ILX Downtime

Yesterday one of the ILX servers crashed. I haven't figured out why yet. (will investigate)

I would have had the machine back up within a couple of hours, but when I got to the building where it was housed I found the lift that's supposed to take me to the basement server room was out of order. Normally I'd just take the stairs, but some genius decided to lock the door between the stairwell and the basement - making it all but completely inaccessible. Hence, I had to wait until I got into work this morning (Australian time, remember?) before I could go down and fix it.

Sorry, folks.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks a bunch.

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

thank God! on the other hand, I got a lot of stuff done

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking typical that the server would go down on a public holiday, too.

I've been looking into the problem, but it looks like somehow the server logs have deleted themselves. Great.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I love you I love you I love you Andrew.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

muchos appreciados Andrew

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha sigh today was sooooo productive

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

YAY! (i actually got some work done today)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it wasn't.

crosspost

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and god bless you, andrew, for bringing ILX back up!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What holiday in Australia? Can Americans celebrate it, too?

andy, Monday, 8 March 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX day

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

koala taco day!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Labour day.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

salvage a little of yr work week day

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And AFAIK it's a Victoria-only thing.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the other states have it on different days

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

but i thought that every day in australia was do-nothing-but-drink-beer-and-fix-servers day

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Two cases a day for every man, woman and child! VB!

andy, Monday, 8 March 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, I kiss you.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks Andrew, it's like ILX was frozen in time!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM is still boring i see

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Must make up for lost unproductiveness!

Leee the Lee (Leee), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Take an extra coffee break today, Andrew.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the server serve you? Or do you serve the server?

Who's serving who?

andy, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

whom

Leee the Lee (Leee), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yay Andrew! Thanks; I've been pining all day.

cis (cis), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if its a good thing or bad that I didnt even notice this til 15 mins before it came back up just now. Man, I must be playing too much SimCity4.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Does that mean the AC/DC song should be "Who Made Whom?"

andy, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Teenage angst has served me well
But now i'm bored and old..."

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot claim productiveness but I also extend my thanks to you Andrew. You do so much for us, you rock!

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yay andrew! thanks for minding the server so wonderfully!

I really wasn't more productive today anyway.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew thanks!

It was strange to have a day without ilx.. but maybe it should be done at least a day each year, so we don't get too dependent on it..

oh maybe just an hour

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah for Andrew! And yes, indeed, I got work done too -- in fact a whole slew of work that would have otherwise made the end of March/start of April a lot more obnoxious. So for that reason I salute the silence!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was invited into a chat for the first time in MONTHS today. We're pretty desperate, no?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I've been inviting you on and off over the past few days, ya punk!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

A good day for this to happen, since I spent part of it under anaesthetic anyway! Good work, Andrew.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i spoke to an actual real, live person today.
oh, god, it was awful.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

this morning, i fell flat on my back, blacked out for a few minutes, and didn't go to school. human interaction has been next to nil.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was so angry when I couldn't get on the ILX site today. I mean, is this the kind of service I fucking pay for? When I want to post something, I want to post it right now, goddammit. I have rights.

Isn't Andrew a sweet boy for tending to the server?!? And for posting such a disgruntled explanation on the redirect page.

Skottie, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Andrew a sweet boy for tending to the server?!? And for posting such a disgruntled explanation on the redirect page.

I was just really pissed off because I shirked my other responsibilities, drove into the city, found a car park, and couldn't get into the bloody building. Bah.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Man Andrew he is crafty. Which is a swell thing.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Man Andrew sounds like a young marble giants songtitle

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Or a UNIX help command.

\\$ man andrew
No manual entry for andrew.

Awwww...but I want to read the instructions!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

default behaviour is surly, can invoke -p for placid.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

or simply "cat beer | andrew" for the same effect

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A thread about cat beer would rule all.

And thanks Andrew! You're better than cat beer.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Or even a cat-o-nine-beers

Skottie, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Kittens-o-nine-tails, Skottie?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think ha1r talk should be googleproofed full stop.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

We are so googlable.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I'd google you in a heartbeat.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Googleproof the whole damn thing, I say.

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Let's build a mote!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Googleproof the whole damn thing, I say

Damn right!

Googling the bit of my email that is indexed throws up is having a camel toe a good thing or bad? as the top hit. This may alarm my c4mel-t0ed stalkers.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh and is it normal for some girls to be quiet in bed? is just below it. Of all the threads I've posted to, why those?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Let's build a mote!

I agree! We also need a small army of archers to keep the rabble at bay.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Yipes. I've just googled my name, and 'horse of babylon' and 'teh HoBB' and I'm turning up all over. Delete ILX!

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha, there's a sex advice columnist for the Macalester College newspaper with the pseudonym Rock Hardy.

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I think Marissa Marchant put some kind of Google whammy on us.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

she set us up the bomb

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

that's what we get for being lowlife

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I meant moat, I had a feeling I'd spelt that wrong.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 August 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Things which seem to provoke the Poxy Fule:

-Moderation activities of any kind
-Searching

Like others have said, though, they don't last long. It inspires me to go away and do a bit of work, actually, so that might be a good thing.

Masonic Boom (kate), Friday, 5 August 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Deleting messages (spam etc.) doesn't seem to slow things down at all, unless it's a delayed reaction.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

"-Searching"

Can you search via google? That way you could avoid downtime, no?

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

I think Google covers enough to find people, but not nearly enough to find threads.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

But there is a Google search on the ILX search page. It's the bit everyone ignores.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

(Because it's a bit shit, and doesn't return all answers.)

ALEC TEA SKIRT (kate), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that Searching provokes the poxy fule. Searching does seem to be completely FuXoRed, almost like there's a limit of one search ever or something. I've had a search request that I've been trying roughly once a minute for 15 minutes now, it always returns Server Too Busy 6% immediately, but the rest of the board is still completely functional.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

The nice thing about our recent surge in Googleability is that it makes the Google search function work a lot better. There was a time not too long ago when the Google search turned up absolutely nada.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

How good a correlation is there between major database seizures and moderators locking threads/users?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Sweet mother of God...

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

If I win the lottery, this place is getting the world's biggest server, just so I don't get poxy fuckin' fuled ever again.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

last night - about 11.30pm BST - i wasn't even getting poxy fuled: just no connection at all. after a few minutes i gave up and went to bed. looking at the new answers pages this morning, it seems things were dead from half-ten until about half-twelve. what was all that about, then?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

It's all about volume, how many people are using the server when and so forth. Andrew has passed on some info to the mods and we're discussing options at present.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

http://www.zerointerrupt.com/pix/messagebored.gif

never want to be poxyfuled again!

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

we're discussing options at present

i favour a lengthy bout of percussive maintenance.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

what WOULD be nice, actually, is when, if you're posting a message, and if it happens to poxy fule, for the poxy fule page to repeat what you were trying to post, so at least you can copy and paste that onto your computer or something to repost when server comes back. BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING ANNOYING WHEN YOU HAVE POSTED SOMETHING AND THEN IT POXY FULES AND YOU CAN'T GO BACK TO GET BACK WHAT YOU HAD WRITTEN. (i've taken to copy and paste every long posts i write now just in case it p.fules)

Me, of course. It won't help with anything but you'll know you have given me money, and for that I thank you.

haha, same as last time then? ;) ;)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

and also, perhaps when the server load is too high, the poxy fule isn't given to EVERYONE but instead happens in a lottery system (so e.g. a random 5% of connections will poxy fule if the server load is 5% too high ) or something?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

haha, same as last time then? ;) ;)

What a wise young man you are!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

ken: if that happens, use the "back" button.

i favour a lengthy bout of percussive maintenance.

sounds like a good idea.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

doesn't always work fp :( sometimes the cache times out and it tries to load the same page (and thus bringing back a poxy fule page :\\\)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

huh, that sounds like your personal browser issue, I've never not been able to use the back button.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

It's happened to me as well, Teeny, not often but a couple of times.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

It never happened to me on Internet Explorer, but did happen to me on Safari.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I always copy before I post.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

i think i get this more often than others because i spend so much more time than you lot when i compose my posts. rather than just blurting out "witty" one-liners like you guys always do.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I resent this statement, I have never been witty in my life

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

so i noticed!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Such bitterness!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

THIS BLOWS.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 5 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

i like it! it's as if god is saying "here you go mark, a temporary reprieve from your inexplicable compulsion! now go do something useful."

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 5 August 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

It just means I visit inferior message boards.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

now it looks like someone fucked with the clock. weird.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 5 August 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Is it June 27, 2001, yet?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I've been adding a lot of state capitols to that landmark.google game, y'all.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 5 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

USE ONE FIREFOX, KEN CHIENESE.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 5 August 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

OGM YOU USE FIERFOX??!
