"Flash mobs are Python-esque street theatre events organised by email. Big crowds of strangers suddenly materialise at a predetermined location, act out a series of actions and then melt away, leaving bystanders bewildered and amused"

Has anyone took part in or seen a flashmob in action? There's one being organised in Sheffield during August. What am I letting myself in for?

Slump Man (Slump Man), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Pythonesque?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

As in Monty Python-esque.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Now, I think they mean they're like really long and muscular snakes.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I'm aware of the context, I do have an IQ above 40.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a typo. It think Flash Mobs are actually Pynchon-esque.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, their greatest works go on way too long, and most people stop before finishing them.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 7 August 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ladies, step right up and form a line here. That's right, one at time. Don't worry, you'll all get your chance to wow us..."

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"...Did anybody bring ice cubes with them?"

JOIN METRO-DETROIT’S FIRST FLASH MOB!
MAKE HISTORY

What: Metro-Detroit's first ever "Flash Mob" will take place this Sunday in downtown Rochester during the annual "Dancing in the Streets" event.

YOU NEED TO BE THERE AND BE PART OF IT
When: This Sunday afternoon, August 10, at exactly 12:30 p.m. (not a.m.!) ( set your watch at www.time.gov )

Where: Show up at East Alley Records, 336B Main Street, Rochester, where you will receive further instructions.

Why: Flash Mobs are a phenomenon that’s sweeping the coolest areas of the globe – NY, Berlin, London – and now you can be first to do one in METRO DETROIT!

One article describes flash mobs as “spectacle for spectacle’s sake.” Another notes: "Via e-mail, the mobbers arrange to perform bizarre, non-violent acts at a selected spot, then quickly disperse. It gives a whole new meaning to the First Amendment right "of the people peaceably to assemble."

Typical flash mob acts have included making bird noises at pre-specified times, chanting “Marco Polo” or asking store clerks for a “love rug.”

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Run your fingers through my love rug. Be sure you take off your shoes before you walk on my love rug. Wouldn't want you to track mud in on my love rug. Come take a ride on my magical love rug. Feel free to lay down on my love rug, I just shampooed it this morning.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You take one side Kingfish, and I'll take the other.

chester (synkro), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

At last... our minds have become one!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It was only a matter of time!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 8 August 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

One happened in London village the other day. I did not go cos I didn't know anything about it. Also because it was too hot, I lack a beard with which to stroke and I can't even spell nyu-meejah. DYS??

Sarah (starry), Saturday, 9 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa. Flash mobs should definitely add fake beards to their repertoire.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

zz top as a flashmob?

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That'd explain why they kept showing up and then disappearing in all their videos, at least.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i never thought of that ... that's pretty clever

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarcasm gets you nowhere, my dear.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

sarcastic, me? i'm the most earnest person ever

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You lie like a kite.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a man of amaranth ... hanle y said so!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He also says I'm a tart!

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

but he hasn't called you that in the longest time!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, I kind of feel a bit disowned to be honest.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hanle y doesn't love ILX in general any more ... he's constructively disowned the board! all his love goes to his synth and his fiancee these days.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, his recent posts are the best shit I've ever read.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i just read the spinslut post ... it's pretty good maybe yer right

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hanle y will never abandon this board. He guides us with love and perverse suggestions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

One night I dreamed I was walking
Along the beach with Hanle y Deus.

Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.

Sometimes there were two sets of footprints.
Other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed that
During the low periods of my life when I was

Suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,

So I said to Hanle y Deus, "You promised me,
Lord, that if I followed You,
You would walk with me always.

But I noticed that during the most trying periods
Of my life there have only been
One set of prints in the sand.

Why, When I have needed You most,
You have not been there for me?"

Hanle y Deus replied,
"The times when you have seen only one set of footprints
Is when I was posting pictures of the chickenbear. flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"
