A Handsome Man with a Un-Handsome Woman

A vapid, shallow thread:

Sometimes (rarely) I'll see a normal, tall, traditionally handsome man with a homely, unfit, gnarly girl, and I'll always wonder: "Jeez, what's he doing with her? He ought to be able to do better than that."

It's not uncommon to see a beautiful girl with an ugly, dorky guy, so we don't question it as much. But the other way around? "Man, he must be a really cool person. Maybe she used to be fine but let herself go. Maybe they got married when she was 15 in Turkmenistan or something..."

Please comment.

Love matters more than presumed standards of looks and this thread is ass.

Yeah, I go through the same thoughts as andy. So I'm a wanker.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't it make anyone else happy to see a couple with one good-looking person and one not-so-good-looking person? Like love really exists? Or as a refreshing reminder that peoples' standards of beauty are different? It makes me happy, just like it makes me happy to see punk rock couples, decked out in mohawks and leather and holding hands.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Andy did preface this thread by saying it was vapid and shallow... you gotta give him that.

He's the new old Kenan Hebert!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the one tall, one small or one young, one old? Harold, Maud?

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Those disgust me.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it when i see an old couple out together and still v into eachother. sometimes when i open my junk drawer i see old couples dancing in there.

It's probably an optical illusion. Are you sure I wasn't just standing closer to you?

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is it when a thread like this pops up everyone has to jump on the fucking PC wagon?

I don't see why this thread is any less relevant than the Mac & Cheese thread. It's suddenly "looks aren't important" even though we've talked about make-up and clothes and weight and everything else. Of course looks matter! You're not going to fall in love with someone the moment they open their mouths!

And another thing while we're on the subject - why did everyone hate Callum so much? The guy was only making a point and testing you all so why did you fall for it? I found him quite funny a lot of the time the way he showed people up like that.

Anyway, rant off.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe switch to decaf? how did the drunk/creep mix turn out?

kephm, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not going to fall in love with someone the moment they open their mouths!

Oo-er!

kephm, yeh, still waiting for soulseek to download stuff. Got lotsa cool ideas. I definitely putting Nimoy on it.

It's 8:53pm here not bedtime yet!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think guys take longer for their good looks to emerge. So the guy was probably awkward looking when they met. Either that, or he truly doesn't care about looks, which is rare and admirable because despite what people say and/or wish were true, people generally want to be with someone better looking.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, this sort of thing makes me happy in a way. I know one couple like this, where the guy is pretty attractive (and nice, funny, etc.), and the girl is cool as hell and yet has a face I don't know if I could ever be attracted to. Sometimes I just want to say, "Good for you guys, you both deserve to be happy."

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they are brothers?

kephm, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

People who put more effort into looking better often look better, and those people that want to put more effort into looking better may have shallow reasons for wanting to do so.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

he gay.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

do girls really aim to be handsome? (as opposed to aiming marriage)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like handsome girls a lot.

it makes me sad to see a beautiful girl with a hideous man but not really the other way around. see, I am not gay, just something else.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

where can we get these UN handsome women???? Montserrat??????

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

just like it makes me happy to see punk rock couples, decked out in mohawks and leather and holding hands

i'd be even happier to see a punk rock dude going out with a non-punk rock person though, a jazz loving bird, or something. aw, trans-genre love. as opposed to trans-gender love, which can also be great I suppose.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see why this thread is any less relevant than the Mac & Cheese thread

talking PC on a Mac thread is just wrong.

pc police (ken c), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I am happy when I see couples of deeply different attractivness. Like, a good looking guy with and ugly girl, or a georgeous female with an ugly bloke - it gives me hope that yes, people arn't as shallow as they usually appear.

ALso old couples that still act all teenager-like - it makes me think that mayeb love isn't a temporary distraction from the important business of being grumpy.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with RJG.

Also, I think the world needs more beautiful males. Where on earth are they?

the bluefox, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

'Hustle' on bbc1. Specifically, Adrian Lester.

pete s, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Love matters more than presumed standards of looks and this thread is ass.

Don't think this is statistically valid. Looks matter much more. Most people hook up with people on a rough par with themselves looks wise. Abberations either way are proportionally rare. More so in favor of ugly, but rich and powerful, guys. Still, rare. What's love got to do, got to do with it?

And this thread is ass: The Assiest Thread in the History of Ass

Jeez, what's this doing on ILX? We ought to be able to do better than this. uh...what alternative universe are you living in?
