So farewell then

Sothern Region slam door trains. Gone by the end of the year, well not quite the new trains can't be used because they draw too much power and the power upgrade started late.

Quite frankly they are knackered and I wouldn't want to use them every day (I did for about 6 months when I got the North London Line just before they moved over to the sliding door trains), they are not terribly comfortable. I took a ride out to Ashford yesterday as a farewell. they do have a certain charm and they retain compartments which I always enjoy. Good for Assignations and the like.

that's really sad -- will the london-brighton train be a non-carriage thing?

enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate slam-door trains. Most of my commuting life is spent on them as well as regular trips up to London. Are the Portsmouth-London/Portsmouth-Southampton services included in the upgrade Ed?

London Brighton, is being replaced, by Electrostars although I believe the London Brighton Fasts have been sliding door for some time.

an electrostar

All slam doors will have to go by december 31st this year due to HSE regulations but will still be in use well into 2004, due to the power problems, all should be gone by 2005. I think Portsmouth will get the aforementioned electrostars but I'm not sure.

Can we have some clarification about what Ed's talking about here? Is it the doors you have to shut yourself? Wot a chiz, those trains are the bestest (I am biased here because those trains have more space on 'em due to having more than the two or three carriages the Other Lot put on).

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

We're not talking Intercities here only in the southern region. The new trains will be diagrammed just as long as the ones they are replacing. Talking of intercities, plenty of good quality carriages are now sitting rusting prematurely but that's a whole other thread.

i hate slam door, good to be shot of them

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the noise of the doors when they slam.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Slam doors scare me! I always make HSA do them because I am chicken.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I also love being able to open the door as the train glides to a stop.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I will miss the strangely erotic crepuscular charms of their first class compartments.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh! Argh! I hate doors which can open while the train is in motion! Surely that is not safe!

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hence the main reason for their imminent demise.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I love doors which you can open while the train is in motion by leaning out of the window because there's no handle on the inside - there are too few opportunities in my life to look dead hard.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Or dead stupid or just dead when a passing outside thing swoops by and chops yer hand off!

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Not if you're careful. I am concerned that the replacement trains are likely to have unopenable windows and air conditioning that will pack in some time around... August 2004.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Be not afear'd of passing outside things - they give delight and hurt not.

Is this the first ever no-holds-barred trainspotting thread on ILE?

hell no

A Thread for Pictures of Trains

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I do love compartments on trains. When I was doing the New Cross to Charing Cross commute, one of the few things that could make me feel better about the lateness/ over-crowding/ utter incompetance of Connex South Eastern was sliding into a compartment and attempting to make my surroundings into Brief Encounter/ Anna Karenina by sheer force of will.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen too many scary Hitchcock type films where people are MURDERED IN COMPARTMENTS OF TRAINS that I'm even more scared by them than by the passing outside things.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

marcello owes me all the coffee that just came out of my nose, and my employers a new keyboard.

enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

So who is up for a Slam door farewell tour of the Southeast. I'll work out how to do it on the cheap.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll work out how to do it on the cheap.

easy -- one buys tickets, the rest wait at a known slowing down point (=the entire journey), and hey presto person 1 can open the door.

enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Good to see the back of them. Corral them all into a deep pit and shoot at them with rifles, I say.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Madchen's picture someone puishing Tom Millar out of a train? This time, Ally, you've GONE TOO FAR!!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

spooky resemblance
