Premiership Predictions Game - Week One

Message Bookmarked

The Rules:

View the list of Premiership fixtures published on threads such as this - allocate your predicted score for each match then submit your entry to the same thread - it works very much like the Top 40 Predictions game on ILM

Points are awarded as follows:

Predicting the exact result (e.g. you predict Arsenal 2 Man Utd 1 and are correct) = 10 POINTS

Predicting the winning team and their score but not the score of the losing team correctly (e.g. predicting Arsenal win 2-1 but they win 2-0 instead) = 5 POINTS

Predicting the winning team but not correct score (e.g. you predict Arsenal to win 1-0 but they end up winning 4-3) = 3 POINTS

Score Draw but incorrect score (e.g. predicting a final score of 3-3 but final score ends up 0-0) = 3 POINTS

No Score Draw = 5 POINTS (in addition to the 10 you will receive for an exact score match....this should make 0-0 draws more watchable, ala the pools!)

Every round will run from a Saturday through to the following Friday to include midweek games. you make your predictions for that round in the preceding week however. From next week the next round's fixtures and current leaderboard will be published on the MONDAY before that round begins (i.e. the following Saturday) and the closing date to submit your predictions for the next round will be the Saturday the round begins at 10 AM.

You cannot predict the outcome of a match once that game has started.

You should also refrain from changing your mind and re-posting new predictions in the preceding week as this could cause confusion or controversy (i.e. if a top player gets injured after you make a prediction you may wish to change your prediction - I am not sure yet whether this should be allowed but I am inclined to say no tho if enough people feel this would be acceptable then we can permit this).

Let's keep it simple to start with, and see how it works out. If successful then a novelty prediction can be suggested every week e.g. 'first player to score/get sent off' though this may be done only on a random and spontaneous basis.

If a game is postponed or abandoned for whatever reason then all predictions for that match will be declared null and void. When the game is re-scheduled, it will appear in the respective round for the week it takes place in. Likewise in the unlikely event that a match's result is overturned or forfeited then decided by arbitary panel, all original predictions for that game will also be declared null and void. If you have scored points for this game they will be deducted. It is highly unlikely that such an incident will occur however.

As with the Top 40 game, new players are welcome at any time. Obviously the quicker you join the more points you are likely to rack up.

Okay? I don't think I have missed anything out so...

Let's play!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

no problem Haiku, and good on yer for taking a chance re the 4-4

i should probably warn/remind everyone in advance that the next round will effectively be twice as big as this inaugural one because it will include the games played in midweek

also if there are international or cup matches taking place and Premiership fixtures are suspended then there will be a break until the Monday before the next round's Saturday rolls around. But if there is ever a week where only a few Premiership fixtures are being played then that will almost certainly count as a full round.

it was 4-3 to Newcastle at Elland Road last season if i recall right - so yeh it could happen again but its a totally different Leeds team out there now...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(why is no one else thinking this will be a total goal fest?)

It might be, but all the goals will be scored by Newcastle.

unless I have mis-read the rules, this seems the best bet statistically for us football-know-nothings:

Arsenal 0 Everton 0
Birmingham 0 Tottenham 0
Blackburn 0 Wolves 0
Fulham 0 Middlesbro 0
Leicester City 0 Southampton 0
Man Utd 4 Bolton 0
Portsmouth 0 Aston Villa 0
Charlton 0 Man City 0
Leeds 0 Newcastle 0
Liverpool 0 Chelsea 0

(heh, even I wouldn't say the Man U game will end scoreless)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha...are you sure you can fit thru this loophole zebedee?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

fortunately 0-0s are not THAT common if you look at an average season - you usually get 1.5 a week on average or something

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

but thats still a guaranteed 45 points a fortnight for zeb - hmmm!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Arsenal 3-1 Everton
Birmingham 0-0 Tottenham

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, good luck with those WBS ;o)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

WBS taking no shit when it comes to the Charlton/City game.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. I can just see Charlton getting a massive twatting somewhere down the line, and City are always good for unpredictability...

I'm almost certain that Wolves are going to pull off the win though, if only cos one newly-up club always does and I'll be very miffed if it's either of the other two.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

can anyone tell me how to make it stop turning '2-1' into '02-Jan' in Excel?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

put an apostrophe in front of it

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Could just do two separate columns... or failing that, you format the cell as 'Text'. I think.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

have done 2:1 for now (comes up in Time format tho - pah), cheers anyway

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

wbs = spot on

chris (chris), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

problem was once they auto-formatted as custom time format, changing back to Text makes 2:1 come out as 0.847712 or something, but i'll remember this for next time

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i only started this game as an excuse to make an elaborate spreadsheet btw

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Haiku-san. There's a book called Football Haiku published by pocketbooks in Scotland. It's a very sweet project with kids from local schools taking part.

Carsmile lookin' good for another 10 as Portsmouth now 2-0 up against Villa...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 16 August 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

before we go further i'd better clarify that predicting a 0-0 but the result ending up a score draw will also get you THREE points

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 16 August 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the noise coming through my bedroom window would suggest that fulham have scored.

liked the 'ffcuk' t-shirts a lot of the fans had on as they walked by earlier.

and that is it for football talk from me for this season 8)

koogs (koogs), Saturday, 16 August 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Benjamin is top of the board so far with James Ball very close behind. everybody scored some points as expected (some a lot more than others) - full results tomorrow evening once the remaining three games for this round have been played...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 16 August 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Benjamin is top of the board so far"

Sir Alex Ferguson (on Tim Howard): "Americans are winners"

Benjamin (benjamin), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I hate Wolves.

Anyway, judging how well my picks have gone thus far, I think I might wander down the bookies tomorrow and put a few on Charlton...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for starting this stevem, I'm already enjoying it immensely (I never thought I'd find myself celebrating a 4-0 Manyoo win tho...). And For fuck's sake tottenham.....

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, thanks Steve, I woke up this morning and my first thought (besides "where was I last night and how did I get this pounding headache and oh god I spent $65 on what, exactly") was "I wonder how Christiano Ronaldo is doing." I appreciate that I now have a way to take some small amount of pleasure from the typically distasteful results.

Benjamin (benjamin), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

woohoo, i just got another 13 points and it would've been 20 if City hadn't scored that final goal...watch yer back Benjamin ;)

I think I have two
or maybe three points so far
< /stupid bloody yank>

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no you have 17 which isn't too bad (mid-table)

come on Liverpool, equalise, equalise...

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

So I'm on 12 right now, yes?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

correct

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Once again it seems to me that we could use an "I Love Football."

Benjamin (benjamin), Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No we couldn't! I love the football talk here, but I fear that football fans of the likes of the Pinefox and Jerry The Nipper and Tim H would be rather overwhelmed at a dedicated football board. And it's more fragmentation, and you can read the stuff about I Love Film for my objections to that. The fact that we'd attract many wrong people to I Love Football is an extra objection, as I did not fear film fans.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

well, I started one.
if no one wants to do it,
let's delete it quick.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no, please, no "i love football".

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My experience of football forums bears Martin's fears out. We'd be bombarded with bigots.

Venga, Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

and could the server handle it?

Your seventeen points
beats this limey's meagre score
false modesty eh?

Daniel (dancity), Sunday, 17 August 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

wait till March my friend
if I'm still mid-table then
I'll be shocked as hell

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 17 August 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, having actually thought about it a little more, yeah, ILF isn't such a great idea. I'm in a poor position because here in the US, we don't have much of a look at the stupid shit-talking, posturing idiocy in discussions of soccer. We have it in every other aspect of our lives: politics, other sports, religion, personal hygeine, dining. But football of the association variety is still on the margins. If the fear is that ilxor will be overrun with mouthbreathers who bait each other tiresomely over god knows what parochial rivalry, then yeah I would defer to you folks who know what you're talking about.

(Note that Tim's polemics about football in the southwest of England doesn't fit under the heading of "parochial rivalry.")

Benjamin (benjamin), Monday, 18 August 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate football and Spurs.

That is all.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 18 August 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the first part of the statement renders the second part superfluous, no?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 August 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I like what Martin S says above.

It is wise.
