I Fucking Hate Religion

I was looking on the GOTHICK FOR LIFE thread which has a pretty damn funny parody of a Jack Chick tract, and decided to go on the link to Chick's website. I looked at the "information" section where he has little essays and articles about rival religions and sects (rival to fundamenatalist/evangelical Christianity anyway). As someone who was raised Catholic (though is no longer at all religious), I was curious to see what Mr. Chick had to say about Catholicism. Of course it was nothing but the standard fundamentalist Prostestant argument that Catholics aren't real Christians, the Bible is the true authority, not the pope etc. Suddenly I was reminded of when I moved down to South Carolina (Southern Baptist territory) 11 years ago when I was ten. Whenever I was asked what my religion was (or "What church do you go to?"), I told them Catholic. They would ask, "So you worship Mary?" or "You don't believe in Jesus?" I would try to explain to them about my religion but it didn't seem to sink in. This started to wear on me after a while, and after being continually embarrassed for being Catholic and hearing all the ignorant shit these people believe, I just stopped caring about religion. I was never a fan of my own Catholicism anyway. (It probably also didn't help that I was self-concious, insecure, depressed adolescent). That Chick tract just reminded me of all that shit and made me realize how much I fucking hate, and I mean HATE, religion, especially fundamentalism. I try to laugh it off sometimes, but seeing what this shit does to people's intelligence just infuriates me. All the evolution-related education controversy we have in America can be traced to that idiotic mentality. I hate seeing Fundamentalist/evangelical music, movies, and books top the bestseller lists here. It just shows how many people buy into this shit. FUCK THEM. So, if you're an Evangelical/fundamentalist Christian and you want to save me because you "love me" or God "loves me", well FUCK YOU, JESUS IS A FUCKING CUNT!

Aja (aja), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i tend to defend religion (tho i am not particularly religious despite having been raised Catholic) saying 'it's saved as many people as it has destroyed' but i was never sure if that was statistically true, heh

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I'm not Catholic, I had to deal with the same similar mindset of 'Catholicism does not equal Christianity' among some students of mine in a writing class once (this had to do with their choice of writing topic rather than some sort of theological battle royale in class, I should note!). I was deeply confused at their insistence and pointed out that Catholics quite clearly considered themselves Christians, much as these students wanted to assume or believe otherwise. I don't think I necessarily changed minds but I did bring them up a bit short at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

uhm, i wouldn't use Chick & fundamentalists as a cause to blame all religion.

remember, you can't spell fundamentalist without the "mentalist" or the "fund". crazy people with money can't get you down, yo.

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What's this dude's problem? I live in South Carolina too, it's not that friggin' bad. A lot of people from out of state have been moving down here for a while, so there's more infuences besides Southern Baptist around nowadays. This guy must live in a small town or something.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

whenever religion is brought up you turn into a 14 yr old who's just heard the dead kennedys for the first time last week.

"we mature people have learned that religion is ok and there are broader social causes to the injustices and it's not the doctrine but what you do with it blah blah blah blah blah"

two things adolescents have always been right about: 1) the whole point is to have plenty of sex and 2) religion is bullshit

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that discourse about religion should be capable of getting past the FUCK IT ALL IT IS BAD AND IT CAUSES WARS YOU KNOW AND YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO THINK AND I AM GOING TO BURN DOWN A CHURCH WHILST LISTENING TO JUDAS PRIEST-stage, however this isn't often the case on ILE. Perhaps that is what Strongo means?

Sybil is about a girl with multiple personalities. The doctor tells me Jenny and Marsha like it but I think they are only trying to gain control of my body Arrghrhrhrhrh.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I was tempted to go and do theology if I got to learn lots about masochistic old saints, especially Therese de Lisieux. However I think it wouldn't all be about drinking the pus from lepers (although that's Catherine of Sienna or something) so meh to it all.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

don't warm to me, I'm just unnecessarily worked up over something that can't be fixed and besides it's helped so many people and what's the harm if people want a little comfort and besides remember so many of the 20th century's great leaders used religion as the gentle prod to introduce truly progressive ideas, it's so immature and ill-reasoned to imagine that the world might be a much richer and less hateful place without Christianity, and certainly cranking up one's rhetoric doesn't help a bit, etc etc etc etc

you called me john before I stopped calling you strongo, so, um, "nyah" or some comparably mature riposte

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique if you take down Christianity capitalism will follow, they're essentially the same thing

Even assuming you are correct, how do you proposed getting rid of Christianity? I don't know why I'm asking, because the above statement proves you are evidently devoid of insight and pretty damn ignorant with it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's idiotic to perceive Christianity as a social evil - as much as any other religion - I can't believe this has to be pointed out over and over again but the problem is mis-interpretation of and too much reliance on religious texts which often seem to be founded on mis-interpretation themselves (NOT EVERYTHING IN THE BIBLE HAS TO BE ADHERED TO IN ORDER TO BE A TRUE CHRISTIAN shockah - this would be based on the traditional law of what's known as COMMON SENSE. of course this causes problems but remember a) who wrote the Bible (lots of men) and b) all the actual worthwhile books in it coincidentally DON'T contain any mention of 'God hating homosexuals', 'bathing in ass milk after masturbating' or other nonsense)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah you're only supposed to believe the nice bits ;)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont like christianity or capitalism, but wouldnt you say that capitalism was the motor for the removal of christianity from governance,(sep of church/state)? ie, capitalism could be posited as a refutation of religion (and then, as the future victor, it remoulded christianity in its own image, as germanic protestantism), leading to the death of overt christianity, and the rise of implicit christianity.

but the implicitness of capitalist protestantism became so implicit and unsaid that it faded away, disappeared from public life, and now christianity is fighting back against capitalism, trying to regain its crown?

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo I apologize, you're right about everything except your first point (ile's "religion bashing" tendencies = only if my one-man crusade counts as a "tendency," everybody else luvs the stuff) - people are so eager to say "oh Christianity isn't the problem, it's MISINTERPRETATION!" that trying to resist is tilting against the highest windmill

but stevem the short version is, of course the text is mutable, all texts are infinitely mutable, so you gotta judge the religion on its track record (not on your or my or anybody else's reading of 'what the Bible really means: there is no 'what it really means'). "The actual worthwhile books" = according to whom? Christianity's historical record makes all the other religions look like harmless infants.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure if you remove every trace of Christianity from the world people would find some other justification for acting like cunts. Pinning it on one religion or another (or all of them - those crazy fundamentalist Buddhists eh?) seems like finding a convenient scapegoat and a refusal to look at the heart of the problem.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

but religion has surely worked well as a social mode of control? opium of the people and all that?

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure if you remove every trace of Christianity from the world people would find some other justification for acting like cunts.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

im not sure its about 'behaving like cunts', surely we are talking more about power structures than individuals beliefs?

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

so you gotta judge the religion on its track record

this is the error - a religion is not tangible in that sense - you can only judge the accuracy of the practitioners of the religion in doing just that.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the implicitness of capitalist protestantism became so implicit and unsaid that it faded away, disappeared from public life, and now christianity is fighting back against capitalism, trying to regain its crown?

This is v interesting, but I disagree quite strongly -- I still think the ol' Xtian values of graft, monogamy, and ooh, everything else that're up in my grill at this moment in time, are going strong.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 6 February 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, look - the heart of the problem is obviously human nature, right? It's not as though Christianity invented the human proclivity for cruelty. So then we might ask: "How best to discourage the basest human tendencies?" I submit to you that Christianity (brilliantly, if the world were a novel and not flesh-n-bones) models as an ideology meant to encourage our nobler tendencies while actually facilitating our worst ones. I'd agree that if Buddhism had thought up the Crusades, or had as many missionary tendencies, I might well rant about the myriad evils of Buddhism. But the fact is that Christianity invented proselytizing; historically, religions had been something sought-out by willing participants, not brought to them. Christianity changed all that. For the worse. To say so, even on a thread titled "I Fucking Hate Religion," is apparently the not-done thing, though.

xpost. Stevem, the religion is its adherents - even according to the religion itself ("we are the body of Christ" both in the Catholic mass & in protestant doctrine, "by their fruits shall ye know them," etc). In this way religion is great, because most philosophies don't have workshops where you can see whether their ideas play out or not. Christianity does: the Western world!

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Now, if it was called "I hate fucking religion" or "I hate fucking the religious," the discussion would be in-depth and thoughtful, with William Buckley contemplating the nature of connubial intercourse with believers.

i think a thread title 'i fucking hate religion' is perfect for discussion and i immediately wanted to know the reasons why and whether the points made were valid. i'm sure it's been done before and will be done again - i don't think a bunch of people showing up just to effectively say 'this thread sucks you idiots' is helpful.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it sucked.

I enjoy reading about religion because I find it interesting the different ways people devote their lives to a alledged higher power.

I also believe heaven/the afterlife is something humans invented to deal with the hopelessness of death, but thats another story.

I actually don't have a very rigid or intolerant view of religion as I made it seem (I did when I was younger, though). I apologize for trying to keep the joke going on and on way after others had figured it out (thanks to my incompetence). I am very sincerely sorry.

Oh, and that "Jesus is a cunt" line was a phrase on the back of a Cradle of Filth t-shirt I remember seeing somewhere.
