Giving kids silly names, making them eventually snap in highschool and shot people with guns....

Check it...a friend of mine just had a baby. They named it Amyah. However it is pronounced 'Ah-my-yah'. Any thoughts? Am I the only one that finds this silly?

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems a little unusual, but it also seems out of context without knowing them or their surname.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

His last name is Anderson, hers is Robecwezki?...

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the child's surname is...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds a bit like Mya, which I think is a pretty cute name.
I'm assuming the baby is a girl?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure...its one of those "he's my baby's daddy" things. Unplanned maybe.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Spinktor, when I have a baby I plan to name it Pikachu Gundam Science Explosion, do you have issue with this?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

gotcha!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Gundam a family name, Ally?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish!!! That'd be great.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

right, because you know eric and dylan are totally strange and silly and bizarre names, belonging to people that made something special happen in littleton, colorado, 4 and a half years ago..

don't mean to sound so bitchy, but really, it's usually the all-american sounding and looking kids who snap, ya know ?

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Way to kill the thread.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

People do weird fuckin' things to their kids in the name department. My wife and I are expecting in April, and we're trying to avoid these sorts of pitfalls. You really have to pause and think how a name is going to sound when its shouted by an irate six year old across a crowded playground (a test which will render certain names immediately moot). Secondly, you should really think about what profanity/scatalogical terminology the name you've selected rhymes with (i.e. if you name your son, say, Amos, he will be called "Anus". It's that simple, and he'll have no one to blame but YOU when it happens). Thirdly, don't get too creative. You may think naming your child "Spider" or "Spike" or "Derringer" or "Busephellus" is really cool and original and whatnot, but remember....that kid's going to have to go to a job interview one day and explain it, making you the big asshole of the story.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Busephellus would definitely get called 'Bouncing Balls' in physics class.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Way to kill the thread.

But that's what I'm best at, dear.

sincerely,

Bucephalus

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

puce phallus

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Kids are conservative aren't they? But Ice Cube was called Tracey, right?

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, that's Ice T.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, Alex, but I think there should be SOME creativity involved. Having the name Sarah Johnson surely offends some people?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

or was it Icey Ice?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would "Sarah Johnson" offend anyone?

I know there has to be creativity involved. Hell, our last name is Smith...we MUST be creative! But that doesn't mean I'm about to name my child "Star-Spangled Scorpion Smith".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The anonymity of it offends me sometimes, Alex, but it's my name so I have to get over it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Creative, yes. But children are cruel, is all im saying. Im glad i was named something dull and boring like 'Matt Williams'. The only thing anyone ever fucks up is only putting one "T" in my first name. That just confuses me.

This other girl i know spells her name "Aryn" and is totally offended when someone assumes it is spelled "Aaron", "Erin", or "Aron" as does the majority of the American 'Erin' population.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, you are now duty-bound to name your child Star-SPangled Scorpion Smith.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally, I will totally give you a dollar if you name your first born Pikachu Gundam Science Explosion.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

when i have a kid, i'm going to name him dad.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I shouldn't say this, but I do know a couple who named their daughter Valina Moon Raven (the second and third words comprise a middle name).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Names like 'Sunshine' and 'Moonbeam' make me want to take a dump in my own mouth.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't take much huh?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That's pretty gross.

This is why I'm so happy I didn't have a child when I was 17. She would totally be name Ophelia Lyphe.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I say whats on my mind, regret it later...

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, not to be a total shithead (too late), but Valina is just one little letter away from Vagina. Don't do that to your little girl.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

And some witty little kid in gradeschool would find some way to make it rhyme with 'butthole'.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dude, I so knew this crazy indian woman who named her kids "Cash," "Nature" and i forget the third one, it was something random like "Maya." it was just so weird!! the kids weren't even mentally troubled, sadly

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

to avoid silly names, it's best not to have a last name which is a noun in english.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Then there was the friend whose unfortunately less evolved sister and her racist fuck husband named their daughter "Aryan." Yup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

her racist fuck husband named their daughter "Aryan."

That is beyond fucked up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My point exactly!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I was going to name my kid that before the dollar, now I'm totally gonna do it. Spinktor, read this thread: Reese Witherspoon gives birth!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That is amazing.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's less amazing once you see it's been posted to every thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha dude the president of the black student union when i was at berkeley was totally named ary*n wh1t3!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

wrt enrique's question:

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I didn't see it posted to every thread when I said it was amazing.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Karl Hungus

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, by the way, my boss tells me that he used to work with someone named (and he really preferred his forename this way) Dick Swallow.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 7 November 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

one of my best friends SWEARS there was a kid in the elementary school his mom teaches in whose name was "Shithead." The teacher was pronouncing it she-TEED but the mom came in and complained.

This happened in Philly.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"SHITTIED"!!!!! I AM DYING

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There must be a lot of Sh'theeds 'cause I have heard that story soooo many times.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Not so sure about the lil' baby Shithead stories, but I have a receipt from a store that says I was waited on by "Latrina."

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 8 November 2003 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend Brooke is a social worker, and she's met a little girl named Shithead. At least I think she met her; maybe she just heard the story, I dunno. But I've definitely met a kid named Shitonya, pronounced sha-TON-ya (not SHIT-on-ya).

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a PE teacher named Mr. Ashit.

NA (Nick A.), Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And recently I got an e-mail from a Ms. S. Hite. Her username? shite.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Shere Hite??
