How did you first discover the joys of ILX?

I was googling for info on Sigur Ros and I saw a listing for greenspun on it. I regret that fateful day. Now I can't get any work done.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 September 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

There was an ILE thread on this but I can't find it. For those that came because it was an offshoot of Freaky Trigger

here are some answers.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 September 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember back when there was just ILM. I followed a link to it from Freaky Trigger. Then I found ILE. Then I realised ILE KiXoR ILM's ArSoR.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 9 September 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, because all my grebt chumZ0r from ye pubbe were banging on about it and introducing me to more mentalists. Heh heh. And then I got ye interwebbe @ work and it went from there. Aw. Perhaps.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 September 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Lookin for articles from old Melody Makers and stumbled onto an ILM thread about MM.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 9 September 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 9 September 2002 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoever discovers ILX from a Fiat Uno is a fool i tell you, thats a rub car

I discovered from a link somewhere to I Hate Music. Then i took the hate from the url and found Freaky Trigger

vic (vicc13), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just like Vic: I think some google search revealed a half-sentence of I Hate Music that was clever enough to lure me through the whole site.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

From a link posted by someone on Rose Plaza at the Twee Kitten website to Am I Cool or Not?...Responded to that for a while (as the chat room at tweekitten had fizzled out), then looked at the rest of the Freaky Trigger and then found ILM from that, and then jumped ship to ILE on day one.

i think i worked out finally that it was jyoti on uk.music.alternative pointed me (not personally) to freakytrigger or ILM. didn't get ILM at first, came back some months later, and something clicked/snapped.

Tip-off from donut bitch 'n' Ned on a mailing list

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 9 September 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate The Saint once mentioned FT on her bands mailing list. I made my way here shortly after.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 September 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i think i found joshblog, and then ft from there. or maybe it was a josh post on nylpm. and then i waited round there a little while until someone started ilm.

mitch lastnamewithheld, Monday, 9 September 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

joe shlabotnik. blame ned.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 9 September 2002 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I did a google search on something like "definition of pop music" and found ILM.

DeRayMi, Monday, 9 September 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I started posting in a couple of Yahoo groups earlier this year, and asked my friends if they had any good recommendations. Andrew L said he thought I'd like ILM, and I've been around here ever since.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 9 September 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Its all a blur now, but I do remember finding Cultural Artefacts Of The Moment first (don't remember how), then through CAOTM I found Freaky Trigger, and through FT, I found ILX.

JC (JC A.), Monday, 9 September 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

or ILM as it was then.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 September 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I was looking for bangbus pics.

david h (david h), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course the real answer is "there are 'joys' to be had on ILx?"

david h (david h), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Off of CTCL's website, initially... only started posting after Com introduced me to it, tho.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

it's all hopkins' and welthorpe's fault. "there's this guy called tom just moved to oxford like you" they said, "you should go for a pint" they said. little did i know...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 9 September 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I was googling Bangbus, and ended up here.

This thread has got me thinking. Greenspun threads always used to be near the top of what google returned. But google doesn't have the same hit rate where ILXor is concerned. I'm sure Graham can answer why this is (something to do with plenty of web sites linking to the greenspun.com domain name, but only a few linking to www.ilxor.com??).

So, my question is - is ILXs new-found obscurity a good or a bad thing?

bert, Monday, 9 September 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

My busom buddy Renyolds recommended it.

I stumbled on it, took one look and would have muttered "mentalists!!" had I known the word - bigger fish to fry! - that night I discovered two tiny fang-marks in my shoulder

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Madchen_in_Uniform told me about it on a dark and stormy night, my car's windshield wipers furiously swishing, a gloomy and sinister scene ... um, oh, forget it. Yeah, that's how it went. It was love at first sight.

Will you... muh-muh-muh-marry meee?

mandee, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Charles McPhedran (who says he feels too intimidated to post here!) sent me the link.

OCP, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

For long days, weeks, months, I sought somewhere where I could, in semi-public, disagree with Troussé / Jones / Hopkins / Ewing about the Darling Buds. I spent ages searching the interweb, then came across a thread where they all said things like 'late 80s MM was bad - it had the Darling Buds on the cover!!'.

Here, at last, was my opportunity.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

That Poptones thread is clearly going to be my equivalent of Bowie doing the Nazi salute at Victoria Station in '76.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

it was either the "sasha frere jones: paler shade of white" thread or the original M.I.A. thread. i was amazed at the fact that i was reading a messageboard where the contributors, for the most part, seemed as smart as i was. previously i had only found terrifying ignorance on messageboards but i might not have been looking too hard. i lurked for a long time, and learned a lot of stufff

Aimless, Sunday, 14 April 2013 03:45 (twelve years ago)

wait, sebastien, do you really not know who momus is or was that a joek? i wish momus would resuscitate click opera, his tumblr is bullshit. i don't know what ilx's consensus is but i think click opera is one of the greatest blogs of all time; livejournal was the perfect medium for momus's eclecticism and penchant for often wrong, but almost always brilliant cultural analysis.

buzza: if i am a "sock", which regular poster do you think i am? personally, i think i have a very distinctive voice. i wouldn't mistake myself for anyone.

Yes, Aja was a sock and she brought ilxors a measure of joy. now I understand.

Aimless, Sunday, 14 April 2013 03:59 (twelve years ago)

on this board i feel like i am always on the run from buzza, who is lurking around every corner, ready to jump out and accuse me of being a "sock." he is my quilty, my shadow, my conscience. i am who i say i am though, check my twitter account which is @iwouldprefernot and also search for the book reviews i write for the tottenville review. i am a dude whose name is pat finn and i have never posted here under any other name.

I was GISing the phrase 'take no shit' and found an ILX FAP thread.

Will you see a political publicity stunt? (snoball), Sunday, 14 April 2013 07:44 (twelve years ago)

I came over in 2002 because someone was impersonating me on ILM, and even though nobody knew who I was I felt like I needed to set the record straight. A year later, I switched from my real name to Johnny Fever and I've been gumming up the works since.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 14 April 2013 07:52 (twelve years ago)

What About The Half That's Never Been POLLed (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 14 April 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)

For the uninitiated, this message board can be an uninviting place. Threads are often filled with obscure Web slang, vicious flaming, and know-it-all 'tude. But it's also an amazing place to learn about music, both new and old. Fierce debate takes up the bulk of the bandwidth, often leading to some of the most intelligent music talk around (many posters are music critics). Last year's long-running thread on Sri Lanka-born rapper M.I.A., to pick one example, was worthy of a grad-school seminar.

Mordy, Sunday, 14 April 2013 15:24 (twelve years ago)

There are also poop jokes.

Will you see a political publicity stunt? (snoball), Sunday, 14 April 2013 15:27 (twelve years ago)

the M.I.A. thread was like a goldmine when I discovered it. this site was everything I had wanted the internet to be: a place for fierce yet reasoned debate, intelligent analysis, and momus. i was too intimidated to contribute to it when i first found it, but i lurked for a long time on ilm mostly, and i think the archives here might be the BEST possible way to learn about music.

Pat Finn, Sunday, 14 April 2013 15:29 (twelve years ago)

PF: Tom Ewing.

I discovered ILE via the connection to Freaky Trigger and Tom E, who was a member of Frank's APA for a while in the mid/late 90s. (I'm still technically a Frank's member, though I haven't contributed in a criminally long time.)

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Saturday, 17 August 2013 12:51 (twelve years ago)

Followed a link from Daphne Carr's old Best Music Writing page in 2010 or so. Shyly lurked for a bit, particularly because I found the wealth of activity on the board so intimidating. Eventually started checking out ILE as well, and was particularly impressed with the gay threads since they seemed to talk about classic film and poetry and other cool stuff instead of the usual bullshit. Finally got up the nerve to start posting there a year-ish ago, and from there began participating in other convos as well. I felt like I hit a kind of personal ILX milestone earlier is year when I finally participated in my first ILM artist poll (Madonna).

Nowadays I quote you guys fairly regularly in irl conversations with friends, which I'm sure seems kinda weird to some, but what can I say, you guys are very quotable!

I was introduced to the board in 2005 by a user I will not name, started posting in 2006, but didn't become fully active until 2008 or so when I stopped posting on Hipinion and my local board Stillepost went kaput. I've been posting on message boards since I was 10 and the atmosphere had always been unbridled positivity; it took me a few years of tentative toe-dipping to adjust my expectations :) Hi folks! :) I like u
