A friend of mine is planning to visit New York quite soon, but on a v.tight budget, and needs pointers abt supercheap hotels and similar places to stay in Manhattan which are (her words) "nice, non-sleazy, non-dangerous" etc

Well that's the Bowery out then.

Hotels in NYC?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe your friend could get in touch with Ally, who knows a thing or two about NY hotels?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

n that is a help obv but actual personal recommendations are also what she's after i think - like "yes it looks grebt in the brochure but oh! the slugs!" is to the point

mark s (mark s), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

B-but - there are personal recommendations. Like the Gershwin.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Gershwin has gotten pricier, IIRC. Worth a look though. No slugs and extremely cheap beer in the bar downstairs.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

we're staying in the Moderne for the wedding, it's not *that* cheap but seems decent

chris (chris), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Banana Bungalow on Broadway is a slightly scuzzy, but not sleazy or dangerous hostel. Prob. not what she's looking for if she wants her own room, though there is a hotel beneath it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Belleclaire is not too bad, it looks really nice on the web-site http://hotelbelleclairenewyork.com/, it's a lot more threadbare irl, but is still clean and good value. It's a little out of the way, being on broadway and 97th st east (I think) but is close to subways, and I never felt unsafe wandering around the area. It's very close to the natural history museum, and central park, and there are lots of fantastic mini-supermarkets and delis, and full size fridges in the rooms, so you can eat in easily and save money on food and drink.

It was very good value when I stayed, as there were 4 of us and we stayed in a family room, which meant 2 double beds, with a 3/4 wall seperating the "rooms" and 1 bathroom, so I don't know what it would be like for a single.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely check out the gershwin, and the holiday inn on chrystie and houston. i stayed at the latter for a few nights about a year and a half ago while some work was being done at my apt., and it was fine. small rooms, but large bathrooms and everything was new and you're in a good position between the east village, lower east side, chinatown, nolita, etc.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

also try hotel 17, which is on east 17th street & 2nd avenue i think. very basic, but again a good location and quite cheap. amanda lepore lives there.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, belleclaire is on West 77th St, on the corner of broadway.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

tell her to do what i did in tokyo. go to some bar, find a reasonably attractive guy to go home and shack up with for a week. oh the money i saved!

or hotel 17 sounds alright. if its good enough for amanda lepore, its surely good enough for the rest of us. but if shes on a very very very very tight budget, there's always that Chelsea Hostel.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaah, the Chelsea Hostel. Squished roaches on the wall and some Aussies wanting to beat up a young Chuck Tatum and myself because they decided we were "fags". Memories...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

one thing i forgot to mention is that single travellers at hotel 17 can get tiny, closet-like rooms without cable or a/c for a really low rate. if your friend is coming on her own, will be spending a lot of time out of the room, and doesn't care about tv then this might be a good way to go.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

some Aussies wanting to beat up a young Chuck Tatum and myself because they decided we were "fags".

Haha! Didn't they realize what neighborhood they were in?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Allyzay, Monday, 12 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Hotel 17 have a website, or did I miss it through skimming the thread, or is their cost margain too small to allow for a website?

the river fleet, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Washington Square Hotel (formerly the Hotel Earle; see Speed, by Wm. Burroughs jr.). Bare-bones and reasonable.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d292140-Reviews-Sohotel-New_York_City_New_York.html

I first stayed at the Sohotel before Chinatown started gentrifying (when it was known as the Pioneer Hotel); absolutely zero frills but I never felt unsafe.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I once tried to "make it" with a guy who was staying in the Hotel 17!

But apparently I misread him, and he was really hoping to "make it" with some other guy.

Either way, he turend out to be crazy, it was just as well.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Hotel 17 have a website

i've never seen one, but if you google it then you'll get linked to info via various online hotel discounters.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

New York City continues to thrive with hotel deals galore

tweemu (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone actually stayed at the Hotel 17?

Cause I'm trying to book reservations. The Gershwin is $99 a night, and Hotel 17 is, like $60 a night, which means I can afford to stay 2 nights in NYC, and I might get to actually see some people! However, my mum has decided that H17 looks dodgy. I know that the Gershwin is fine, I've stayed there several times before. I don't care about size of rooms or television or anything, but I do care that I won't be threatened or burgled or anything.

the river fleet, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it's GOOD dodgy, kate!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, supposedly a Dandy Warhols video was filmed there, so I'm thinking if the place is filled with Dirty Dronerock Boys... erm... HSA might have a problem with that, though!

the river fleet, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

kate, my two best english pals stayed at hotel 17 for almost 3 weeks the last time they were here (my rathole is too small for guests). it's not deluxe, but it's safe and well-located.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Safe and well located sounds good. Especially if it means I can spend a whole weekend in NYC as opposed to one day.

the river fleet, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Woo hoo!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

is hotel 17 that really weird looking place with the walls painted like smurfs on acid?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

do you lot know anything about the moderne, on west 55th street (or maybe 54th I can't remember)
