Aged 43. He's currently on a respirator in a Buenos Aires hospital.

i'm hearing the opening riff of "cocaine" in my head just now

duke area, Monday, 19 April 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but she does so much yoga?

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 19 April 2004 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

His Lotus Position is more like a Road-Train Position.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 19 April 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading between the lines, this looks pretty serious. His condition is described as 'unstable'. Not often you hear that.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This man was playing World Cup football and still scoring goals ten years ago.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

as well as being gakked up to the eyeballs

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite Maradona quote (talking about playing a charity game at the age of 40 and having no power to shoot), "it's like sleeping with your sister. You can go so far, and then, no."

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that too.

If he dies, something tells me he'll have "Greatest footballer ever and much better than that homosexual Pele" on his headstone. Which will be twelve feet tall.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40055000/jpg/_40055147_2000getty.jpg

This is taken from the BBC site. They're not taking this wholly seriously, are they?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

he looks like Shane Warne's idiot brother in that photo

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It'll be a real pisser if he does die, because he is the best footballer ever, no question. What's the reasoning behind FIFA pretending he's not? Is it just that he's not the image that they want to project to those all important American and Far East markets? Or is Pele getting them impotence treatment on the cheap?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

or that he's not John Charles or Ferenc Puskas

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Christian Dailly.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Neil Grayson.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil Grayson is probably the player I admire the most. This is no lie.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that because of the "shut that door!" goal celebration he did once?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I read this thread as "Madonna heart attack". You see what you want to see, I suppose.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like the irony of being on a respirator at Buenos Aires

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it just that he's not the image that they want to project to those all important American and Far East markets?

You got it there, they don't want a 5'4", 12 stone cokehead - Pele's more photogenic

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

''It'll be a real pisser if he does die, because he is the best footballer ever, no question.''

has anyone seen both pele and maradona play? can you compare both anyway?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Not in the flesh but I do think Maradona was better

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I am better than both of them

Thierry Henry (at Julios) (daveb), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The rote arguement for Maradona being the best player ever is that he won both the World Cup and Serie A on his own.

Discuss.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen Maradona play a whole game and I've only seen Pele walk about the pitch very slowly in the rather boring "classic" 1970 England game which they repeated on telly during the 2002 WC.

Di Stefano and Cruyff are normally the names bandied about after Pele and Maradona. Personally, Zidane is the best player I've seen, but I've only been watching football for about 13 years.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Agree on Zidane

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

FIFA will never talk about Cruyff either as he's too "awkward" so he'll never be their posterboy, going back to great publicist Pele.

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The big problem with Pele is that he turned out to such a pompous egotist, ugh.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

and that's not a problem with maradona

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If Platini gets the FIFA President job, do you reckon he may get "promoted" in these lists?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope he does - on both counts

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it's because Pele is the only one who isn't awkward or very much tied to a single club, like Di Stefano or Beckenbauer. Also because he's good for a "football is love"-type soundbite.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Maradona in his first two seasons with Boca in the early eighties. Just the greatest.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

best footballer you've seen play in the flesh (ie NOT on TV)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

''The rote arguement for Maradona being the best player ever is that he won both the World Cup and Serie A on his own.''

I'm just wondering bcz I've never seen a game by either. But yeah, winning the seria A was quite an achievement.

x-post

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Defenders are always incredibly unfashionable whenever these lists roll out - whither Maldini?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Maldini won't get into these lists until a good five years after he retires, because nobody is going to treat him as one of the greatest of all time while he continues playing at his current level ability, which could best be described as "zombie". Wait till the memories of that all die down, and then he'll be ranked.

He's not as good as Baresi or Gentile, anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Beckenbauer (admittedly a Libero, but it's close enough). Baresi too.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Baresi was just fucking awesome.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Moore? Sammer?

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, does being dead make you a better footballer in the eyes of the public, like with rock stars?

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Not Bobby Moore for sure, what a donkey

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There are staggeringly few dead "great" footballers though. I mean... Moore, Yashin, Charles... is Just Fontaine still around?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Matthews, obviously. Is Giuseppe Meazza dead?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Florian Albert?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

he's still alive, or was when that history of footie thing was made last year or so (actually, he may have died before it was released as there was an obit at the end of pne prog)

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Pele is a corporate cocksucker. He's part of the Havelunch mafia, and pele is their posterboy because he does nothing to rock the boat with respect to FIFA. Unlike Maradona, who despite being a screaming egomaniac, realsies that he was put on the earth for much more than being the corporate mouth piece of the men who stole the game.

x-post Meazza, Milano defender are you straight or are you gay?

xxpost - Neil Grayson was the archetypal honest footballer - no airs and graces, normal guy, always gave his best, never quit and was an excellent footballer in the lower reaches. A man who knew his dreams outstipped his reality, but toiled in that reality with honour and selflessness.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

favourite Maradona moment (biased wrt WC86): his celebration and facial expression after scoring a glorious goal against Greece at World Cup '94. never mind that a week later he was kicked out for drug-taking, causing him to make a somewhat cryptic and very memorable (for me) remark about 'the powers that be cannot be trusted, all i have left is my family and my friends'. i think he was actually talking about God and not FIFA but hard to tell.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Puskas still alive?

There are so many supposedly great players I've never actually seen play beyond the odd clip - Platini, Beckenbauer, Best, Cruyff, Pele - Maradona was among the earliest I remember seeing play when he was at his peak.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

calzino, Wednesday, 25 November 2020 21:25 (five years ago)

Och, he was just copying Joe Jordan's goal against the Welsh in 1977. And then Archie Gemmill's against the Dutch in '78.

calzino, Wednesday, 25 November 2020 21:36 (five years ago)

anyway I thought Maradonna's behaviour at the last World cup finals was abhorrent, and I'm not going to pretend I liked him as a person - he was fucking horrible.

Earlier today I was talking to an American friend – one who admittedly cares little for sports in general – and he'd never heard of Maradona. I have no idea why it came as a surprise – it makes perfect sense.

In 1984 Diego Maradona asked Napoli & Fifa to arrange a friendly in order to help an ill child. Both refused.

Maradona then organised a 12 v 12 game on the field opposite the child's house.

Funnily enough I hadn't heard the Argentine commentary on the Maradona's goal till I saw Kapadia's (flawed, imo) doc last year. Just incredible (even for Spanish/South American commentators, who are just the best)

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 25 November 2020 23:15 (five years ago)

the doc was flawed but some great footage. the opening sequence is exhilarating

He’s not quick, more like a short-legged bull, but he carries the ball sewn to his foot and he’s got eyes all over his body.

Fucking love this line from that Nation article linked above btw. Lots made of his strength, balance, low centre of gravity and close control but you don't get to be the best 10 without the eyes everywhere.

Sometimes those eyes were out on stalks mind...

I love what he says about Del Piero but a bit harsh on Zizou I feel?

scampus fugit (gyac), Saturday, 28 November 2020 12:12 (five years ago)

Given the way Zidane's career ended for France I'd say there is a point in there.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 28 November 2020 12:22 (five years ago)

Hmmm, is there? Maradona sounds like he’s talking about how he perceived Zidane actually played but what you’re talking about is his red card, right? I don’t see the point you’re making, sorry.

scampus fugit (gyac), Saturday, 28 November 2020 12:29 (five years ago)

Zizou was sublime.

There's maybe an argument that he didn't play with the same obvious passion or joy for the beautiful game blah blah blah as someone like DM but there's a shitload of cultural bias to unpack under all that. Diego is throwing away 2 second judgements on people he barely knows for the sake of punting a book, they should be taken as such.

Clean-up on ILX (onimo), Saturday, 28 November 2020 12:38 (five years ago)

These are not fully evidenced takes, just off the cuff impressions. All I'm saying is his red card and aftermath somewhat back what he says about the perception about what he saw in the pitch.

The one that sounds off to me is the Beckham one xp
