Most pragmatically useful, thing you've learned on this board.

For me, the most useful pragmatic advice I've discovered on this board was the following:

"Try this if you'd like to stifle your sneeze: when you feel the sneeze coming press firmly on your top lip until it passes. This has been proven by science." (Many thanks to Lawrence Kansas for that.)

I read this in passing, and thought, without the slightest belief that it might work, that I'd try it the next time I had the sneezes - which turned out to be yesterday. And

IT WORKS. IT BLOODY DOES!

Excuse the euphoria of those capitals, but I'm a chronic sneeze sufferer. Once I start, I have to go a full dozen or so. That is particularly annoying when I'm having a good chat with someone. This is the first time I've found anything that works. The moment you push your lip up, the tingling in your nose goes and you are back in control. Brilliant.

So I posted this first to bring it to more people's attention, and secondly to find out what other useful tips have appeared on this board.

I learnt not to bother going to new york, and that if your loo paper is out of synch, to turn the first page over.

The sneeze thing is AMAZING! I tried it today, it just totally and unambigously works. Why don't they teach it at schools? Is it bad for you?

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it can be v. bad

kephm, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Re the sneeze thing - they taught that one to us at school. What's up with kids these days?

Hey how do you do italics?

What I learned from this board: the gentle art of diffusing a potentially explosive argument through humour. Why don't you try it, I hear you asking. Someday I will, my friends, someday I will.

Much like the writer of the thread title I've learned the proper usage, of commas.

I can't think of anything right now, but I would like to reiterate my advice about thinking horny thoughts when you need not to laugh.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha, thanks. That one really is handy as we have a lot of meetings at work.

but I would like to reiterate my advice about thinking horny thoughts when you need not to laugh.

Does this work in reverse?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Not in my experience - I think horny is a dominant brainwave.

tickling the roof of your mouth with your tounge also helps you not sneeze, but then you have an itchy mouth.

Mark S's nail/key tip has proved invaluable.

Yes, I learnt how to make nice roasted asparagus, and some very basic html.

Ian, buy a couple cheap forties, knock 'em back, THEN decide your future. And stick with your decision, whatever it may be.

i discovered last night that that sneeze thing does indeed work! cool!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the problem with sneezing? I like it.

I have learned from this board that there are some rather nice people in the world who have interesting things to say.

I would like to offer the following tip in return cos my chat is not as good as some: Drinking a teaspoon of vinegar is a 100% perfect and instantaneous cure for hiccups.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

did none of you see cartoons as a kid where the characters were trying to be quite and one would start to sneeze and the other would press a finger against their top lip. it was a pretty common cartoon scene.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

o. nate (onate), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I tried it last night but I must've been a little late because I nearly bit my finger off with my explosive sneeze.
