On this thread, Popshots enigmatically lets fall that he doesn't know what to think about the Red Sox these days. Here's where I ask him what he meant. And, because I am a pre-emptive ass, I will suggest that if his ambivalence is a result of the Red Sox's recent profligacy re: mega-stars, he should remember that the Sox have always been big spenders, that Jim Rice was at one time the highest-paid player in the game ($2M per year), which only points up the REAL difference between these Sox and those: John Henry and Epstein still spend money like it's water but on - gasp - players who are actually worth it.

THe lack of news today is making my head explode.

i think the bosox have made much smarter moves than the yanquis in this arms race. i gotta figure at this point some sort of deal happens with manny-arod, if only cuz of the nomar factor. it'd be nice to see the cubs sign maddux, for sentimentality's sake, but also cuz he'd be a great change of pace pitcher for them and a really good influence/mentor for prior and wood. it isn't like they'd have to break the bank for them either, odds are he's gonna sign with san diego and he's hardly the 'big name' free agent the padres are supposedly gonna sign this offseason.

also: pettite's an astro, colon signs with the angels, yanks resign david wells - good days for yankee haters

haha Pettite's always belonged on a Texas team, he's horsey and he loooooves God

big question for Sox, IF the deals of their dreams all happen: who plays left? it's odd that they might be leaving their traditional marquee position (teddy ballgame, yaz, rice, manny) so up-in-the-air - on the other hand, curse-breaking means throwing the rule-book out the window

did I mention that my head is exploding? frankly i would feel JUST FINE if ver Sox stand pat; i don't know why they've been so public with the A-Rod stuff. the team as-is is phenomenal. add Foulke and they're 110-game winners.

Sheffield is the perfect Yankee. What a dick.

Sox fans should worry about Pedro/Curt arm problems.

Schilling HELPS w/the Sox's arm problems (= Martinez), he's a horse!! (and somewhat horsey but i don't think he looooves god as much as that crybaby pettite) Deek lowe, schilling, and wakefield can each pitch lots of innings, so now they can rest Pedro more. that's why they got him!

yeah, until pettite and colon (who i know at least i assumed the yanks would go after hard) signed elsewhere and they resigned wells (who i thought was a goner after helping them lose the series last year), i thought the yanks were getting better. i think they did a nice job improving their middle relief, pity about that starting rotation though.
