What the hell just happened in my ear? Are there aliens in there playing drum and bass?

Every once in a while, my ears will clog up or ring, but I don't think they do that more than other people's do. But just now, at my desk, my left ear made this really weird bassy noise. It was actually pretty loud. It happened twice in a row and it felt like my ear was pulsating. WTF?! Has this ever happened to anyone? I'm not listening to music or anything, just sitting here with the hum of the computer.

And no, I'm not on drugs, thanks for askin'.

Tinitis

I hope you're kidding. My dad has it really bad from riding his tractor without ear protection. He can't stand to even be in restaurants any more because there's so much background noise.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

once ina while, but never nearly loud enough for concern. try jabbing at whatever's in the with a knife or ski pole.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

do you have a headache also? if yes, id go see a nurse right away. but it is prolly just a sinus infection kicking in, taken care w/ antibiotics.

half jack, Friday, 10 October 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It might be Sarah...if it continues obviously have it checked out.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 October 2003 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't you just drink a bunch of caffeine? It's probably messing with your system. Your body tends to overreact to caffeine, remember?

Maybe you've won the MTV2 The Incredibly Shrinking Roni Size Concert in Your Inner Ear contest!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't have a headache and it hasn't happened again. I could easily be coming down with something as it's freezing cold in my office. I drink caffeine all the time now. It makes me crazy, yes, but I don't see how it could make my ear bump and grind.

I'm going to try not to freak out about it, unless it happens again.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 10 October 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like an earwig to me.

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 10 October 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

r. kelly has taken residence in your ear. be careful he may urinate in it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 October 2003 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Here are some lovely earwigs:

Fortunately for me, they tend to live under flowerpots and, last I checked, I don't have any flower pots in my ear. Maybe I should get some though. Mums, perhaps? As a celebration of autumn?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

they're called earwigs for some reason, i'm sure. and they do like drum n' bass i'm told.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem is it's not actually drum and bass, Sarah. It's house!

I doubt it's tinnitus, which is characterized more by persistent high pitched ringing or buzzing noises than bassy sounds. I don't know about anyone else, but if I close my eyes and sort've tense up the muscles around my ears (it sounds weird, but I really don't know how to describe this) I can make bassy noises in my ears at will. Probably by "shivering" the ear drums? I don't know, but I'd suspect that something like this is more likely what you're experiencing.

Dan I., Friday, 10 October 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I've had intermittent fluttering in my ear too, which seems to happen most frequently (though on the whole, it rarely happens at all) when I'm tired and stressed. It's never been a big deal, fortunately, beyond its novelty.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Its very amusing how enraged humans become when an earwig shows itself. Its like we are infuriated by the audacity of their little military ass. How dare they threaten us!! What if they are actually thinking things like " I should fancy a bath and a nice cuppa tea now!" and then they are suddenly decimated by a wailing giant.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 12 October 2003 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I've developed tinnitus and sensitive hearing similar in level to Sarah's Dad. I have to bung my ears with cotton wool to go in a restaurant. I have to wear earplugs at cinemas, and I run around screaming: 'SHUT THE FUCK UP!' while covering my ears anytime friends/family start shouting in anger, excitement, etc. near me.

Agent Uranium [GPC], Sunday, 12 October 2003 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I yell 'SHUT THE FUCK UP!' all the time, but mostly just for fun.

Fortunately, my ears haven't done anything too weird beyond their normal weird selves over the weekend. Thanks for all the advice though. I'm sorry to hear about your bad case, Secret Agent (Wo)Man.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 13 October 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn. It happened again last night. Nick's band had just finished playing. I walked up to the stage and suddenly my left ear did that thing it does again. It sort of fluttered and made a bassy noise like a subwoofer. Ay ay ay.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

After the Aislers Set gig I had my usual bit of ear-ringing, but this time it was like thousands of tiny pieces of glass falling to the floor, a lovely tinkling. It was really nice!

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh I get that all the time. A fluttery bassy noise in the ear, I can almost feel it too. Like thee eardrum is "fluttering"? I passed it off as bubbles off air pressure misfiring, or other ear muscular weirdness. But then again, I have had weird tinnitus all my life such as (but not limited to) whooshing, bell noises, dit dit morse code and screechy sounds, so maybe Im not the one to ask...
