first encountered it through nylpm, which I found either through google or a random link; was kind of overwhelmed; returned months later at jones's urging

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Google led me here about 18 months ago - I was bored at work one day and did a search on "Best. Thread. Ever." and it brought up ILE. I lurked and read for quite a long time before having the nerve to post anything, and I finally de-lurked by opening a virtual bar (I wonder what happened to that??) and inviting you all in for a drink and a chat.

The humour, the intelligence, the hissy fits, the kittens, the twee-ness, the lively debates and the lovely lovely people are what keep me here (though I don't have much spare time to join in, but I do read lots of threads).

This place rocks :))

I could lie, and say Ned dragged me in kicking and screaming. (Actually, that sounds good, so let's stick with that.)

Why stay? 1/2 serious commentary, 1/4 silliness and 1/4 comraderie and good vibes.

Hey, yeah! Could somebody tell me about the really early history of ILX? Like, right at the beginning before ILE was around... So Tom started it, but did he and some of the other people used to hang out on some other forum or something? I heard someone mention that they knew Teh Hongro back from alt.popmusic or somewhere...

Dan I., Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(Teh Hongro?... Dang, I must've missed really huge chunks of world history ;)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Today's the first time I have visited. In the middle of a couple of weeks off before I start a new job and I realised i have nothing much outside my work to keep me occupied. So i guess panic and a little curiosity brought me. You guys seem to have a real rapport - do you mind newbies posting?

Melly E, Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly can't remember. I think I've been reading it since greenspun off and on. It only became something I dealt with constantly a year ago though when my job became unbearably dull. But I remember Tom and Ned from AMA which was why it orignally caught my eye.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Melly E, No, and welcome. Not that I can speak for the rest of ILX. I don't usually post as actively (especially on ILE) as I have been doing in the past week.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 24 November 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Ewing's first post to alt.music.alternative appears to be this. Any pre-history of ILx must start with it, for sure.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 November 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! this inspired me to search for my first AMA post:

OK, because I keep seeing these posts, here it is again.
This is my own tiny BECK FAQ, in response to the numerous postings
for info:

Beck is not a band. Beck is a little guy who lives in Silverlake,
and who until very recently got drunk with the rest of us poor slobs
and played a beat up old guitar at backyard parties and in coffee
houses. See the last ish of BAM for the full flavor.

He's on a split single w/ the now-defunct Bean on Flipside Records
This song is not to be missed, even if you get it mailorder. It's
"MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack"
Also, Brad from Bongload, put out a Loser single

He was recording at Tom Grimley's when evidently the band That Dog
(who were also recording and who are well connected in the "big time"
industry) got Geffen interested in him. KXLU stopped playing him.
KROQ started. He was signed, and I have no idea how they're going
to recreate all that backing (he is usually in the past alone w/
an acoustic guitar) music.

He is a cool guy, and all the moaning I've been seeing about
"selling out" is a pile of dung rotting in the suburban cyberscape.

This is my first-ever post to a.m.a. (and USENET, for that matter). And I'm talking about the AOL MST3K boards! And I'm responding to an Ally post!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 November 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like my last ama post better then the first. (That might've been a crosspost from rmi though.)

Makes me think of the goth from FFX all done up pop-star-like.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 24 November 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was googling for Baby Namboos lyrics and it spit out the old white Josh Blog, I liked what I saw and checked out the link to ILM (still on greenspun), but I was all anti-pop then so I'm all wtf, then Josh kept plugging the site in his blog so I figure hey why not and the rest is as they say historiography.

WELCOME, MELLY E! It's so great to have you here!

I suppose I'm still a bit "newbie"-ish, seeing as though I've only been posting here since April and reading around here since March, but I suppose I've also seen quite a few things happen around here and I have befriended some amazingly wonderful and lovely people from here whom I feel as though I could share so much with.

*sighs* I've just read some e-mail messages I sent to this mailing list I used to belong to, just about ten months after I started going online, and trust me, you do not want to read them. No, I'm serious. Best to be blissfully ignorant.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 24 November 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, my first ever AMA post:

From: KtStClaire
Subject: Re: BEST BAND EVER TO BREAK UP
Newsgroups: alt.music.alternative

What, this year alone?
Oh my god! Medicine! Not to mention Ride!
Of the past 10 years? Probably Spacemen 3 get the honours for most
backbiting and sheer number of splinter groups

I only found about a dozen posts on AMA. I was more on rec.music.ambient and the no-fi SP* groups and (oh the shame) the blur group.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

a link from Carsmile Steve's blog to I Love Music brought me here.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, to answer the original question... I followed a link that Ned posted on Star Chamber.

Ironically, I didn't actually know what Freaky Trigger was for the first few months I lurked on then posted to ILM!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

googling... then i ignored it for a year till i started reading penman, then reynolds and marcello (earlier this year), then i lurked fer a while...

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was when someone linked to Tom's Kid A review for Freakytrigger on a thread about online music zines on a long-defunct Interweb message board. Said message board was long past its best and when I saw ILM I was away (this was pre-ILE, I'm pretty sure).

smee (smee), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

All my former Sinister friends started banging on about ILM. Which was then, and is now, a scary, geeky wasteland, but ILE is pretty neat. So I started reading and posting just over 2 years ago. I was smuttier than Dan Perry!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)
