A thread to discuss the sport of pro cycling, cos the Marco Pantani thread's more of a memorial than owt else.

Looking through the squads on http://www.cyclingnews.com (props to Mr Beckhouse). Credit Agricole have gone way downhill, which is sad cos I'll always remember them as Boardman's team... they've all gone, gone, gone, and left Christophe Moreau.

One suspects, looking at Phonak and Brioche's squads, that Hamilton and Beloki are eyeing up some serious shots at the Tour this year. Both transferred with one other member of their previous squads for company (Jalabert, Beloki's brother) into teams that contain roughly no other names I recognise.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

By way of comparison, Telekom have Ullrich and Vinokourov, #2 and #3 in last year's Tour. That could be an interesting relationship there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

CA were always fun for anglophones, it was home away from home, Julich and Vaughters from Colorado, Boardman and O'Grady. No more.

I doubt if Saiz could get have gotten Heras had Beloki not left him, but if that were the case, that'd have been super scary. As is Liberty Seguros is credible w/ possible revelation Nozal and Heras and the Gonzalez bros. Do they leave one of these guys out to peak for the Vuelta? They will need to represent there.

After watching Valverde at the Vuelta, that first stage he won- he looked like a man among boys despite being only 23. With a gradual uphill sprint, he looked like a monster-- megawatts. And on the Pandera, chasing Cardenas and Heras! I am sad Kelme got downgraded. I assume that means no TdF.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Saiz's downfall is that he never picks a leader before the start of the Tour. With the exception of Beloki he's always gone with the multiple leader approach.

Kelme should get an invite anyway, they always manage to find someone new that does well. Maybe if they do well early in the year? But I've learned never to underestimate the ability of Leblanc to invite the wrong teams.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Saiz has had much success, but they don't seem commensurate with the level of talent, or with some of the opportunities that ONCE had.

I don't follow him too closely, but he seems like a classic player's coach, getting results via the strength of his relationships to his riders rather than tactical superiority.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelme's problem has always been that they never ride as a team. It's all about who can get to the top of the hill first. That wins the Vuelta but not the Giro or the Tour.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, mountain stage wins are their M.O. I love it tho, it's like watching lightweight boxing.

I think a mountain stage win is much better publicity-wise than waiting watching the peleton seethe down the final straight hoping Petacchi or Cipo or Zabel will bounce out 50 meters before the finish and get you 2 seconds of screen time. Even mtn attacks that don't succeed get you more screen time.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Therefore, see Kelme's (the shoe co.) record as the longest running sponsorship in pro cycling.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never seen a pair of Kelmes. So I googled some, and...almost as ugly as the jersey. Not as cool though. The shoe logo is a big "K".

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I had never seen them either. I always thought that they were dress shoes, not athletics. Haha! Now I gotta have a pair! Isn't it strange that the don't have cycling shoes?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My girl is gonna kill for some. She'e the Kelme fan around here. I'm more of the Domo type. Although I admit to being a huge LA fan. Can't help it really. The guy is pretty badass.
But given a choice, the guy I would most like to see ride would be Johan Museeuw.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

WBS: Aside from the Belokis, that Brioche squad looks pretty handy to me - Sylvain Chavanel (most aggressive rider on the tour last year, I think), Geslin (who wore yellow at some stage right?), Lefevre, former French champ Didier Rous still going strong...

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Which team is Bradley Wiggins with now? I hope he gets to rise the tour - imagine him vs Millar in the prologue, how awesome would that be?

Jan's back with Telekom, eh? They need to stop wasting their efforts on the dull dull dull Zabel in the first week and just keep Jan out of trouble. Vinu can help him up the climbs.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Wiggins is on Credit Agricole. Yeah, that'd be a cracking prologue, (providing that chain stays on!).

Zabel, he seems like one of the genuinely nice blokes in the sport. And still right up there in the rankings. Telekom-wise, I think that Cadel Evans could sneak the odd stage win if he rides the tour. He's a gutsy lad.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Any chance of Cipollini riding this year? Or is he gone forever?

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope not, but I fear so.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Speedy I can't put the image up here, but I think Tauro blk/yellow scheme is actually pretty cool if you can deal with Indoor shoes. What the hell is "futsal"?

http://www.kelme.com/tienda/55468_i.html

Cadel Evans is one of those "I can't stay on the bike" people where I eventually question their bike-handling or placement skills. Hamilton too.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone know when that Tyler Hamilton iMax film from last year's Tour is coming out, cos that is going to be frikkin' awesome?

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

stop wasting their efforts on the dull dull dull Zabel
I think the thing that makes Zabel sooo great is the fact that Telekom refuses to make an effort for him. He never has a Telekom lead-out but they don't hesitate to share his prize money. And have you ever looked at the guys palmares? He races all year, and wins. Those Germans need some help with their kits though. That pink and black with those goofy ill-fitting Limar helmets. The team I wrenched for last season rode in those buckets. I was given a uniform for the races I rode in but handed back the Limar.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Zabel is awesome, a personal favorite.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, have you seen this? Sounds cool. Don't know when it comes out though.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Cadel Evans is one of those "I can't stay on the bike" people where I eventually question their bike-handling or placement skills.

I know what you mean, but it's sort of odd considering his mountain biking background. Must be those darn skinny tyres...

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Germans need some help with their kits though. That pink and black with those goofy ill-fitting Limar helmets.

Yep, that colour scheme even makes their Pinarellos an eyesore. Mmmmm, Pinarellos...

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Zabel's dull, true, but, yes, he's awesome. He can't beat the zippy boys in the first week these days, but, unlike them, he clings on over the mountains. Respect. Heir to Stumpf.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll never forgive Zabel for that criminal flat-top he sported the other year. Robbie McEwan is my sprinter of choice when Super Mario isn't about.

The worst thing about the Telekom kit was a few years back when it was made by Adidas (probably still is), and they wore black shorts with three white lines creeping up each buttock before stopping abruptly, giving the look of long sinister finger caressing their arses.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Robbie McEwan, eh? Are ya sure? He's gotta rep as a major whiner. Mitigating factor: rides wheelies.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Cadel Evans is one of those "I can't stay on the bike" people
Unlike Hamilton, I think that Cadels problem is linked to his lack of peloton experience. It's fuckin' dangerous in there! Where as Tyler, who would whoop my ass any day of the week in willingness to suffer, just literally *can* ride faster than he *should*. I'll never forget seeing LA descending a pass in 2001, taking broken pavement no-handed while eating, Ulrich behind him with a bidon held in his teeth, and Tyler several minutes back holding on for dear life!

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Thursday, 19 February 2004 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I warmed to McEwan when he used to do those to camera pieces each day for Channel 4 whilst cruising in the peloton.

My favourite sprinter ever is Mario, closely followed by that unpronouncable, unspellable maniac Djmolodin Abdujaburov. That must be spelt wrong.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a pair of Kelme trainers years ago (tennis ones) that I bought iin Spain, they were possibly the comfiest trainers I've ever had

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My sprint hero was Laurent Jalabert, but he became even more of a god to me after his sprinting days were done.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Abdoujaparov, what a character - disgraced, of course, like so many others. I'll never forget when he hit the copper taking a photo on the Champs bloody Elysees. Madness.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll never forget seeing LA descending a pass in 2001, taking broken pavement no-handed while eating, Ulrich behind him with a bidon held in his teeth, and Tyler several minutes back holding on for dear life!

True, but have you ever seen Tyler in person? He's really really small. I think that makes his descents much tougher compared to LA at 155 or JU at 165+. And the comment about JU tells a lot about how his descending has improved- Riis had bungee him to his wheel in 97 to get him down the cols. I guess LA learned from Sean Yates from what I read.

When I'd see Jon Vaughters in our local training ride, I was totally amazed that he got around the pro peloton at all, he is soooo slight. When you ride behind him you can see his vertebrae. I mean even more than usual when you ride behind some skinny-ass climber.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Abdoujaparov, what a character - disgraced, of course, like so many others. I'll never forget when he hit the copper taking a photo on the Champs bloody Elysees. Madness.

Don't think that was Abdoujaparov or Paris. Jalabert and some other bloke caught the copper, although it might have been from Abdu pushing them to the barriers. I think it was in Bordeaux. Can someone clarify this?

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was that new Italian sprinter last year who won 4 stages and then retired on the first mountain, Chipo-style?

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Nick, it wasn't the photographer incident it was the giant Coke bottle incident.

Most famously in 1991, "Abdou" won the competition despite his spectacular crash on the Champs Elysees, where he swerved into the barrier, collided with a giant promotional coke can and somersaulted into the air. He had to cross the line unaided to win, so the team picked him up, put him back on the bike and he rode slowly over the last few meters with team members and medical staff either side of him ready to catch him if he fell.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was that new Italian sprinter last year who won 4 stages and then retired on the first mountain, Chipo-style?

That was Petacchi, who certainly looks like the new Cipo. But to be fair about half his team dropped out over the course of a couple of days with a stomach bug. He didn't exactly get in the car at the bottom of the first climb and catch a flight to the beach within a couple hours.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that makes his descents much tougher compared to LA at 155 or JU at 165+.
I disagree with this, BUT I COULD BE WRONG. How about, whats his name, The Falcon. Rode for Saeco. Wasn't he realy small. I have met Tyler a couple of times, and he is small, but not as small as Simoni, who I've seen him standing next to. Simoni is tiny, and is a fine descender.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Friday, 20 February 2004 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely LA is bigger than 155 - that's like 5"3' or something isn't it?

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

He means lbs., as in weight.

I sincerely hope there's no truth in it, but there's an, err, interesting Tyler Hamilton story doing the rounds at the moment.

Just thought I'd flag up this radio show on Resonance FM. Sounds like it might be just the ticket for any ILX0R bike nuts...

"BIKE
A weekly show delving into the art, science, politics and transcendental pleasure of cycling, in London and beyond. From the Tour de France to Critical Mass, from cycle commuting to Kraftwerk, if it's got wheels, pedals, handlebars and a bell, it's here.
Joining Jack in the studio will be David Ferry, internationally exhibited artist head of printmaking at Winchester School of Art, but also an amateur road racing star who's competed in many classic races on three continents."

Oof - you know that that's gotta hurt! Note the guys in the background haven't even reacted to this yet. Trying to figure out what's happened, think the wheel's gone first, then the frame. Whatever, this is going to make me even more of a mincer downhill than I was to start with.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

That happened to my brother once, on a gravel road. He wasn't wearing a shirt.

I'm guessing he wasn't wearing any skin afterwards either.

i just ordered ROLLERS.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Pal of mine had a pretty bad roller accident. Turned round to talk to someone and shot off sideways at 25mph into his living room wall. Be careful!

Training for something Cutty?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

From a pure physics standpoint does this make sense? He may have fallen into the wall, but the rotational inertia is not even nearly great enough to "shoot" you into it. You've got two rotating wheels, but the rim and tire combo are like 3/4 kg each. What happens? Tire damage (blowout in my case) and carpet damage (burnthrough). And embarrassment. I did get to a point where I could take my t-shirt off while riding em tho.

If one must ride indoors, rollers are good. Those spinning bikes at the gym are nice too--fixey drivetrain with a huge flywheel.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

nine years pass...

After not even 3 hours of bike riding yesterday my penis remains partially numb. Reading about saddle induced erectile dysfunction is not reassuring me about this either. How does one solve such a problem without shelling out a bunch of money for a addled with a hole in it?

ed.b, Friday, 18 July 2014 22:30 (eleven years ago)

A saddle with a hole in it. Any other perineum care advice is appreciated.

ed.b, Friday, 18 July 2014 22:32 (eleven years ago)

The saddle with the hole is the only way I can think of around this (I've tried a few different ones, but have settled on Selle Anatomica). My issue has not been Boner dysfunction but just a very sore perineum after riding. As for other tips I can offer; avoid pants that are tight down there and avoid spicy foods (or so a urologist told me once). Unfortunately sex seems to aggravate an already-sore perineum.

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Saturday, 19 July 2014 04:45 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I am.just going to sporting for a new saddle, probably. Tilting the saddle downward apparently helps too. Didn't know about spicy foods though, strange...

ed.b, Saturday, 19 July 2014 12:18 (eleven years ago)

I'm having a similar thing where I'm riding on my perineum instead of my seatbones and I can't figure out how to adjust the saddle and handlebars so that I don't do that w/o actually like PUSHING myself back w/ my arms

DERE is no DERE DERE (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 19 July 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

frame too large? handlebar stem too long? the recommended frame sizes can vary a lot in terms of actual suitability ime.

brother a keen cyclist and he recently dropped two sizes and has never been happier on a bike (tho he does like a quite "aggressive" feeling).

general point being that no matter what is recommended to you, I tend to try and find what feels like a comfortable geometry - regardless of what I'm "supposed" to need!

(I remember getting rid of "old bluey" and buying what I thought was p much exactly the same set of measurements for a "better" bike and I was never truly happy on it.

one year passes...

I am reeling right now. A friend of mine, and one of the most tireless advocates for cycling in Cleveland, has been spending the last two months cycling across the country from Cleveland to Seattle, where she is moving permanently. Her fiancé had moved there ahead of time and set up house to await her. Saturday night, she was hit from behind in Montana by a car going more than 60mph and has been hospitalized since then with potentially life-threatening injuries. Everyone I know is in shock. Shelli literally lived for cycling; she biked more than 30 miles a day at least, back and forth to work, and has cycled all over America.

Oh damn. So sorry to hear this. Sending absolute best.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 16:10 (nine years ago)

So horrible Phil. I think about that and it's why I rarely ride on the road anymore.

Brevs Mekis (dandydonweiner), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 02:20 (nine years ago)

A woman in Montana who was on the scene when Shelli was hit, and rendered what aid she could (she happens to be a veterinarian) until EMS arrived happened to post about it on FB: https://www.facebook.com/bethany.e.harris.9/posts/10104501151363548 . She then later found our FB group for keeping each other posted about Shelli's status and has been posting there.

Two of our other friends -- one of whom leads our local cycling group -- flew out with Shelli's mom. They've been keeping her in a medically-induced coma for a few days, she had surgeries on her leg, hip and arm and they want to see if the frontal lobe swelling subsides. She can breathe on her own but they're keeping her on a respirator while she's comatose. (Apparently yesterday morning she started coughing and reached for the tube, but they dosed her with additional Dialaudid and she relaxed. I guess that's good?)

Cumstaun (Phil D.), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 11:46 (nine years ago)

yes good in the sense that a) it's SOP and b) results were what would have been anticipated.

A lot of waiting and hoping (and praying, if you're that kind of person) is about all they can do right now. So rough.

Brevs Mekis (dandydonweiner), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 11:55 (nine years ago)

Ugh, Shelli was taken to emergency surgery this morning, as pressure in her brain increased overnight so they're going to temporarily remove a portion of her skull. She's still being kept comatose and incubated.

If/when she's stabilized and cleared by a neurosurgeon, they're going to Lifeflight her back to Cleveland, which is so bitterly ironic I can barely handle it. It's also going to eat up most of what her GoFundMe has raised so far, about $30,000.
