I know, just on the heels of Kingfish's trip! Hopefully, you lot won't be all FAP'd out by then.

Anyway, I'm planning on staying with an old college chum for a few days and then kinda winging it. There's no real purpose to the trip, other than having a week's worth of vacation time I needed to use up by the end of 2004Q1.

So can we plan a date for drinking and/or carousing? I might also be interested in crashing at someone's place for a night, just so I can relieve my pal of the burden of putting me up. That is, if you'll have me.

Also: wasn't Ned going to maybe be in town one of these weekends, too?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

And well, "purpose of the trip" also being visiting the one major American city I've always wanted to visit but haven't.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I will be taking good note of all the "what to do in SF threads" in the archives -- I think there are several.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: wasn't Ned going to maybe be in town one of these weekends, too?

I was thinking about it but checking with friends I won't be able to make it to SF until April. So still on the cards, but alas, I fear we'll have to meet another time. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

bumpity-bump

I will be in Dallas TX and Phoenix AZ for some of this time.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, that's a string of good shows. I'd definitely suggest the High Llamas show for Jaymc, but I'd also try the Dead Moon, Hella, Deerhoof headlining and Neil Hamburger efforts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I will definitely be at that Chinese Stars show.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Not familiar with the name, what are they like?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

chinese stars!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, I was thinking of seeing High Llamas in Chicago on Friday, but maybe I will wait? (Esp. if someone wants to come with me.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how that's the thread where Dan Selzer says, "All right, fine, I'm here, but I don't want to get sucked in further!" *doodlydoodlydoodly* "Okay, what's happening on ILX today?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I just noticed the High Llamas are playing with Stars, and the person I'm coming to SF with LOVES Stars.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent. I was wondering if you were going to make a formal announcement about this. Count me in for whatever, obv. I'd offer you a place to spend the night but our place is a wee bit cramped. Though if you're truly desperate, let me know...

Numbers, Deerhoof, Bobby Conn, Hawnay Troof, Ssion, Triangle @ Liminal, Oakland (3/6)

Poisonally, I'd be up for this, and not just because it's in the East Bay. ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be in Dallas TX and Phoenix AZ for some of this time.

I know it's prob. for work but man, you get around. Do you know when you will be in town?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm in town for 2 weeks! look me up! the trip is 1/2 work, 1/2 play.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay! I would like to make it out to AZ sometime.

Well, I might at least try and make it to that Devendra show. I'll let you know.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I might be up there in that time frame.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

This could get messy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I know. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Or just nerdy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc is in a band!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

scrabble? duct tape casios? hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I will definitely be at that Chinese Stars show.

maybe we can go together!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Keith Cleversley!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes indeed! I'll bring CDs with me!

So I think my plan is this: I'm going to stay with my friend Eric in Alameda from Thursday through Monday or Tuesday, and then look for a cheap hotel in San Francisco proper for the rest of my stay. (He has other friends that will be visiting during that time.)

Either weekend is probably still cool for a FAP.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Alameda!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

East Bay represent!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

cheap hotel in San Francisco proper

How cheap?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I will definitely be at that Chinese Stars show.

maybe we can go together!

:-D

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I did some initial scouting and found something for $35 a night. I don't remember where it was. I haven't called. I wonder, though, if places are getting booked up with certain people in town to get marriage licenses. In some ways, I'm totally unprepared for this trip!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, well that's much cheaper than anywhere I can think of, so well done.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, not exactly. I just checked, and it's all booked up!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I should be a bit more proactive about this.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.grantplaza.com/

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Dunno what their rates are now, used to be in the 50s, sometimes less.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, I'll look into it.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, there's a hostel with single private rooms for $55. I'm not excited about a shared bath, but the price is decent enough, and it's in a good location.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Either weekend is probably still cool for a FAP.

Like I said on the Kingfishee thread, I still work Saturdays and Sunday is my one day off, the bonus being that I am already in the city as of Saturday evening. Is anyone else around, I wonder?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to tahoe this weekend

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

have fun!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Saturday sounds nice!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm out of town this weekend, otherwise I would be there.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys ain't no fun.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy anniversary, Kyle!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, well, if it's for a good reason!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be there, J, wherever there is. Leee, gygax!, Sean, Alex?

Maybe we will all go over to Aja's house and listen to the Foo Fighters.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

if I ditched my anniversary for a FAP it would be my last anniversary.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Zeitgeist. Beer garden. Bikers. "underground punk rock" jukebox.

Ah! That's my sister's favorite place to hang out at yet, been there myself a number of times, and so have various ILXors during earlier FAPs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

In the footsteps of giants...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m made a baseball funny! You are officially American.

Leee the Lee (Leee), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

That's "permanent resident" to you, sonny boy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I previewed the bar yesterday with a mid-afternoon beer! I approve!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheating!

(I'm still good for tomorrow, btw)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at the hemlock from 12-1 last night. there was an animal collective soundalike band playing in the other room.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I "previewed" @d@m today! I approve!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That's sweet.

Well, I guess J and I will be over at Zeitgeist reasonably close to six.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What do y'all look like? (me is 6 ft pretty thin short short blond hair black framed indie guy glasses)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm short, long-ish brown hair probably wearing ubiquitous blue jacket. Jaymc is a bit taller than me and has shortish dark hair and a beard.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never actually been to Zeitgeist, but I guess we'll try and be outside if we can.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hey weather, fuck you right back!

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

that was from me listening to Eamon & Frankie

i look like this. I'm always this angry

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Aight, I'll probably pop by at 6. See ya then.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm getting conflicting info from the Bart page -- does it operate 8pm at night??

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

where are all y'all gonna be around 10pm?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

don't be a lamer gygax!

i have bday dinner plans at 8.30, so i'll be out

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I meant to ask if Bart is open past 11pm.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

JaXon, check your emailz.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Leee, it better be. That's how I plan to get home too.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Leee - http://www.transitinfo.org/tripplanner/index.asp

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think BART is available until midnight?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I am twiddling my thumbs now because the ferry to Alcatraz is all booked up for the rest of the weekend, and the vegetarian restaurant I was going to go to (Millennium) isn't open for lunch.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a great veggie place down o'farrell (572 o'farrell at from millennium called "the golden era" which is at jones. it's not as nice as millennium but it the food is really great.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that was supposed to read 572 o'farrell at jones.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes it is, I was looking at a line that closes early. I knew something smelled fishy!

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

So yeah, I'll be there around 8.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

J, I can just meet you at Zeitgeist if that makes your afternoon plans any easier. I just thought you might be downtown.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay I'm sorry, but that was too packed for me. I've never been to Zeitgeist on a Friday nite with it being this warm. . . there was a long ass line even to get in (WTF!?!) And it was insane once I got in. I tried to look around, but it seemed a futile attempt given the descriptions and all (I really looked for JaXon, but to no avail.) I hope you guys got together and had fun and hopefully we can try to meet up another time. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i appologize also. if i had written down adam's number (or had anyone elses), i would have called. the line was way too fucking long. it would have taken at least half an hour to get in. we (i had a bunch of friends with me that forced me to go elsewhere) went around the corner to Hush Hush where it was $.25 beers. understandably i was very drunk. next time

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, I think we might have spotted you but we couldn't get to you. Sorry, I didn't realize it would be quite that busy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 March 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I'll see people at Dizzee or Soundmurderer? Looks like I'm going to both.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 March 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame gygax!

No, really, it's too bad that we all couldn't meet up. @d@m and Leee and I had a nice time, though. Oh well.

And, actually, I almost went to Golden Era. Or rather, I went to a nearby Thai place (Osha) that a friend recommended, and then, as I was walking down to SoMa, I passed Golden Era and realized I'd meant to check it out.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 13 March 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't be at Dizzee (NYC descriptions make me think this will not be worth taking the nite off from work) but I will be at Luomo on Thursday and Soundmurderer on Saturday (I'll probably go early to get the discount). A meet on Saturday (maybe at the Arrow Bar) is definitely a possibility. I will figure out how to get a picture of myself online.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

there was a long ass line even to get in (WTF!?!)

Good god, how nuts.

(Anyway, let this serve as a heads-up from me that if all goes well I will definitely be up for some weekend in late April.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

God! We're having a winter heat wave. How do you like that.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 13 March 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait. It might be a spring heat wave. Oh whatever. Record breaking highs is all it is.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 13 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh, i'm going to Luomo. thanks for reminding me

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 13 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Luomo on Thursday

The words I feared! I didn't know this was going on, so I might actually go to Luomo rather than Soundmurderer. Where's the venue?

Also-Alex, were you wearing a red sweater or hoodie? I swear that was you. If it was, Me and Jaymc were standing my the pool table laden down with beers and burgers and couldn't make it through the crowd quickly enough to catch you before you left.

(x-post!)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummm, seeing as I'm pretty new here-what is a decent resource for finding out what's going on in the Bay Area? Flavorpill, maybe? I am clearly not well served by the glut of alternative weeklies in this respect.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

my evening got kind of confusing and I couldn't make it. it sounds like I wouldn't have found you anyway!

Alex: what exactly did you hear abut Dizzee in NY that makes you hesitant? Negative reviews?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 13 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a fine evening.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Sunday, 14 March 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

So many questions!

I was wearing a black Adidas hoodie and a blue t-shirt (I hope we really weren't that close haha and you are thinking of someone else.)

Flavorpill is the RESOURCE (that and ILM anyway. I heard about Luomo here.)

AND you should go to both! It's only $7 for Soundmurderer before 11am!

And I'm not seeing Dizzee cuz Reynolds description basically confirmed what I suspected (i.e. the sort of live show Rascal will be playing at Mezzanine won't be the sort that Dizzee is best served by) and I'm already switching a work shift this week to go to Luomo and I rarely go out three times 5 days and if I was gonna drop an event this would be the one I think I will enjoy the least (least dancing, most confusion, most hanger on hipster word-of-mouth, i.e. one of my co-workers is going cuz he heard this "british rapper" is really neat.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 14 March 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I also want to apologize if by the end of the night, I was drunk and obnoxious. I felt very chatty, but it's cuz I was in good company!

Chicago is cold and overcast right now. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 14 March 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I also want to apologize if by the end of the night, I was drunk and obnoxious. I felt very chatty, but it's cuz I was in good company!

No, it was a pleasure. Is it "bar-hopping" if you only go to two bars? Hope you enjoyed your trip.

Looks like I might in Chicago May/June, I'll let you know.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You may have been dronk, but obnoxious not at all. Good times.

I'll prob. be in Chitown too, but in early April instead.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? Sarah is going then, maybe I should catch a cheap flight...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)
