Naturism - classic or dud?

Inspired by the piece about the big nudist rock festival in the Observer Music magazine yesterday. Do you know any nudists? If so, what do they get up to? Why does naturism seem inherently funny and a bit frumpy and unsexy, despite there being lots of naked people involved? Where do nudists keep their money?

I categorised this in 'Clothes'. Ho ho ho.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I would imagine some embarrassing or awkward moments, and also i bet some pretentious people are probably involved with the scene, but other then that, I think it could be great.

Sure. Towels are always required. Don't ask how I know.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

To me it's one of those things where I'd always be trying to convince myself that it's perfectly normal, and ignoring the fact that it just isn't. Having to go to a special nudist resort/camp/club and hide this part of me from non-nudists would make it so I would always feel like I was doing something a bit deviant. Maybe that's part of the attraction. Sure, I could see the point that wearing clothes is just as if not more silly than going nude, but being a nudist would just make me feel deviant and wearing clothes isn't much of a hassle. I just don't see the need to go around naked, but, hey, if that's your thing...

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Man, clothes are just too fucking good to wander roudn nekkid all the time. Especially when it's cold.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 07:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

naturism is totally brillian and a staple of british comedy. i like the fact that it is generally practised by people who should really in a sane world be made to keep their clothes on, more often than not german, to boot. there's a good story in this month's vanity fair about diane arbus featuring naturists, too

I tried to google an image of Homer's imprint on his sofa, but alas I couldn't find it for you, but I did try!

Up their ass, just like everyone else.

(Rude joke, or subtle social commentary? You be the judge.)

One vote for "rude joke".

I had two friends no one needed to see naked who kept trying at ever party to turn it into a "Nude Party Man!"
For his birthday all his friends let him play strip foozball in a bar afterhours. I left before that happened. He was already naked though. Some things I don't miss about "local pubs" and that is one.

"Where do nudists keep their money?"
Up their ass, just like everyone else.

There is a strain of humor that links money with feces, if anyone wants to pursue that notion.

I've always found the idea of nudism a bit strange.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

You are obsessed! It is transparently clear that beneath the suave broken-beat-loving exterior beats the heart of a key-party swingin' nudist.

(Thank you to whoever repaired my HTML foul-up up there.)

(Also notice that Horace hasn't come back to this thread -- too busy checking out the camp, I'm guessing...)

Why does naturism seem inherently funny and a bit frumpy and unsexy, despite there being lots of naked people involved?

It's the socks.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 15:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's also the frumpy, unsexy people who do it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

My parents are naturists. They are definitely frumpy and unsexy. My teenage holidays - nearly all spent at a naturist camp just outside Swanley - were, um, not really much fun for me.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

(typical Kent naturist: male, 50s, wears nothing but a sunhat (with pockets! for his money!) and sandals *with socks* - ew. His wife will be with him too - they don't let single men into those places - and she will be overweight and wrinkled. Both will be extremely over-tanned, and look like they're about to become skin-cancer statistics. The other typical thing about naturists is that they all play a game called 'Miniten', which is like tennis but with wooden bats, and played on a smaller court. I've never found anyone who plays it anywhere else)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

wow, crazy, there's certainly an anthropology paper in there somewhere.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is the first thing that comes up when you type 'naturists' into Google image search!!!

Incidentally, it is more or less worksafe, and true to form 100% unsexy.

Mr Stelfox, you worry me...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I may be unusually lucky--the only people I know well who tend to take off their clothes at every available opportunity are actually pretty easy on the eyes.

I'm shocked Kilroy actually had an interesting subject. Thread made me twinkle, though.

Naturism is pure classic, as you have to be pretty brave to shed publicly in the first place

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

my wife used to work at a naturists club in north london. she used to do naked massage (no, really). she'd often be on the afternoon-midnight shift. in winter, when it might be snowing or was really cold anyway, i'd walk round to pick her up at midnight. i'd have a big coat, a beanie, boots etc.
if she hadn't finished i'd be ushered in to wait. there'd be these naked people sitting around on banana lounges watching tv naked. or sitting at the bar having a pint naked.
and i'd be sitting there waiting in me cold weather clobber, trying not to look conspicuous.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it's boring, myself. Except for Diane Arbus' images, I think from a few different nudist colonies in the US in the early 60's.
