Taking sides: deodorant vs antiperspirant

So, I just used some antiperspirant for the first time in a while and I didn't sweat all day (a long day). But it didn't feel too right not perspiring at all.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, sweating is important. I go deodorant all the way (unless I accidentally buy a/p by mistake, which happens more than I care to admit). But if you don't sweat, those toxins that persperation eliminates just stay in your body, usually finding their way to your brain, which is why you sometimes might have impure thoughts.

Mine says 'anti-perspirant deodorant' on the can, how do I know which one it is????

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate the ones that come as sprays, I'm allergic to them.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud: the co-op/hippie kids at my radio station going on about how deodorant/antiperspirants cause cancer, so of course they don't wear any.

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Taking sides, my ass: you've got to have both or you're NOWHERE, man. Plus, didn't the NCI prove there was no link between anti-persps and breast cancer years ago?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hippies. Stinky fucking shoe-stealing hippies.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Deoderant is little more than cheap perfume, Febreeze for your armpits. You need the antiperspirant element too.

The latest I heard on the cancer thing is that if you don'tshave under your arms more than twice a week you're OK. I think I heard this on Radio 4 so it must be true.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it's both, as are most. 'Anti-perspirant' means it clogs up your sweat pores to keep you dry. The 'deodorant' bit just means it's perfumed to mask the smell of stale sweat. It doesn't really deodorize.

SMELLING OF BODY ODOUR IS WRONG AND BAD.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

on Queer Eye for the Strait Guy they recommeneded to use deodorant when not being too active and antiperspirant when being active.

That seems like an okay policy, but I think if I'm going to go jogging or work out I'm going to want to sweat.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

As I said on the other thread, as far as I can make out, non-antiperspirant deodorant is just cheap perfume. Why not just wear after shave?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that seems to be when sweat matters most and when it's most acceptable to sweat

xpost

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with N. I guess it depends on how close you're going to get to other people - if not very, then hell, don't wear any at all!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to be a deodorant guy (good ol' speed stick). But after some trials with a/p a few years ago I switched and have never gone back. On the few occasions I used deodorant instead, it didn't really do the job. I never smell bad, and that's a good thing.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I find a/p stings my pits

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't use the liquid roll-ons - they sting a bit. Stick with the, er... stick.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

A liquid roll-on should not sting. Do not apply over broken or irritated skin! Read the fine print, son!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And never, ever, put it your eye.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I use anti-perspirant and it doesn't fucking work AT ALL, but at least my soggy underarms smell of raspberries (as opposed to when I used all-natural deodorant and smelled like tea tree essence and old sweat, very evocative I'm sure).

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it makes no difference at all, I still have sweaty armpits. I have acid sweat.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I misread this thread title as Taking sides: deodorant vs antidepressant.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

A/Ps are a waste of time, from what I can tell.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sure anti-perspirant cream is kinda decent.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud: the co-op/hippie kids at my radio station going on about how deodorant/antiperspirants cause cancer, so of course they don't wear any.

so OTM. God, one of my good friends used to stink fairly often until I finally confronted him about it and he went on about this cancer thing. I had never heard this before. supposed to have something to do with aluminoids or alkaloids or something? Anyway, I think I finally browbeat him into using anti-perspirant by informing of how much it bothered not just me but all of our friends..

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Anti-perspirant contains aluminum, which may cause alzheimer's disease when large amounts are absorbed through the skin. Or that could be a myth.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I know the hippie thing all to well as well. but you know, as far as anti-perspirant I imagine when I use it the sweat that would come out my arm pits migrates to my nuts or somewhere instead.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

By the time I am old they'll have cured alzheimers, this goes for all those other diseases too.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

you stink.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember somebody telling me once how they were standing in a queue in a bank or somewheere and there was someone standing in front of them who'd used so much deodrant that the smell of it was making them feel sick. This struck me as the ultimate irony - someone is so desperate not to cause offence by smelling that they overcompensate and end up...causing offence by smelling!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 5 June 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never, ever worn deodorant nor antiperspirant.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 5 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh.

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

MarkH has a fine point. I'd rather smell light sweat than a heavy STINK of either perfume, aftershave or deoderant. Theres nothing worse than smelling someone ten minutes before you even see them.

On the same note - women who sit at work and COAT THEMSELVES in Impulse or something at their desks five times a day - STOP THAT YOU PERFUMED PONCES.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 6 June 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to think that using antiperpirant for years on a daily basis probably isn't good for you. Stinking isn't either. Deodorant, however, has no effect other than making you smell like deodorant and stinky stale sweat.

At any rate, you should only ever wear unscented antiperpirant. The smell of antip/deod is a horrifying case of the medium calling attention to itself.

Skottie, Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark I personally think that putting sticky, smelly stuff under my arms is kind of disgusting. Did anybody ever see that Paul Newman movie about the old-time southern politician? Blaze or something? Newman says something similar in it, implying that his opponent is a superficial girly-man. "And he wears... sticky stuff under his arms!!" The crowd gasps.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but a) we're not old time southern politicians and b) they were wrong anyway. I guess if you wash your body and your clothes regularly you're never going to smell too foul, but whether it's natural or not, the by-product of bacterial activity is not something I want to smell more than I absolutely have to.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 7 June 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

By-product of bacterial activity = ALCOHOL and I like to smell it as a precursor to tasting it.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 7 June 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with tracer, plus I've never founbd one that didn't bring my armpits out in a rash, not that I've looked that hard.

Ed (dali), Monday, 7 June 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
what's up with unscented deodorant???
personally I use deodorant during winter and anti-p during summer months
how long have we actually been using all these chemicals on our under arms...do we really know what it does...I would rather smell a little real than artifical....but then again we live in a society where being artifical in any way you can is the accepted way

karen, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

but whether it's natural or not, the by-product of bacterial activity is not something I want to smell more than I absolutely have to.

cheese is awesome.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i very rarely use deodourant, being a not so sweaty kind of guy. but i did use Lynx/Axe Phoenix, once, last week. for the axe/lynx effect.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

its all deodorant for me. anti-p always made my armpits sting.
