Looking for edginess: C/D?

Out last night with some friends, we were wandering between places when a random woman, looking a bit aimless, comes up to us:

"Excuse me? Do you know anywhere I could go near here that's kind of edgy and hardcore?"

We kind of didn't know what to say, except "um ... no". We didn't look particularly hardcore ourselves, certainly. So, what do you think about a) going out to deliberately look for "the edge" b) asking random strangers in the street where you can find it?

did they mean a club?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 14 March 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume so. All they said, though, was "somewhere"

(we didn't give her very useful answers. One of my friends burst out laughing (because a) his surname is Edge b) he was on a sugar high), before saying "I could kill you. That would be edgy.")

Daria - As far as I can make out, edgy occurs when middlebrow, middle-aged profiteers are looking to suck the energy -- not to mention the spending money -- out of the "youth culture." So they come up with this fake concept of seeming to be dangerous when every move they make is the result of market research and a corporate master plan.

on first glance its kind of dumb, yea, like who would phrase anything like that? but i mean, it depends what they were looking for, if they were looking for dingy warehousey type thing playing liberator type stuff, where they could score, then whats the best way of phrasing that, they might have been looking for somewhere thats kind of locally known, but below the radar.

i think that could describe hardcore well enough, the kind of place that might be known as full on, but i dont know about edgy, that has a rather more amorphous nature.

i think we may have stopped people on the street in strange towns and asked for somewhere 'bangin' before, theres a lot of pretty under-the-radar weird things going on out there

i mean, i'm presuming they were fucked, right?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 14 March 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Better to just ask where there's free drugs and shit or "do you know any parties going on?"

In general, not to G

The question made me think of this thread and all the trouble it caused.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 14 March 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I would just direct to them to any old club, but then I have no idea where most clubs are or what goes on there. Oh well.

the edge is fine.

And, before anyone else does this:

They didn't seem to be, which was one of the stranger things about it. She seemed to be in a bit of a low mood, but entirely sober.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you misheard her. Maybe she was looking for Edinburgh Castle, not 'edgy & hardcore'.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Heheh. Sadly, no.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Where did this take place exactly?

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

On the corner of the Cowgate and Pleasance

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

donald?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard of Donald Cowgate

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the Cowgate is quite edgy and hardcore on a Friday night.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You should have directed them to Revolution - going there would make me edgy and lothian road's pretty hardcore at the weekends.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the scariest part of town is now piccardy place. I had to walk across it just after 3am on Friday night. Really weird mix of people all crossing over each other, all spazzed in one way or another. Much antagonism and general stupidity.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I was obviously a bastion of sobriety and loving respect for humanity in whatever form it manages to mangle itself into.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, edgy, yeah.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I also heard over the weekend that CC Blooms has the highest number of troublesome incidents out of any bar in Edinburgh, mostly involving women.
