In order to get to sleep, I need to hug a pillow. Is this normal?

I get horrible stomach cramps otherwise. Does nayone else have trouble sleepiong, and need a strange remedy to cure it?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

probably normal. I sleep with my arms under the pillow, though not actually hugging it per se.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I hug pillows if I'm alone in the bed. I don't get stomach cramps, but I do feel disturbed and unable to sleep without a pillow if I'm alone. I don't have this problem if a familiar partner is in bed with me. Pillow is definitely a partner substitute for me, as I started the pillow-hugging thing as a sleep aid during a traumatic breakup with a longterm partner.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I dont hug the pillow, but the duvet is j isnt in the bed. And i sleep on his pillows.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm I tend to think that duvets are better partner substitutes than pillows! Which may in part explain their popularity vs. "traditional" sheets and blankets!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you hug the duvet, what do you cover yourself in? I hug HSA's pillow coz it smells like him, and that calms me.

(I wish I had his pillow instead of him last night, however, when he was chewing raw garlic in a folk remedy effort to cure his cold.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a huggy pillow. I can't stand cuddling in bed,it gets too hot and I start to sweat.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a mountain of pillows - if I don't put some other than under my head, I sleep at a funny angle and get a stuff neck in the morning.

And cuddling in bed = dud.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

We have a king size duvet so if james isnt in the bed there is plenty of room to hug & be covered by the duvet!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuddling in bed is nice! Fun-haters!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it is great, i love it, but the reality of sleeping like that isnt sadly. I just always make sure i sleep with my arm/leg touching j. if that makes sense.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I once killed a drifter to get an erection.

Neil Diamond, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well done you!

This song is dedicated to my hatred for minorities and all of those with skin darker than mine....

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Usually there is cuddling before we go to sleep, and a sort of drifting-off period wherein there is snuggling. Once we're starting to enter dream sleep, we both kind of shift off to our comfortable patch of bed. But Pink is right, sometimes even just kneecap touching is nice. HSA seems to go to sleep better after a cuddle.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

markelby to thread!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to listen to music or make up stories to get to sleep. Sometimes the stories continue in my dreams which rules!

mei (mei), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

My scary ex used to only like to go to sleep if he were clutching me firmly around the waist, as if to stop me from getting out of the bed. This turned out to be a bad sign, actually...

(Though HSA likes to keep his arm around me as we walk down the street, and his explanation is "To keep you from running away, my love" so maybe I should worry now...)

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It gets crazy on the road, and awful lonely. That's why I love pornography. This next song is all about my love of hardcore, barely legal pornography. Gary knows what I'm talking about. Well, my bizarre, insatiable, and downright dangerous sexual habits led me to write this song. [intro to "Cracklin' Rosie"] Oh, Cracklin' Rose, get on board. We're gonna ride 'til there ain't no more to go. We're takin' it slow. Let's all do the best we can. And I can turn invincible if I really try-y hard

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to sleep with seven pillows. i am down to two.

kephm, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

kephm secretly reveals identity as the elephant man. ;)

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't sleep without hugging a pillow, either. I tried to get myself out of the habit, folding my arms and lying my head on them and stuff like that, and all I got for my pains was insomnia.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I sleep with a pillow, even when someone else is there usually. I like to sleep on my side and it bothers me to have my knees touching together. I've done this since I was kid. Why would it be not normal?

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to hug pillows/blankets/floppy dogs but whilst I'm actually sleeping ho ho WATCH OUT for I flail and flop and everything falls to the floor. Thar or I resemble an ancient stone on a beach in Cornwall what hasn't moved since 982675628BC and is now worshipped as a GOD or something.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I still really like to sleep with my ancient stuffed kitty. :(

mr teeny does the pillow-btwn-legs thing too except sometimes in the middle of the night he mistakes me for a pillow and I end up being woken up by being smushed.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That made me laugh. I don't know why, but it did. Possibly just because I am inordinately amused by Mr. Teeny's name and plus the word "smushed".

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yay for floppy dogs!

i sleep with my quilts/comforters bunched up around me. I can't have my knees touching either, since i'll never get to sleep.

snuggling with someone else is always fun, but staying like that til i fall completely asleep is difficult. Thanks to back problems, i can only fall asleep while laying on one side, and i tend to get all-a-shifty.

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

all-a-shifty? *sniggers*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, forgive me for asking, but what is wrong with having your knees touching when you sleep? (I'm assuming you mean your own knees.) I thought this was a strange individual foible, but now it seems many people share it.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it helps to align the spine correctly if your knees are apart a bit!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, that makes sense then.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I only ever sleep with a pillow between my knees if I have a bad back.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I also still sleep with my ancient stuffed kitty since i've had since i was 3 - god i don't even want to think how many times i must have thrown up on it when i was sick as a kid! her name is allison since that was the the name of my 1st-thru-5th grade crush and i wanted to "sleep with" allison even though i honestly didn't know what that meant back then, i just had to name it that to make the statement come true. something in this post probably explains my mental illness(es)

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i think teeny's right. It kind of hurts my back if I don't have the top knee supported.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a polar bear.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

K-BLIMEY!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I find periodically when trying to sleep I keep gasping for air every few seconds, just as I am about to actually fall asleep. It's like I stop breathing properly as I drift off. I've seen people do this before but is there any solution for it?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a pillow-hugger as well. also: down comforter, stuffed animals. i like to snuggle.

atomic horseradish (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

thats sounds like sleep apnea ronan.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

you've seen people do that before?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I find that I fall sleep really quickly if I put a little bit of pressure on my sternum, like a paperweight or something.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

does RJG? What is sleep apnea?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

do you only watch people you know, falling asleep?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sleep apnea is defined as the cessation of breathing during sleep.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, blindsided!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha saraj that's great!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right, wouldn't I die?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

saraj=sarah obv!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No, there are two kinds of sleep apnea. Do you snore?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course not! (yeah I think so)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

a thread devoted to stuffed animals

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm. well you really wouldn't know if you had it or not unless you went a did a sleep study. if they found out you did the doctors would put you on a c-pap machine that you'd have to wear while you slept. Looks cozy eh.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I probably don't I guess, I still sleep eventually, it just takes a while sometimes.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

is that kingfish, chris b. sure?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The knees together thing: when it's hot if my knees are together they get all over-hot and get red patched on the inside so I use a pillow as a separator.

Didn't know abt the back thing.

Any advice on how I can stop sleeping on my arms and waking up numb?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

or nate patrin?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not me. the mask isn't big or grand enough...

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand those who don't like falling asleep holding someone else, or being held. I love doing that, though I confess if I'm feeling really restless it sometimes won't work.

Favourite falling asleep position, alone: on my left side, left hand under the pillow under my head, right hand holding the corner of the duvet.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

They design pillows specifically for people who want to hug a body-length big cushiony thing. Pillow technology is quite insane these days (as any visit to a Bed, Bath, and Beyond will show you.)

Honestly though, during my anxiety-triggered insomnia, I had to get one of those Isotonic pillows (the one that's firm where you press your hand down and it comes back up just like before and it feels all velvet and dreamy and unreal and stuff), and the thing is greeeeeat.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh GOD i read that as " people who want to hug a body bag"...

it's like a bean bag, only filled with rotting human parts!

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

this is so how i do not sleep:

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Baby blankets, fools. So many people still sleep with them.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like hugging your partner, but without all the backtalk.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Thursday, 13 November 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all true-i employ pillow, knee-pillow, and hug-pillow

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Thursday, 13 November 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I sleep with a body pulsing with vodka. Is this normal?

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 13 November 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Not if that body belongs to a donkey.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 13 November 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)
