Things to do in San Francisco

I'm going to be visiting there from November 7 through the 20th. Give me some exciting things to see and do, aside from spending lots of cash of Amoeba. (Someone I know said that you could walk into Amoeba and spend your life savings on records within the span of hours, 'cos it's _that_ good of a record store. Is this true??) I was planning to go to the Paul St. Hilaire + Scion concert - any other gigs worth seeing, especially in an experimental music vein? Also, what are some good techno/microhouse club nights to hit?

i think i'm gonna be at that Tikiman show. my buddy's gonna be up here from LA for his birthday, so maybe not?

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm thinking of coming to the Bay Area in the first half of December, maybe.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am rarely tempted by Ameoba, actually. Portland has cheaper CD shops and no sales tax. It's kinda taken all the fun out of CD shopping in other towns.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Vote in the mayoral elections!

No, you want an Olde San Francisco steak house!

take you to dinner, not make you dinner.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Take the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. It's S.F.'s best-kept secret. Only the locals do it.

Skottie, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

If you look carefully, you might just be able to make out Coit Tower, but keep that on the DL.

Laugh at the Yuerba Buena Truck

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

go to Aquarius Records, I like it better than Amoeba anyway.

Is it really necessary for Rasputin's to employ someone to sit on a little chair inside their elevator and push the buttons for all of their customers?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

they are keeping those indie rascals off the street. be thankful.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of elevator people, the building where I am working now has a concierge who, when he sees me open the front door, calls an elevator for me, pushes the button for my floor (It could be any of 10 but he remembers!), holds the door open, and gives me a friendly pat on the shoulder every time I enter. I shouldn't love it so much, but I do.

only if he's listening to undie CDRs (or is a possible anticon member), eating a burrito, and kicking boxes of used cds off at every stop.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

do you tip him? you're supposed to tip in the US, you cheap limey.

Oh kyle, I'm sure the pay the man a decent enough wage. ;)

'Fancy'!

It really is though!

The Rasputin's elevator person today was a very pretty girl in a Belle & Sebastian shirt. Her choice of music: The Hives. On a PINK boom box!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

you're a married man, stay away from those record-hawking sirens

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

But I needed to get to Used Electronica!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The pink boom box is always there no matter who's manning the elevators. No one employee stays in there all day; they take turns (yes, I asked.)

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 22 January 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You ruined my fun! ;)

I miss it so much I'm going this weekend.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 23 January 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm officially visiting (as in just purchased the plane tickets) from March 4-13. A FAP will be in order, I'm sure.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 January 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

can't you wait two weeks luna?

oops (Oops), Friday, 23 January 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I might actually be in SF early March one of those weekends...hm!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

JaXoN - I got your email, sorry, has been a bit busy. Formulating an answer right now!

A potential Ned/Jaymc FAP is a very interesting proposition...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

go and see the sealions. They are brilliant.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 23 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I could, but I'm going this weekend anyway.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 23 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's gonna rain tonight and tomorrow. :-(

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 23 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm leaving for my trip on Friday. Any last minute recommendations? I'll be staying with my sis who lives on Gough St. near Market., so anything to see/do/eat within walking distance of their would be extra appreciated. I'll have a car for at least one day in town, so if there's something a little further afield that is worth checking out I'm up for it.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Gough and Market...I don't know that part of town. Go and walk through The Mission or The Tenderloin. Eat a burrito. Gawk at strip clubs and their patrons.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 January 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The bottom of Gough at Market is right near the beginning of Valencia, so walking to the Mission is a good idea.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 29 January 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Gough and Market is right by Hayes valley, cute boutiques for GIRLZ and nice little restaurants (Absinthe, expensive; Fritz, cheap)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 29 January 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Fritz, cheap

Good fries!

My wife was executive chef at Bar Tartine for a little while (before she got way too pregnant)! I hear the new chef is really good.

anyone going to the special screening of ghost world in berkeley tonight? dan clowes is giving a talk and signing books.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 26 October 2008 23:35 (sixteen years ago)

not having seen this movie since it first came out - and also having a terrible memory for storylines - i'd forgotten how funny this film is.

clowes did a q&a, the highlights being these:
girl: "so what does the ending mean, when she gets on the bus?"
clowes: "i don't think i should have to tell you that" (paraphrased)

girl (sounding oh-so-clever): "so what is the significance of 'enid' as an anagram of 'daniel'?"
clowes: "there is none. it's like those literary devices that people impose on fiction that were never actually put there by the author" (paraphrased)

I didn't (it was/is out gross outside.) Did you?

Alex in SF, Sunday, 2 November 2008 05:04 (sixteen years ago)

yes! it was pretty great. we got the huge kramers ergot 7 book, with the letterpressed print, and got 13 of the contributors to sign both the book and the print. matt groening signed it! also got about 15 books signed by chris ware, plus kevin huizenga (sp?) signed a bunch of stuff for us. we spent waaaay too much $$$.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 2 November 2008 05:09 (sixteen years ago)

graphic novels/comics aren't really my thing, more my boyfriend's thing, but there was some really cool artists there, like alex pardee and skinner.

four months pass...

Will be in town tonight through Sunday. I know I'm seeing a band with my sis and some friends of hers tomorrow night, beyond that it's kinda open.

Hoping someone (MWhite? lurkers? anyone?) would be able to give me some pointers w/r/t to Chico, CA.

me: have you ever been to Chico, CA?
[my accountant]: yes
me: what is there to do?
[my accountant]: smoke out

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Monday, 14 June 2010 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

The one guy I know who is from Chico pretty much did nothing there other than smoke pot and get drunk.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Monday, 14 June 2010 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, everyone I know who has spent time in Chico - smoke pot & get drunk are what there is to do there.

sarahel, Monday, 14 June 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

I know nothing about it apart from its party reputation. I think someone I went to high school with ended up stranded up there.

If the US had a dictator we'd call him coach (Michael White), Monday, 14 June 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

I went to a rad empty-nest party in Chico once. Punks all over with cheap twelvers, screwing in the bathroom... no a stick of furniture in the pad. I say CLASSIC.

So far I've collected via IM:

Sierra Nevada Brewery
Bidwell Park (either at dawn/dusk)
Sacramento River
Almonds & Walnuts/Farmers Markets
There is an 18 year old girl from Yokohama who throws the knuckleball as a starter for the Chico AAAA team ww

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Monday, 14 June 2010 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

what kinda pointers? my sis lives there and i visit frequently. Duffy's is a cool dive bar. Chronic Tacos rocks! the farmer's market is incredible. there's music at a lot of the bars, but only a couple actual clubs (eg the Fillmore in sf). the "record stores" there are among the worst stocked i've ever seen.
Bidwell is lover-ly. and yeah, i didn't know that knuckleballer made the team

If you can believe your eyes and ears (outdoor_miner), Monday, 14 June 2010 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

thanks OM, any sort of sightseeing is handy. i'll be racing but when I'm not racing I'd like to do a bit of exploring (non-smoke/drinking unfortunately).

Food, parks, activities unique to Chico, etc.?

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Monday, 14 June 2010 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

Chico is kinda boring, no doubt, but i guess the park could use some clarification. there's two parts to Bidwell Park. lower park is full of trails and trees like you would expect. Upper is where the creek is and it's a GREAT time of year for that. for example at Brown's Hole there's a huge rock (40 ft. high?) to jump into the pool.
