"collectable" porcelain antiques, C ou D?

Last week, I was walking thru the shopping mall, on the way to marks & spencer's, which leads past one of those shops which sells highly-priced porcelain ornaments. I usually look in the window, because, y'know, I do find these things distinctly odd in some way. There was a poster for a forthcoming item, which was a recreation, in porcelain, of Gustave Klimt's "the kiss" (or whatever it's called). I noticed it b/c I like Klimt pictures a lot. It appeared to be quite cleverly done, though you couldn't tell how big it was from the picture on the poster. The cost of this "limited edition" item was two thousand eight hundred and fifty pounds (just over five thousand us dollars). I was kind of flabbergasted. This is quite a lot of money by most people's standards. Questions which came to mind were:

1/when one can buy a "limited edition" packet of crisps or orange flavoured kit-kat chocolate bar, does this term have any actual meaning?

2/who the fukc can afford to lay out nearly three grand for such an item anyway?

The one in the pic was bottom left in teeny's second link.

4400 dollars seems like a deal compared to the price at the shop I saw it at!!

If they were really badass, they'd do the "medicine" or "jusrisprudence" ceiling murals haha

actually, as always, it's classic if it's other people's money.

Of course you are completely correct teeny, but good grief, that's VERY expensive for a non-functional item nevertheless!

i wonder if the reessurgance(sp) of craft will make high artists critically reevaulate this work.

Classic only so that anytime someone drops a box, you can say "be careful! That's my Hummel collection!"

there's lots of people willing to fork out loads of cash for so-called *limited edition* antiques. but it means little: it's what the market/people want. my parents buy 'n' sell noritake. you can buy this for next to nothing and in japan ask LOADS of money for it. which my parents do.

Anthony's point is a good one. I look at this stuff, and often I can really admire the craft that's gone into making (or at the very least designing) it, but there's no way I'd want any of it in my home.
