasons I'm tempted to get NBA Live 2004: Yao Ming and Hubie Brown

chris herrington (chris herrington), Saturday, 27 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright alright Leee, "really good team" was hyperbole. But, I don't like any of their off-season moves. They've taken a step back (granted they had no control over Arenas), but don't really have any more flexibilty with the cap until MAYBE 2005. And Van Exel hasn't even contacted the team. I feel bad for Cliff Robinson -- gonna be the first time in his career that his team doesn't make the playoffs.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 27 September 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Leee -- Is Arenas really a nut job? I've heard that there's something not right with him.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Sunday, 28 September 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Even in the Bay Area, he hasn't been characterized as anything more than eccentric/he marches to his own drum. Even after he left, there still hasn't been any Sprewell post-choking type of character assassination.

Though of course, that one game where he decided not to take any shots in the second half... take that for what you will.

Sir Leee (Leee), Sunday, 28 September 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So yesterday I went to the Pistons open practice and got my first look at the 2003-4 team. First off, Darko is really raw and in person looks like what he really is... a kid! Scary that if he were born in the U.S. he'd be starting his senior year of high school. But I can tell why they drafted him. He's just got a freakish body (big, strong but really fluid and graceful) and with a lot of coaching (he has a ton to learn) he'll be a dominant player in the league. He hit a couple shots and made a dunk or two that were just flat out impressive. It was really interesting to watch Larry Brown and his staff run a practice. They were all positioned around the court and as plays or drills went on they were each giving out directions. When something would happen that Brown didn't like or wanted to make a point about, he'd stop the drill and start teaching. Once there was a lob play and he called over the second and third team practicing on the other end of the court to listen to what he had to say. From what I've read, that's why he got the job and Carlisle got the ax... Brown is going out of his way to teach all the younger players. Supposedly Carlisle just worked with the vets and left everyone else to earn the attention.

Anyway, can't wait for the season to start. First pre-season game is against Lebron and the Cavs on Tuesday, but most of the Pistons vets won't play since they just showed up to training camp due to that stupid rule.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 5 October 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Dudeness, I totally forgot about one extremely cool signing the Spurs made -- Robert "Spur Killer" Horry! Oh man, I was squealing with delight when I found out about his joining the team he's been notorious for squashing, or nearly squashing as the case may be. (Remember that one last-minute basket-that-nearly-was during last season's Western Conference semi-finals?) Oh yeah, this is good.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 5 October 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It pleases me to no end that the NBA will be introducing rookie forwards named Darko and Zarko this year.

What's the stat? Robert Horry or Steve Kerr have been on something like eight or nine of the last championship teams? Since Kerr retired, I think Horry makes the Spurs a lock to repeat. I doubt he'll even get off the bench during the regular season.

rob geary (rgeary), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's in for an ilx fantasy league?!

rob geary (rgeary), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna suggest one as well... I'm down. We should try to do a live draft. Regular season starts October 28th. I'll start a new thread.

I think I'm bad luck. I join a fantasy league, and the Giants get hosed (or more accurately, hose themselves). I'm worried what might happen to the Mighty Warriors if do this again.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 5 October 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Awww... I just managed to scrap a winning MLB baseball season due to boredom. But that doesn't stop me from joinging the NBA fantasy bandwagon.

Anyhoo, new thread started... ILX Yahoo Fantasy NBA League

Steve Kerr says the Pacers finish second! But Steve Kerr is a dweeb. I'm feeling conflicted.

four months pass...
Holy crap. Rasheed Wallace is now a Piston. And since Ron Artest is probably out the rest of the season... they might actuall win the East?

Of course, Dumars traded practically his entire bench and draft picks next year for a player who might not even re-sign in the off-season

Yay for Teeny!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened to the rule that prohibits trading a player within two months of another trade?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It only applies to team's over the salary cap:

(I am such a dork)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

wow. what a score for detroit, at least this season. as noted though, dumars might have sold off their future for it. hey, there's always darko, right? right??

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and vince carter is hurt. everyone pretend to be surprised please

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, come on. iverson would play with a freaking artillery shell lodged in his ribcage. vince "top all star vote getter every year" carter lightly bruises an ankle and he's down two months.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Vince's injury last night... happened right after Bosh left with an injury of his own.

So, back to Sheed, Dumars wanted to move Atkins (since he has another year on his contract) in order to be far enough under the cap in the offseason to sign Mehmet Okur (who the Pistons can match offers for but can't go over the cap, like Golden State and Arenas last summer).

He basically gave up a bunch of bench players with expiring contracts, plus Atkins, plus two low draft picks (their own plus Milwaukee's) for the services of Rasheed and a ton of cap space in the off-season.

Danny Ainge is an idiot though. He basically traded equivalent backup PGs -- Atkins for Mike James -- while giving up a 6 mil expiring contract and getting only a low draft pick and cash.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

except that backup point guard was starting in boston!

which means he's still an idiot.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

No he was STARTING... hahaha.

Oh, I forgot, Ainge also got Lindsey "Waiting to Collection His Pension" Hunter.

Dumars turns nothing into 'Sheed

By Chad Ford

Joe Dumars, you are my hero.

Armed with a bunch of middling expiring contracts and two mid-to-late first-round picks, the Pistons found a way to turn that into Rasheed Wallace on Wednesday.

The deal, first reported by Insider, sent Bob Sura, Zeljko Rebraca , Lindsey Hunter, Chucky Atkins and the Pistons' two first-round picks to Boston and Atlanta and Rasheed and Mike James to Detroit. The Pistons also sent cash to Boston.

We'll wait while you pick yourself up off the floor.

We all know what Detroit was thinking. The Pistons added one of the better low-post scorers in the league in Wallace, a point guard in James who has actually outperformed the guy they shipped out (Atkins), and they cleared nearly nine million in cap room earmarked for restricted free agent Mehmet Okur.

The ability to re-sign Okur is the ultimate prize for Detroit. A Pistons source told Insider that the team gave no assurances to Wallace that it would re-sign him this summer. Instead, the Pistons are protecting the extra $4.5 million in cap room they just cleared to make sure that other teams under the cap like Utah, Phoenix or Denver can't steal Mehmet away.

We have now idea what Atlanta or Boston are thinking.

"They're morons," one league executive told Insider. "I can't believe they just did that."

The Hawks keep all of their cap room (which should be around $20 million this summer) but only pick up an extra mid-first-round pick via Milwaukee in the deal.

It's even worse for Boston. The Celtics traded away $6.6 million in cap room and their starting point guard, James, for a guy who is was a backup in Detroit and has two more years left on his deal. I know Danny Ainge likes this draft, but . . . is a late-first-round pick worth that?

Mark this down as the deal of the season.

"They're morons," one league executive told Insider. "I can't believe they just did that."

$10 says that was Mark Cuban.

six years pass...

eastern conference is back back back.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 9 August 2010 03:05 (fifteen years ago)

Wow this thread is so weird to read - Darko v Carmelo! Scottie Pippen! The Suns as too *young*! ANOTHER ERA

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 9 August 2010 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

Eddy Curry will be an all-star next season.

Hey Leee -- Is Arenas really a nut job? I've heard that there's something not right with him.

Everyone will be railing against the 'Stones for not taking Carmelo when (I agree) he wins Rook of the Year, but in the long term the Pistons made the right decision.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

eastern conference is wack wack wack.
