what's the oldest mixtape you own? who made it for you? why? do you still listen to it? what's on it?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i just found a box of them in the attic the other day. the oldest one is - i think, judging by the content - from 1994. the label "with <3 4 jess" leads me to believe it was made by alexis. if i find it tonight i will post a tracklist.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

in a box somewhere i have one i made for myself around 1990ish. it's full of mostly australian indie 45s. i forget exactly what was on it but i'm sure i still spin tracks from it occasionally.

subthread: the breakup mixtape: good idea or bad? who is for: you or the other party?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Breakup mixtape"? Wow is that like a Maine thing? I thought it was just Cry Fuck Flee and find something else.

...

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"..." yourself! I just find the thought of DOING SOMETHING for someone you're about to break up with a bit wasteful thats all.

Dancing Queen, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm i've never much been one for the "mood mix", but i can see worth in it

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

breakup mixtape is excellent idea.

the oldest mixtape i own is from 98 and its a seduction mix from the girl i ended up losing my virginity to about a week later.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

opening track: Elvis Costello, "I Want You"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

well, thats a bit why i asked for you or them. i have known people who have made it for "them", but they're hopeless. whenever i make a mixtape breakup its full of weepy trash and misogynist favorites designed to reinforce my sense of crushing despair and superiority all at once.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got one by... a girlfriend better left in the past (even if I did play Trivial Pursuit with her yesterday) from five years back. It's got the theme tune to "Bertha" on it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

we EXCHANGED mixes with my breakup.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

if i have a couple more beers i will post my most recent breakup mixtape

Breakup Mix

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

though I've made a kajillion, people don't tend to make me mixtapes, probably cuz they don't think I'd listen to them much (and I'm ashamed to admit they're usually right). My sister made me one for xmas that I don't listen to enough (esp. since she was nice enough to find that Sparkle/R. Kelly duet "Be Careful!"). My ex-girlfriend took all the MP3s I'd gotten of Napster on her computer and made a big three tape collection of them for me on my birthday and filled up the last tape with other songs she liked. I listened to them a lot last fall when I was raking, though haven't listened to them much recently. Though if I actually had to rake this fall I'd definitely be playing them.

I can't remember the specific song orders of the mixtapes I made for my ex after we broke up (which were definitely SORTA breakup tapes). Thankfully none of the happy or sad songs I've put on mixtapes for people necessarily remind me of them. I'm more apt to be struck with memories when I hear something THEY were really into and I didn't care for as much.

And when you go to Anthony's Cafe Americain, please, PLEASE don't ask to hear some Belle & Sebastian.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

no way jess, my old mix tapes rule!!!! i finally lost my best one and maybe my first, from 1988, which had: minor threat, galaxie 500, the jean-paul sartre experience, blues traveller (!!), husker du, jane's addiction, dinosaur jr., ozzy osbourne --- sarah press where are you??! still in la jolla?! cambridge, massachusetts? this girl came thru knoxville two years later on a road trip with her best friend. they were driving a camaro with an L7 sticker on the back, and they got me high -- jeeeezus christ!

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we should do a breakup mix cd/tape exchange.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I never got mixtapes till a year or so ago, I'm mostly the maker. they'd better fucking keep them, they're all amazing tho not specific to breakups or anything, I've never gone out w/anyone ever

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm exaggerating a bit there, actually.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i am disappointed by the way this petered out!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got an old girlfriend's phone number yesterday. it was awesome!
I should dig out some mixtapes!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a couple of mix tapes my friend Trey made, they were called Punkology and I think he got up to like volume 11 or something. They are a hodgepodge of Descendents, shitty pop punk, some crusty stuff, and Built to Spill. They have some great stuff scattered here and there though.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Break-up mix tape better than break-up snog. That sure was confusin'.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Arcwelder - It's A Wonderful Lie

That brings back memories. The oldest C90 comp I've got has that on too, right next to Supermodel Superficial and for some reason Psychadelic Warlords by Hawkwind.

Vat vas I feeking?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You should try to avoid listening to all music during breakups as this renders the song & usually the artist out of bounds afterwards.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther is otm, so goddam OTM !!!!!!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to make mixtapes off of the stereo hookup when we got mtv in the early 80s, so i've got like 100 60min tapes full of weird early 80s trash in mom's attic. in high school, my best friend and i used to make tapes for each other all of the time. likewise, they're all at my parents' house. some songs i remember from those: star power - sonic youth, cool your power - pain teens, my noise - superchunk, borrow my body - aurora paralysis, box elder - pavement... what up, indie rock boys!
i've made lots of breakup tapes for myself, one of which my father confiscated as he was worried that i was going to do a sylvia plath. making one for the other person seems like the worst sort of madness, but what do i know.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i just realized this tape and this girl are to blame for my enduring split personality!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, screeching weasel. "teenage freakshow" and "every night" were mix favorites of mine, as was jawbreaker's "chesterfield king." eek!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh. i bet i still have those screeching weasel cassettes upstairs somewhere.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I (maybe) still have two mixtapes made by my first boyfriend. 1994-5ish. By the look of them, he was trying to educate me out of Britpop and Sixties pop and into more 'complex' rock... The breakup was fairly painless (more than can be said for the sex ha) so I kept listening to them for ages.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i now have an overpowering desire to listen to 'anthem for a new tomorrow.' HELP!!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Kids - when ecstatically happy, listen to LOADS OF MUSIC as it'll all then remind you of happy times and make you happy when listening to it in the future. Hurrah!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I gave all my mixtapes to my old girlfriend Amie--I have her ALL my tapes actually! was in the middle of doing the CDs-only thing and she liked tapes so.... don't regret it at all, though.

didn't make my first mixtape until I was 22! I was such a rockist, sigh.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(remember opening sequence of that one but not much more: U2, "The Fly" --> My Bloody Valentine, "Only Shallow" --> Tricky, "Feed Me" --> Peshay, "The Real Thing (90 BPM Version)." January 1997. sigh.)

4/22/95. My junior year of high school. The tape's from my friend Chris, a sophomore at the time who was quiet but also radiantly cool in this skinny indie-kid way. I think he liked me because I was smart and funny, even though I felt completely plain and nerdish next to him, lacking any kind of hip cred. He was also cute. For much of my junior and senior year, I had a total crush on him that apexed with us making out one night almost exactly a year after he made me this tape. Notes: 1. Chris's 16-year-old musical interests were heavily influenced by his older sister, Kim, who lived in Portland. 2. This is the first time I ever heard the Pixies, Fugazi, and Slint, among others.

Side A
Sonic Youth, "Kool Thing"
Soul Coughing, "Casiotone"
They Might Be Giants, "The Statue Got Me High"
Hazel, "Day Glo"
Wedding Present, "Dalliance"
Tsunami, "In a Name"
.30-06, "Tuckahoe"
Pixies, "Broken Face"
Breeders, "Fortunately Gone"
Mudhoney, "Techno"
Mudhoney, "Six Two One"
L7, "The Bomb"
PJ Harvey, "50 Ft. Queenie"
Soul Coughing, "Down to This"
Nirvana, "MV"
Beastie Boys, "Honky Rink"

Side B
Man ... or Astroman, "A Mouthful of Exhaust"
Tuscadero, "Angel in a Half Shirt"
Fugazi, "Smallpox Champion"
Pixies, "Isla de Encanta"
Slint, "Breadcrumb Trail"
Pavement, "You're Killing Me"
Lemonheads, "Glad I Don't Know"
Soul Coughing, "Screenwriter's Blues"
They Might Be Giants, "Spider"
They Might Be Giants, "I Palindrome I"
Built to Spill, "Israel's Song"
.30-06, "Huck"
Phish, "Chalk Dust Torture"
Hazel, "Everybody's Best Friend"

I listened to this tape a lot that summer (of 1995), but hardly ever anymore. Over the next few years, he made me about four or five other tapes, and there's a couple of those that I'll put on every so often. (They're much less "My cool big sister lives in Portland, but I'm 16 and still like They Might Be Giants." By the end of college, he was more into stuff like Nobukazu Takemura.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

jbr: i don't want to write about any good/meaningful mixtapes i've gotten... that's unfun. i just want to write about "Thank You, Jody B. Rosen."
ckb: hahahaha
jbr: sophomore year
jbr: i'd just transferred into binghamton
jbr: was starting to make friends with seniors, grad students, etc
jbr: and immediately got invited to a party in the grad dorms
jbr: it was my first week there, basically
jbr: and i was like "hey! college! drinking! fun!"
ckb: hahahaha
jbr: got really drunk and somehow ended up in bed with the guy who was hosting the party
ckb: party!
jbr: i sorta wasn't into it and was like "okay well here i am let's get this over with"
ckb: awww, and he made you a mix tape
jbr: he was terribly nervous and revealed "oh by the way i'm a virgin"
ckb: !!!
jbr: i was like "oh!"
jbr: so after that night (which i regretted) i sort of forgot about the guy and tried to ignore him when i saw him
jbr: but he was all "wow, that was really special! i have a girlfriend now!" and chased me around campus
ckb: oh no!
jbr: and made me "Thank You, Jody B. Rosen"
ckb: you're actually the first girlfriend who has ever given me a mix tape
jbr: really?
ckb: yah!
ckb: the only other mix CDs i received were from the "crush CD thread"
jbr: i will make you many more mixes
ckb: :-)
ckb: thank you jody b. rosen *ducks*
jbr: HAHAHA
