so, there apparently isn't much going on in this city unless you are SO SMOOTH AND GOING TO BARCA or SO GOTH AND GOING TO THAT PLACE UNDER THE AUTO-BATTERY STORE... and i'm waiting for my boss to email me back to see if i have to go to that stupid fucking suburb and meet him tomorrow and listen to him talk for 4 hours about NOTHING.

I've been here since June and I'm wondering what the fuck. What is the story? Am I missing something?

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It takes a while to figger this palce out, I agree to that. And people are not exactly "friendly" here, and don't get me started on the inability of anyone to drive remotely well. But I think there's a shitload of rad stuff going on --

For instance tonight, Alan from the Sun City Girls showed stuff from his amazing new DVD "Folk Music of the Sahara: Among the Tuareg" over at the Rendezvous in Belltown.

Tomorrow there's a rad free show 6 p.m. at 2nd Ave. Pizza with Odessa and Steve Fisk and later on The Lights (Gun Club + The Clean X The Urinals) are playing at the Showbox opening for someone, I forget who but the Lights are one of many many fabulous bands in town, the best of course being the A-FRAMES who are so good it makes me cry. Well, not really; I only cry at bad movies.

Of course I have no idea what kinda stuff you are interested in, and maybe you would hate these events of which I speak.

The ConWorks "Heaven/ Hell" ball on New Years looks to be fun (Lifesavas, Decemberists), but then I am DJ'ing it, and I've found a way to mix the Shaggs and Outkast together which will likely be horrible, so maybe you shouldn't go to it.

Anyway. Email me if you want to meet up at a show or for coffee or something.

Yes, I said coffee. I am afraid I've become very Seattle after 5 years in this place.

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ok so shaggs+outkast and decemberists... that sounds pretty interesting actually.

and there is NOTHING WRONG with drinking coffee, as long as you are not drinking bad coffee. which is rampant and horrible up here.

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

HUH? In Seattle, bad coffee?
Dude, best coffee I've ever had is here, but then I've never been to Italy or anything.
You should only go to VIVACE, my friend, on Capitol Hill -- two locations, for some reason the outdoor stand is always just a little bit better I think bceause they have to prepare it more quickly. If you like sweet coffee, get a tall caramel at Vivace, and see if you don't need it daily.
I also like the DIVA mini-chain up north (who use Vivace beans and train from the same method), and VITTA is pretty darn good, too (their roast is sweeter, and lots of places use their beans).
For late-night action, BAUHAUS on the Hill is rad for sure -- they are open until 1 a.m. and stop making fancy drinks at 12:30 p.m., every night. The baristas are ultra-cute, as well, which never hurts...
I think the ConWorks website is conworks.org, FYI.
Ohhh, and welcome -- to Seattle. (I just basically joined this board today myself -- I think I posted a few things a year or so ago, but I was too busy to really check it out. Ummm, now I'm not.)

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

bauhaus is my favorite coffee shop ever. but the percentage of good coffee to bad coffee is not good. it's a matter of sheer numbers. and i live on the hill.

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

have you tried vivace???

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yes vivace is great, but better than the coffee is sitting there waiting for Link & his dad to walk by, it's so entertaining

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.notoart.com/joker.JPG

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this must be the most exciting fucking thread, ever.

ummmmmmmm, "link"?

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, you know, from Legend of Zelda and all that. He has a sword and shield and fanny pack and green felt tunic and walks up and down broadway with what I assume to be his dad, and they constantly loudly argue about traffic laws and shit like that. good times, good times!

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

that's how exciting my time has been up here. watching link.

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"legend of zelda"??? sorry, you lost me.

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what, no nintendo for you? he's like this + 200 pounds:

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Where the hell did all you fuckers come from? The esteemed Ned Raggett will be in town this coming Friday and Saturday, and we're all going to get together to get some fondue at the Melting Pot in lower Queen Anne... how's about it.

YETI MIKE! WE, LIKE, JUST FRIENDSTERED EACH OTHER. I MET YOU THROUGH MATOS AT THAT SUN CITY GIRLS SHOW IN TACOMA. YOU'RE FOLLOWING ME, AREN'T YOU?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned is.. well Ned.. as you'll soon see.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the story on Ned's visit this weekend.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

And we all know life in Seattle is all about geeking it out in Fremont, where you can be tempted to buy hugely priced collectible records at Jive Time and then eat impulse conveyer belt sushi, then wash it down with something from the godlike PCC bakery.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, i'm so atari 2600!! nintendo? sorry. my family had pong...

mr. bitch -- hey! it is amazing how the internet, and the sun city girls, do bring us all together. it's not called following it's actually more like stalking. that sound outside your window is me typing this on a laptop.

*sigh* those my little pony underoos you have on are fucking ADORABLE!

a'ight -- insert emoticon smiley face here.

fondue? cool. which night is it? i think i have a date one of the nights but will try to shuffle? [say -- you wouldn't be into changing plans and going to maneki, would you??? i bet we could get a tatami room there... just curious. it's probbaly my favorite restaurant, next to matt's, so i'm always bugging folks to go there. okay i'll shut up now.]

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

agh, i am 2600+nintendo until i DIE, those playstation jerks can GO TO HELL.

anyway, if someone would want to email me about this i would gladly meet up. need to meet more people in this town (evidenced by the low-quality but still earnest hermit thread)

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god please will someone take a picture of Link and post it here???

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll try, i've got a fancy camera-phone now... he really is ridiculous, like the Portland Elvis.

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of elvis, have you ridden in the elvis cab yet?

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

nope. what's the story with that?

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

he took me to the hospital once! i just called red cab to go there for a minor thing and this dude driving the cab was dressed like elvis -- it was pretty cool. anyway he was totally in the news a lot of late due the ordinance that was passed for him -- read about it here:

http://www.cab-elvis.com/

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

So yeah, join us on Saturday or something. There is always room for more. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike, what's the Tatami room? Is it anything like Ohana's in belltown, the Hawaiian/massive tiki drink place?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Because, while part of my heart is set on fondue, I had only recently found out the Melting Pot is a national chain that Ned has ready access to back in his home turf in the O.C., but a place that could be... well, something more unique and hopefully as accessible for those of us who don't drive (at least these days) is very welcome as last minute suggestions. :) (Keep in mind I'm a vegetarian, so wherever we go must have at least one vegetarian item for munching)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

my suggestion for washington state is getting the fuck out as soon as you can.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

[pizzadog:] I've been here since June and I'm wondering what the fuck. What is the story? Am I missing something?

[yetimike:] It takes a while to figger this palce out, I agree to that. And people are not exactly "friendly" here, and don't get me started on the inability of anyone to drive remotely well. But I think there's a shitload of rad stuff going on --

Haha, I read "here" as ILX and thought "WTF?"

OleM (OleM), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

SO GOTH AND GOING TO THAT PLACE UNDER THE AUTO-BATTERY STORE

best phrase ever!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

And just for the sake of showing off our new guy, yetimike is responsible for this thing:

http://www.koly.com/stereolab/discog/images/81.jpg

and other issues... A little more on the story as described here in a great comprehensible unofficial Stereolab website page here.

(mike, is there an official website for YETI? I tried google and no luck)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

jessington, i could see your point regarding needing to get the fuck out of a certain region of washington state at the bottom of the sound... but, come one, now.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

pizzadog, you're more then welcome to join us on saturday, wherever we end up. Once you meet Ned, you will never forget Ned. He is much like.. well, a yeti! but a kind, benelovent and very sassy yeti.

(donutbitch, pizzadog, yetimike, i sense a pattern...)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, are any of you going to the Pinback show tonight at the showbox? I will be there, so if you are too, we should chat.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Seattle does have tons of crap coffee-- especially Tullys, yech. Bauhaus is SO poserish, especially out on the summer sidewalk sofas. Then again, my new favorite place is the new Top Pot on 5th, so what am I talking about.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

how did I miss this one? yeah, I'm out of town for Xmas week but when I get back I'm pretty much always down for stuff. go ahead and email me if you want. and lyra, we live two blocks from each other yet I haven't seen you in ages, wtf?! we must have coffee (at top pot, haven't been there yet)!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and yetimike is top notch

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

oh crap, i went to a show/auction at the Rebar a month or two ago that had something to do with the yeti magazine. i was watching my friends The Dead Science play a show... uhh, yeah i thought i knew that name from somewhere

pizzadog, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

damn it! i thought the pinback show was wed. not tue.

argh, bad mental calendar! must find new one!

pizzadog, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

and yeah, i don't give a shit about the poser-ish morons that fill up the bauhaus, i just like it as a building and they have good coffee. i still have the "i come from portland" mindset so my judgement might be poor. someone lead me to the proper areas for maximum enjoyment!

pizzadog, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna hear more about the auto battery goth club.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

well apparently it's some sort of invite-only all-night CRAZY PARTY!!! Under the store whose sign reads "AUTO BATTERY" and nothing more. I know nothing in terms of detail since i've never been Invited. you can hear the "boom WHRRR chk boom WRRR chk" club-style industro/gothic garbage streaming out of there as you walk by, and see the made-up too-fat and too-skinny vinyl-n-leather folks standing outside with cigarettes dangling from the chains attached to their wrists or whatever.

Actually, I was walking by there the other night talking with my roommate about these people that i never want to see again, and as we walk by the little driveway thing, WHAT DO YOU KNOW but these same people come walking out of the club. One of them gave me a hug but I was so stoned i was unable to say a single word during the whole awkward exchange. Subtext was like this: "So great to see you! Even better to see you LEAVE!" My roommate on the other hand ran his mouth for like 20 minutes to these fools, after which we hurried home in the freezing cold and proceeded to guzzle booze until it was sleep time.

pizzadog, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

well dear fucking god... Barca may have a nice beer selection or what not, but I've heard nothing about that being a good place to meet people or anything... i think even people that are Cha Cha regulars think Barca is too stuffy, and that's saying something. That said, I went to a birthday party there, and we all got drunk and annoyed the fuck out of everybody there, which made it fun -- but just once. (I did something similar at the Cha Cha two birthdays ago, we all went there just to get drunk and annoy the regulars. That was the last time I was there. my friends and i are fucking assholes, aren't we)

re: Dead Science. Hey, I saw those guys play at this 28 band Beatles tribute show at the Re-bar this past summer which was a benefit for the move for Confounded Books and Wall Of Sound Records (which I think was partially organized by Rick Bishop of the Girls, so all goodness ALWAYS comes back to the Sun City Girls here). They played toward the very end. They were all very tall, dark, harrowing, and had a damaged bassy sound. I kinda dug em.

Bauhaus Coffee on the other hand is an OK place by me. The building is indeed great, especially the upstairs, where you can still witness Magic: The Gathering competitions. (this may be a good or bad thing for you) Actually, last time Ned was here, memorial day weekend, we all had a big FAP/gettogether outside the place. A) They have the best coffee in town no doubt, and B) that corner of Melrose & Pine is THEE best people watching corner in town on a Saturday night. Just ask the dude with the headphones that was figuratively stomping on Clinton and Bush's face in front of us there. Ask the older vaudeville red nosed drunk dude with a jug in his jacket staring at Ronny the entire time. Just ask the seven foot tall rail-thin Euro dude with two dollies on either side of him pumping his fist to handbag house music in his little convertible.

I won't defend Capitol Hill, generally... aside from the Elysian Brewery, Bauhaus, Zion's Gate records, and seeing shows there. Ok, there are a few other good places too. But generally, I shy away from the Hill. That's why I live in Fremont. I'd rather deal with people into hemp candles, antiques, and collectible records than people that jumped out of a Hipster Bingo board.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hipster bingo kidney fun

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

and db's friends are awesome.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did you leave Portland for Seattle?

Casuistry, posting the most predictable thing he'll post all week (Chris Piuma), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pondering!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

MMmmm, doughnuts! I have had no life in months since Xmas starts in August for us & continues for months of 14 hour days-- I got home at 8 PM tonight, and that was early. :-P (OK, although I did take 4 hours off in the afternoon to go see ROTK)

I like Belltown- it feels like NJ in a great many ways. But all around, Seattle is not a good place to make friends.

ps- "people who jumped out of a hipster bingo board" is my most favorite description EVAH

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 18 December 2003 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

don't get me started on the days I've been working (and am right now--hi, office!)

but yeah, we should have doughnuts after new year's.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

At least you're missing the downtown holiday traffic!!! 5th and 4th have been SWAMPED with suburban drivers trying to hit Nordstrom & Pacific Place, doing 15 mph, turning the wrong way, turning out of center lanes, panicking when you honk at them, and generally making a mess. I'm glad they rarely venture over onto 3rd, so the traffic moves on that one. so far. ;-)

Seriously, we timed 6th from University -> Olive at 2 PM today, it took 15 minutes!

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i came here from portland because i grew up there and had to get the fuck out, but was basically too lazy to do much about it for a long time, hence just coming up here vs. going across the country or something. Also i needed a job, and portland had none. 206 had 1 or 2.

ugh, i wanted a beer tonight and thought "oh, Comet, okay" but my friend refuses to go anywhere that is doing karaoke, so he dragged me to Barca. More like Barfa (i know, har-d-har-har). There were many cute girls, true, but they had the unsurprising "don't talk to me jackass" vibe. i would like to hope that i never have to go in there again.

Also, i saw Return of the King tonight. fine movie!

pizzadog, Thursday, 18 December 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

tangent --> hey, donut bitch, where did wall of sound and confounded move to?

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 18 December 2003 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

they're on Capitol Hill now, on the same block (Pine & Melrose) as Bauhaus

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 18 December 2003 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, i think that perhaps i havent been to seattle since last year.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 18 December 2003 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well -- HEY! i don't know how the fuck i missed this thread the last 2 days but it looks like i did, somehow!!!

Ned: I's love to meet you but Sat. night is tough for me, since I have to do a favor with a friend early eve., then go to the Detroit Cobras show which is a date... But I might be able to swing by and meet you guys for dinner, or if you are willign to eat late, like 9:00, I could meet for dinner for sure.

Alternate brunch proposal for all: Any chance we could meet up for brunch, Sat. or Sunday? My favorite place on the hill is 611 Supreme -- will this work for anyone? I'll actually check back om this thread.

Matos: Awesome? Awww shucks, you make me blush. Esp. since you rule yourself and are such a major playah in the ILX realm...

Pizza: I missed the Pinback show too (heard it was awesome) in order to go to two different shows to see friends' bands (who were not awesome, plus I missed the Steve Fisk part which I'm sure ruled...)

Donut: Ummmm, the YETI website is kind of not working now but it's nobrow.org/yeti -- it's sopooo hard to work for others on the internet for so long then do your own website, I've found I just don't have the energy! The restaurant I mentioned was MANEKI -- they have tatami rooms but for 4 people a table will work just fine you know? It's my favorite restaurant, overall -- cheap, excellent, cute waitstaff. http://www.nwsource.com/ae/scr/nws_vd.cfm?c=r&id=6010

All in Seattle: I am DJ'ing (mostly punk rock, gospel and really bad X-mas music) at the Three Imaginary Girls party this Sunday -- I might have guest list-age if you want to come lemme know -- threeimaginarygirls.com -- buncha local indie bands doing X-mas songs, etc.

Fuck, that was a long-ass post!!!

Wait, do you all not swear on here on purpose? I've noticed like no one else cusses. Maybe you are just house-trained...

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That should be *I'D* love to meet you -- willinG to eat late...

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

XPOST to Pizzadog, i don't think Seattle is particularly more difficult to make friends than in any other town, although it is a bit more on the insular side. It's just that bars, which generally are considered friend-making devices, don't really, um, do that job here necessarily -- especially in Capitol Hill, which most city dwellers here treat as the a miniature Manhattan. The "mid size city that acts like a big city" factor also applies to all of the above. I haven't really frequented a bar in town on my own as long as I remember, and feel like I've wasted no time for it... So, yeah, I won't deny that, say, Portland is an easier place to make friends than Seattle...(although I've spent many lonely weekends in Portland, too)

It's really in the Seattle retail community here where you make friends. Not that I advocate stalking or crushing on check-out girls or boys or anything, nor do I advocate being guilt-ridden into buying stuff just to make friends.... but i always get greeted, surprisingly, by people walking by the street saying "hey, you're the guy that walked into my store the other day". So, people are friendly here, just not in the conventional places... and least friendly on the Hill, from my experience.

Mike, lots of ideas to ponder tomorrow, lots of them. And hell yeah, I'm pretty sure we will be fondueing it well after 9pm if there's a sustainable crowd of folks who want to chat. but don't ruin your date for us. :) there will be other opportunities, surely (though possibly Nedless)

Pinback show was great. The audience was filled with Canadians. (this was their most northern show in the U.S., Vancouver is just three hours north, doink) I can just smell them.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, Manhattan is WAY friendlier and more open than Capitol Hill is.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post to Lyra: One word, VIVACE!!! I've yet to go to the new Top Pot, though I hear it's a great-looking space. I like their neon...

Bauhaus to me is just so silly but I go there a lot since I dated one of the baristas briefly and am friends with the people who work there, so I get the hook-up.

Once I staretd to not have to pay for coffee at my favorite places I just felt like 'OK, I'm never moving anywhere else, again.' I am such a dork that this is the greatest measure of happiness in my life!

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, Manhattan is WAY friendlier and more open than Capitol Hill is.

I should clarify: "which most city dwellers here treat as what they think is is a miniature Manhattan"

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

X-post to Matos: OTM on Manhattan vs. Cap Hill.

I just figure those little kids on the hill are sooooooo scared, and that's why they act like little poseur-y jerks with their slant-y haircuts and etc. I find the whole thing funny. I try to treat people nicely even if they don't treat me that way at first, and I get surprisingly good results back from people that way.

But Christ, how I wish we had ONE decent art space -- there's a couple good galleries (Greg Kucera, that one right next to 2nd Ave. Pizza) but if we had anythign like the Walker Arts Center here, ohmygod I'd be so much happier here!!!

I've lived all over the east coast -- Miami, Chattanooga, NYC area, Cleveland -- and nowhere I've been is as weirdly repressed and uptight as this place. The best thing about it, aside from free coffee(!), is the abundance of rad, cute, strong, artsy & cool women. It's by far the best place I've ever been single, even though I might be about to be not-single, which is fine by me as well...

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

X-POST to Donut: Filled? I heard the Showbox was mildly cavernous last night. And I think you're OTM on the bars vs. stores thing, though I hardly even go to bars since I'm sober and stuff.

I'll totally at least drop by the fondue on Sat.

Any ideas on the viability of brunch, though? We could move it if folks don't dig 611 (it's a crepe joint on Pine, across the street from Rudy's).

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

One idea was to go to Tom Thai in the U-district for an early lunch, which is probably the best Thai place in town, but I'm open to new places too. Is 611 Supreme the crepes place?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Duh, you just said it. Yes, I've been there. In fact, Ned, myself, and a few Portlanders had brunch there once with a character named.. um, Big Gay Sean.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post -- i'll get rid of my "did you even READ my comment **sniffle**" line and say yeah -- I think 611 is really good, affordable, and of course I am pals with the waitstaff and barista there. [Christ, I never even KNEW THE WORD barista until I moved here.]

So, Thai on Sunday or 611? Just so long as I can sleep in....

This isn't BigDirtySean from Portland, is it???

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

and just further x-post, if one is a type of person that can't say no to really bad drugs, Seattle is a really bad city to be in. People here are surprisingly generous with the most astoundingly bad chemicals you can imagine, whereas from my experiences in L.A. and O.C. and San Diego, you had to be several tiers "cooler" to be invited to share the "stuff". Not that I would ever care for that, thankfully, so personally, it's a moot issue... but, I thought I'd bring it up because I think that's another factor in the perceived lack of friendliness in town.

mike: I was actually thinking of the Thai thing on Saturday. i have to run a shopping errand early on Saturday, and surely houseguest Ned will happily sleep in, so I doubt anything will be commencing until around early afternoon anyway. Ned might have to be on his way back to Sea-tac by Sunday morning... or not. Who knows. But if there is time, I'd happily join you at 611 on Sunday, and anyone else for that matter.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And no, it's definitely Big Gay Sean from Seattle Who I Think Is Now In San Francisco. That's too bad if he moved. Big Gay Sean and Big Dirty Sean surely would have had Big Dirty Gay Fun.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

and that brings us (well, a couple posts back) to what I luh most about Seattle: THAI FOOD. is there a BAD Thai place in town? because if there is, I haven't eaten there yet. [please note I do not necessarily have the most discerning palate, esp. when it comes to Thai, which I am the world's biggest sucker for]

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Thai food is always at-least-good in Seattle, yes yes yes.

Same with all Ethiopian places except the one across the street from Twice Sold Tales on the hill. I LOVE Ethiopian food...

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep reading this incomprehensible thread just waiting for a picture of link!

Ethiopian food is k-odd - I think I do not like the flatbread which is a chiz as theoretically all bread = my hearts desire.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

K-odd???

I love that injera bread, though I guess it tastes 'sour' to some.

You'll have to bug pizza-man for the picture. I still don't know what the fuck he was on about there, myself.

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"k" as prefix = very, extremely. literally x1000, like the k in kg or km.

oh gawd, i have been having problems with the god-damn thai food scene around here... there is THAI TOM'S (which is admittedly worth it, best thai i've had here) but i don't like to make a trip just to eat some food. I feel weird when i go to a thai place that's supposed to be really good and they have, for instance, only one kind of curry. what the fuck!?! How is that good? Yeah I'm talking to YOU, Places On 15th Ave. Anyway, where else do you guys like? as far as like vietnamese and other asian-type cuisines, i've found some great places. i really like Ballet for instance. cheap as hell and mighty tasty.

and it's not that i really go to bars to meet girls or find friends or whatever, i am just a Drinking Fan in general. i've met some really cool people while i'm out, but i'm so awkwardly lousy with the girl thing that it doesn't even really enter my mind in a realistic way.

i don't think i fit into the CAP HILL KIDS scene or whatever is rumored to be going on here. I agree there is an overflow of morons up here, but i'm starting to think that's just general Seattle demographic. i got a place on the hill because it's not as retarded as downtown, yet still pretty central. then i got a job where i don't actually have to go to an office for once in my life, and suddenly the desire to be centrally located seems irrelevant. but i'm here and it's okay.

pizzadog, Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

honestly i haven't seen Link in the past few days, which i guess can be explained by me not leaving the house much. but according to my friends he hasn't been around, so maybe he went into hibernation or something.

pizzadog, Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

PIZZA: Don't eat in the U-District, or on 15th st. (though that bakery next to Sonic Boom is rad) if you can stand it.

I'm a broke-ass-but-eat-out-all-the-damn-time guy myself so tell me -- what food do you want to eat, and where, and what price range, and I'll make suggestions.

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

there will be other opportunities, surely (though possibly Nedless)

THEN WHY BOTHER? Oh wait, that's rude.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll respectfully disagree with Mike in that I think there are a number of underrated places in the U-district, but it helps if you're vegan. There's the amazing Hillside Quickies (Brooklyn & 41st?) which is a Jamaican vegan sandwich shop that serves thee best hot vegan food ever, and even hushpuppies to boot. And there's the not-as-spectacular-but-still-neat Pizza Pi, which is a vegan pizzaria. And Tom Thai is worth the visit there too. There was also a kick-ass Himalayan place there... U-district in general reminds me of Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley, or half of S.F. as far as food quality/convenience.. all of it is alright because it's just a block away from you, but nothing worth that extra nudge of travel for, excepting Tom Thai and Hillside Quickies. (again, some may disagree)

I'm more of a Thai snob than Matos is. There are tons of thai places in Fremont for instance, but only one, IMHO, is worth any trip and that's Tawon Thai, between Sonic Boom records and the Greek restaurant. I'll just say this: Deep fried Banana fritters and black sesame ice cream. Then again, I like the more American fast food Thai they serve at Mae Pham in Pioneer Square, so I might not be the best judge.

And maybe because I'm a sucker for conveyer belts and impulse sushi, but that new "boat" sushi place in Fremont called Blue C Sushi is definitely worth a visit, but it's become a third home to me just for the convenience. (Second home is jive time records)

P-dog, you may not be vegan, but could you stand it in the honor of an excellent brunch? If so, The Globe on Pine & 14th is absolutely great. You will probably see many of the Cap Hill Kids you hate there, but once you get your huge fucking plate of grilled tofu fajitas for a decent price, ($7 or so, which isn't dirt cheap, but you get huge amounts), you'll forget all about your neighbors.

As for PIZZA, Pizzadog, again it's not cheap, but if you ever want to dive deep into rich cheesy pizza goodness, make the trip to the Wallingford Pizza House in Wallingford. Great deep dish chicago style pizza there, and a really neat building to boot.

Hi Ned! We need to get the balls rolling. *obvious set up for Dan Perry rejoinder*

About Tom Thai, according to the guy who works there, people in Thailand know about this place. That's a pretty good recommendation on its own.

Hi Ned! We need to get the balls rolling. *obvious set up for Dan Perry rejoinder*

WAH.

Will call you tonight. I am looking forward to this Thai deal very much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there's a chance it may be inconvenient, the place is about as big as a portable outlet, and has been known to have an hour long waiting list at certain times. But I think that's more the dinner rush. They open at noon on Saturday, I THINK, so probably best thing is to just go there not too long after they open.

i bought a pound of vivace's "vita blend" specifically to ease my transition from seattle to st louis.

and yes, it takes forever to meet people in seattle. i knew the indiepages/copacetic zine crowd from before moving to town, as well as yetimike. and i met some nice people through volunteering at vera, but seeing as how i'm about 10 years older than the average vera member, didn't make too many lasting friendships...

i miss the place.

restaurants: i really liked taqueria express on cap hill (in that indoor mall on broadway near olive), panini grill and i (heart) bento in my old nabe of ravenna. there were a few thai places in cap hill i liked. come to think of it, i didn't really go out for meals that much. coffee: generally i was ok with just going to tully's if i needed a caffeine fix, but had a soft spot for vivace. (it was recommended to me when i first moved to town as the best - which is correct.)

The Malaysian place on 12th a block north from Jackson is awesome- I love their mango curry. Also Seattle Deli across the street, as I think it's called has tasty, cheap take out vietnamese. I wish we had more good Indian food- the eastside wins out there (mmmm, crossroads mall food court!) and India Bistro in Ballard is yummy, if expensive, but that's about it. I'm spoiled from living in Cambridge's Central Sq, roll out of bed & have a lunch of heavenly Indian.

I like the Green Cat on Olive on Cap Hill, but I haven't been to many other places around there. If you want Belltown recommendations, Marco's Supper Club, Palace Kitchen and Shallots are my favorites, & then we have Biofournil (teensy French Bakery) and Macrina (great muffins & pastries) which are both excellent.

Anyway, most of my swearing is when driving- you can ask Matos how I am with local drivers.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

seattle = the only place where i've ever been hit & run while driving.

i still say boston's a worse place to drive, though.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(although I've spent many lonely weekends in Portland, too)

Only because you never call! (And one weekend I was out of town, sorry.)

I can't believe you mentioned Big Gay Sean on ILX! Anyway, based on his friendster profile (http://www.friendster.com/user.jsp?id=1278606, OMG Ned I can't believe you wrote him a testimonial, you are hysterical) he's still in Seattle, which I think is true. So. He's easy to track down!

does major grubert/grandin still post/lurk here?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

As to brunch on Sunday -- 611 is open earlier than 12 but I prefer not to eat sooner than that myself, esp. since I'm up in Greenwood...

I can get us on the waiting list ahead of time if you all can get me a # of folks, too...

And greetings to Mike A !!!

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike, P-dog, GO HERE FOR THE 411, SCROLL TO BOTTOM
