Picture your own death

Does anyone else picture their own death?

I know it's statistically more likely that I'll die from a heart attack/cancer/whatever, but I can't shake the idea that I'll die as a result of something falling off a scaffold as I'm walking underneath. (They're bloody worrying things. All it takes is a bit of carelessness and .... well let's just say if a hammer falls on your head from five stories it's not going to be pretty.)

I'll occasionally picture other ends - a car veering off the road to plough into me, being shot - but the scaffolding scenario is easily favourite.

So how are you going to die?

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 28 August 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I always picture it either being a brain tumour or lung cancer, i.e. a slow painful too early death. In my death fantasies there's always horrible good-bye scenes by the hospital bed w. my family & friends. Though I'd definitely prefer the scaffold scenario.

Sigh, now I really feel bad about the cigarette I'm about to go smoke.

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to die on the toilet with my trolleys round my ankles.

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i also have a fear of something falling out of the sky and killing me, but in my scenario it's a plane not a hammer.

angela (angela), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to be murdered by my 22-year old spurned lover at the age of 106, on a balcony in the sunshine. Having just written her out of my multi-million pound will.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going out with a smile on my face. Hookers and Cocaine everywhere!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Just waiting for Allah to tell me what to do!

dave q, Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I did a test on the internet (so it must be true) which calculated from my current lifestyle etc that I'd live to be 96. I hope I do. But I want to die suddenly with all my mental faculties intact.

I don't picture the actual event at all.

likely to include a large amount of painkillers

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Something really ignominious for me: crushed by a badly-assembled wardrobe.

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 28 August 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

An old friend of mine had a great-aunt who died of a brain aneurism in a port-o-john at the circus parade. I worry this could happen to me.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 28 August 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, death at abt 40. I just drop dead.

Why The Church Of Me is necessary.

Marcello Carlin (40 next January), Thursday, 28 August 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Something involving a double-decker bus or a ten-ton truck.

rener (rener), Thursday, 28 August 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and the dirty vicar gets to die by your side!

Sometimes when my band is performing I feel like my heart might explode. I have a feeling I'm going to die onstage.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

on a sunny day, with the radio on

chomi2600, Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i have things falling from the sky death scenario, too. but mine is a weapon unlike any other- a giant meatball. i think it is from that "on top of spaghetti" kids song. terrrifying, though.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think from my lifestyle I can expect to live to be about 14, which I reached in 1973.

I only do this when I am depressed - then I think endlessly about cutting my own throat.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably something completely random and stupid, like a tree falling on me or a drunk driver careening into me, or worse, falling down the stairs. Most likely something my own clumsiness caused. That's what I think a lot, anyway. "What if I'd died!"

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to finally achieve something of vague distinction in my life when I'm 32, then, two weeks later, the car I'm travelling in will be hit side-on by a jack-knifing truck. I'll spend 3 weeks in a coma before doctors take the decision to switch me off.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the best one I've heard is my friend's 66 year old father, who said "I see it as a newspaper headline the next day "LOCAL MAN DIES IN BIZARRE CUNNILINGUS ACCIDENT"

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

As for me, I'd like to die as a very old woman in my sleep

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll quote Conan O'Brien's announcer Joel (you have to picture this being said very loudly and with a gigantic smile)

"The afterlife is a SUCKER'S GAME! If there's one thing I know, it's that ONCE YOU'RE DEAD YOU'RE DEAD - and the only thing you have to look forward to is the COLD GROUND, and the HUNGRY WORMS!!!!! :))"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like mine to be like luna's friend's dad except the headline would be: "LOCAL MAN DIES IN ORDINARY CUNNILINGUS ACCIDENT"

(wait, does that mean that the cunniingus was bizarre/ordinary, or the accident?)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice one Spencer Chow, this is to me the a very nice reference @ why black humour is an oblique concession of defeat to thanatos. (doesn't have to be that way)

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was driving back home this morning i kept thinking how easy it would be to die by just swinging the wheel of my car a tiny bit to the left, i imagined what it would feel like to go flying off the tunnel road and how scary it would be for the people whose houses my car would prolly land on.

hellbaby (hellbaby), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like to think about it.
