Liverpool Won't Win the Premiership 2003/2004

I think the traditional curtain raiser is just around the corner. Well it is for crappy Cambridge United and their lower league bedfellows...

Chelsea seem to be strengthening their squad quite a lot.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, I hadn't seen the other thread. Just ignore me.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No, this is the right one for talking about the title, the other one's all abiout the gossip, besides, there aren't enough footie threads on ILe!! And I agree wioth the name of the thread, unfortunately.

I may go and watch the Orient a bit more this season.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Like so many other things on ILE, the title is a tribute to The Pinefox.

I'm hoping the Nun can inject a bit of spunk into the Villa this year.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

As posted on another thread somewhere, Villa are my tip for this season's surprise top six finish. There's the spine of a decent team in there that's gone cruelly neglected.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i want Liverpool to win but they almost certainly won't

Villa are shite, and with Vassell probably on his way out they can only get shiter...curiously I am now tipping Spurs for 6th position!

the top 5 really is done and dusted isn't it - who will slip up? i think liverpool will improve on last season at least, as will Chelsea - so it has to be between Arsenal, Man U and Newcastle for who's going to have to give way.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I am tipping Spurs for ninth, following a glorious start to the season marred by a drop in form and 6-7 first team injuries. Just a hunch...

There is no way in the world Arsenal and Man U won't finish in the Top 5. Newcastle could really go either way, but they haven't shaken the team up and they are all young and should improve. I'm not sure I can see Liverpool breaking into the Top 5 at the moment, but it's difficult to call.

Alright, maybe Villa for 6th was a tad optimistic!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Southampton are a possible suprise top six finisher. If Kevin Phillips can get his form back and Beattie continues where he left off, they have a chance. Pahars is fit again too. The defence still looks like a bunch of journeymen, though.

G Man, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Villa will come 8th.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, G we have drawn you in with our talk of footie ;)

so can we assume that sven won't be going to a single southampton game all season then? bridge has gone and i don't think he'd pick philips or beattie if they were the last two english strikers on the planet...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want to see Liverpool win anything because they mainly play shit, dull, negative football - and that's exactly the reason why they'll fall short yet again this season.

Villa though - Hmmm, I think mid-table mediocrity is appropriate for that team. If they break the top 6 I'd be hugely surprised although I do like O'Leary's footballing nous - shame he hasn't got a brain when it comes to matters off the pitch.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Are LFC really that negative? They create all those chances, don't they? They do seem to have adopted a style of play which is very easy to counteract, though - leading to some really tedious matches last season.

This writing-off of their chances before a ball has been hoofed up to the big lad is not on, though. The joy is in their storming start and perennial pre-Xmas collapse. Come on, there must be an optimistic Houllieriste out there we can pretend to agree with for three months?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm none too confident, which is depressing in itself, I can't see us getting in the top three unless we make a couple of signings, but I am looking forward to seeing whether Kewell makes any difference. And no, Liverpool aren't as boring as people make out but they are ridiculously profligate with their chances.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

For a bunch of journeymen that Southampton defence did bloody well last season.

(Actually, yes, Southampton for 6th is a good call). Anyway, slightly more realistic prediction for next season:

1. Man Utd
2. Arsenal
3. Chelsea (close between the top 3)
4. Newcastle
5. Liverpool
6. Everton
7. Southampton
8. Spurs
9. Blackburn
10. Birmingham
11. Villa
12. Middlesbrough
13. Charlton
14. Portsmouth
15. Man City
16. Bolton
17. Leeds
18. Wolves
19. Fulham
20. Leicester

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on, there must be an optimistic Houllieriste out there...

Bonjour.

I have a weird feeling that Liverpool WILL win the title this year. This feeling has not even been dented by watching them play Ajax and Galatasary recently (OK, it has a bit).

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony le tallac is a real gem I assure you. Djimi Traore also.

Da Houl (Ronan), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

some pundit in a tabloid predicted that Liverpool would win it recently, and i was a bit surprised, but I think they will improve on last season (i like those signings). I'll say newcastle will come 5th. i think leicster will be the bottom club, joined by at least one of portsmouth and wolves. charlton could well be relegated, and i think southampton and everton will struggle a bit more than last season.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Arsenal
2. Man Utd
3. Chelsea
4. Liverpool
5. Newcastle
6. Blackburn
7. Man City
8. Spurs
9. Everton
10. Birmingham
11. Middlesbrough
12. Bolton
13. Portsmouth
14. Aston Villa
15. Man City
16. Leeds
17. Wolves
18. Leicester
19. Fulham
20. Charlton

but the top 4/5 will be closer than ever before and going right down to the last day

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

man city are 7th and 15th.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that says it all about stevems current mental state

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm guessing one of those is meant to be southampton

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

but which one?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah man u to dissolve into bickering, arsenal to win with phillipe senderos the surprise don at the back

i do like the look of liverpool but only if owen and gerrard stay fit all season. hamann's already out

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I just put a fiver on Man City finishing 7th & 15th. Good odds too.

G Man, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The defence were great last season, but with Le Saux replacing Bridge... hmm. Baird looked extremely promising in the Cup Final though.

Up front... Pahars will need to have learnt how to shoot again, and Phillips might not even come. If he does, though, him and Beattie should work lovely.

Plus which:

We're gonna win the league, obviously. No point believing anything else.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i knew i'd made a mistake in that table but i couldn't see it

i meant to put Southampton 12th and shift the others down - Man City for 7th

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

We also discussed the new season here:

Who's going to win the title - 2003/4?

I'm going to stick with Man United, but I'm worried that selling Veron will prove to be a mistake. More of a loss than the Beckham circus anyway.

some pundit in a tabloid predicted that Liverpool would win it recently

Ian Ridley of The Observer has predicted Liverpool will do it for the last 10 or so seasons running. I expect him to do the same again on Sunday.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem, Portsmouth, above

14. Aston Villa
16. Leeds

interesting !

That picture of Marsden grinning...grrrrrrrr, i hope pompey do what brum city did to villa ! 2 victories and a higher league placing

William "Bloody scummer/saint" Swygart - let the battle of South Coast Supremacy commence !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Pompey finishing above Leeds is far from implausible. In fact, I still harbour suspicions that Leeds will go down this season.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If they sell Viduka you could be right.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i've decided to go with wolves charlton and leicster to go down. am i the only one who reckons southampton might struggle this season?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, Liverpool won't win it this season (altho '05 may well be the year) but they will definitely finish above Chelski and the Toon.

Venga, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Charlton don't go down! Why the negativity?

To lower the tone by, ooh, 7 divisions, AFC Wimbledon fans have been a bit shafted this season with pretty much EVERY away game being on a Saturday, leaving any number of home ties on a Wednesday night. Chiz. And the league did it on purpose to make travelling to away games easier for our couple of thousand fans. And just after I bought a season ticket, too. Grr.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 7 August 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlton going down? That's crazy talk.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 7 August 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Curbishley has been quoted as saying he 'fears the drop' - this is hardly encouraging for the players and fans. a club like that can't sustain themselves for too long without spending more it seems. i think Bolton and even Fulham have a better chance of staying up than Charlton, but this is not really based on anything other than the individual players they have.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 7 August 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i think fulham will have a surprisingly decent season. bottom 5 will be made up of:

villa
pompey
charlton
wolves
leicester

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt Holland is a good buy, and they've been doing alright so far. I'd be extremely surprised if they went down.

Three from Leicester, Wolves, Bolton, Fulham and (outside chance) Leeds.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I will stick by my predictions on the other thread, whatever it was.

But I like the title of this one. Tradition, innit.

the pinefox, Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But half of Spur's first team is injured already, and still no sign of any midfield strength.

Liverpool won't win it, I don't think. Man U will probably win it, they can make signings whenever they like really.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"the players they have"? fulham have literally no good players besides malbranque, and they can't even rely on a bolton style gritty team ethic/outrageous showboater (same thing) to inspire them. random frenchmen, loanees, flops and john harley. none of whom particularly feeling they have a point to prove.

charlton have a settled team spirit. euell, parker, holland, rufus are solid. konchesky will prob stay. i still think for all curbishley has been lauded he has been unecessarily pragmatic during his managing career and it might yet blow up in his face. also the fucker rejected qpr in 98. kick the curb.

my tips for drop from: wolves/leicester/fulham/man city/leeds if viduka goes

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

if u think i am qpr rejection obsessed btw then i know a man utd fella whose most hated player is WILLIAM PRUNIER! can anyone else even remember him

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i pity da houl

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

william prunier almost scored against qpr once, i think. then spurs beat man utd 4-1 and he was cruelly cast aside.
