I have been asked to play keyboards with a band at a coming-soon gig and also some recording. Apparently 'the parts are all written and they'll get them to me soon'.

This would be cool except.........I can't play keyboards beyond the one-finger melody level. So it looks like a real life 'faking it' is on the cards!

Have you ever had to fake it, musically or otherwise?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, you totally have to do this Dr C, it sounds great!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yes, I had to fake playing rhythm guitar once when I was in the old collegio. I would SO have won faking it, as long as you believed that one plays chords using all five fat fingers at the same time whilst giggling ridiculously.

Four years later, I have actually learnt some chords! E and A and D! If your band needs a rhythm guitarist who knows THREE CHORDS (with a bit of a break between getting the D - that one is hardest) then you should get in touch.

I ownz0r the keyboards so I have rarely had to fake it - apart from in my music theory tests where they ask you to sing the note they last played. I MEAN COME OFF IT.

What sort of band is it? I mean, if they turn out to be minimalist dronerock then you're laughing*, if you need to be doing technically complex Hammond organ mentalism then its a bit more problematic.

*Not on stage obviously, that would get you sacked from most dronerock bands.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

technically complex Hammond organ mentalism

Rick Wakeman REPRESENTZ!

lets do it on ice wearing capes!! (starry), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't *do* dronerock!! Actually they are not a million miles away from the Fall in sound, which would be OK, except the last time I saw them they sounded suspiciously *rehearsed*.

Obv I will be studying Wakeman's every note on my beloved Yes CDs from now on.

BTW - you *should* be in a band Starry.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there really a set of action figures that includes both Sean Astin AND Bronson Pinchot?

jazz odysseus, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I am lost.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, what's the band called, ROCKtor C?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

No it's not called ROCKtor C.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, that would be stupid, wouldn't it, ROCKtor C.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Bon Jovi calls his band Bon Jovi and look where THEY are with their stupid name.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You haven't joined Bon Jovi, have you Dr C?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry Dr. C, I was just responding to the statement that we all know what kind of band starry would be in)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the lego musician on the far right in the first picture is playing a lego theremin? and why are starsky and hutch with the legos in the second picture?

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 19 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I once played guitar in a pit "orchestra" for a production of Little Shop of Horrors. I say "orchestra" because it was me, a drummer and a keyboardist. They gave me a score, but that kinda went out the window. It was lots of fun.

Prude (Prude), Thursday, 19 February 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, that's a lego theremin. fantastic.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 19 February 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

They just told me there's a rehearsal on (gulp) next Tuesday!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 February 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

A version of Starksy and Hutch with Sean Astin and Elijah Wood would be the best thing ever. And Pimp Gollum!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Rehearsed with the band last night and.... I'M IN! They liked the garagey cheap organ thrash that I came up with - just as well because it's the only thing I can do. So... gigs coming up at Bull and Gate on Sat 3rd April and Brighton a few days later. Come and see me!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Bump - less than 3 weeks to this. Come and see us on Sat 3rd or at the Brighton Pressure Point on Mon 5th. Get it in yer diaries!

We're on last at the B&G circa 10.30, so plenty of time to do summat else first before enjoying our "two-fingers snarling punk sound" (BBC Berkshire)and "Sheer bloody poetry" (B&G Website). Cor!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(ha ha, I might be playing guitar in an all-girl Busted tribute band, but don't tell anyone about it, I'm embarrassed.)

The River Kate (kate), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw man, you clash with Mission of Burma!

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mission of Burma can f- off. This is the big one!

Bands for the April 3rd B&G gig confirmed as us : (http://www.fractured.info/), reformed early 80's cult heroes The Disco Students (http://www.discostudents.com/Menu.asp, and the venerable Probing Cranks (no website).

I think we're on about 9.30.
