California falls off the end of the world! Millions dead! Evacuate the West Coast.

But - no more Microsoft, no more Starbucks, so it can't be a complete disaster.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 3 May 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No Hollywood! Awright.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 3 May 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The opening credits looked like a rip-off of 24.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 3 May 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Microsoft is based in Seattle Washington, Moron.

If that did happen I'd want to die with Aja (and/or maybe Cassie Steele).

Dante-Cubed (Sean3), Monday, 3 May 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 3 May 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

we want you to die with aja too.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 May 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You kill Don and Walt, I kill you.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 3 May 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear the Space Needle gets toppled. I actually almost wish I had a tv with cable for this, it looks so cheesy. I'm watching the movie Enigma tonight though, which looks promising.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 3 May 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So good and so bad at the same time. I almost soiled my pants.

beau, Monday, 3 May 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The Space Needle fell in the first like 2 minutes.

I'm a sucker for cheesy cataclysm films, and their adherence to a certain formula. Smaller catastrophes, a scientist who figures out what's going on but no one listens to them (except for one random plucky young person), the politician who wants to nuke something, the politician who cares deeply about their missing relatives, etc. Except in the case of this film it was oddly the scientist who suggested the nukes, whatev.

I was a little disappointed at the "end" of last night's ep when I found out I was going to have to wait another day before I got to see California fall into the ocean though. Weak.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

In what sickoid parallel universe would the American public vote in someone as assinine as Beau Bridges for president....oh wait.

Also, what's up with the new trend of "end times" films like this miniseries and "The Day After Tomorrow" (where the world...or at least NYC...is consumed by icy waters)? Do we need this sort've entertainment in the wake of actual eye-popping disasters ?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

new trend? Ever hear of Irwin Allen?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Such films back to back in such short order, I meanb

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not a disaster movie if O.J. Simpson isn't in it.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Microsoft is based in Seattle Washington, Moron

And so is Starbucks... and the movie actually does affect the entire west coast, including Seattle.

So watch who you're calling a moron, Asshat.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

FFS Why do people talk to Dante?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i felt like San Francisco got gypped, we only got one really fake ass shot of the Golden Gate Bridge coming apart (complete with very laconic narration from the news reporter in the helicopter: "It's unbelievable. I can't believe it. It's twisting, it's bending."). What about the Transamerica Building? What about all the other bridges that can fall apart? CHEAP.

Also, Kim Delaney and Beau Bridges make me homicidal.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was glancing back and forth while this was on last night. Question: Did they extreme bike messenger outrun the falling space needle, or did he get squashed by said space needle? I was hoping for the latter, but somehow ended up missing it.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Beau Bridges should be put into a box and catapulted into a dank, muddy swamp e

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The bike messenger got smushed. The whole time he was fleeing, I'm like "dude, how hard is it to TURN!?!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

haha. yeah and I've heard of quicksand, but I've never heard of quickgravel.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

All the imagination of the entire film was used up in the biker sequence during the opening titles. The rest was garbage.

Skottie, Monday, 3 May 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

FFS Why do people talk to Dante?

-- VengaDan Perry

Sigh. Yeah, I can see why you'd ask this question. But it's Monday, and before I finish my first cup of coffee, cheap shots are kinda all I can manage.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle otm about San Francisco's lame-ass 9.2 (yeah fuckin' right that's a 9.2!)

So far, this one's suffering from severe cheapism, spending more time on that damned sinking truck than on the supposed annihilation of San Francisco.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

BUT SHE LEFT HER INHALER IN THE TRUCK WHAT EVER IS SHE GOING TO DO!?!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the things that bothers me most about this movie is that teenage-girl-who-has-asthma's fanny pack, the contents of which apparently do NOT include her INHALER.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's too bad this entire mini-series isn't just a bunch of random shots of space needles falling on people.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"I forgot my inhaler, ohno!" THWAP!

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Modern society's love of space needles is surely going to result in its premature death.

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

um...

luna (luna.c), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh sure. you bigwigs in your fancy chrome offices and german luxury cars NEVER LISTEN TO ME.

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to do an IMDB birthdate check before I got my Ebert on about the governor's daughter.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

got my Ebert on = new phrase of the year

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/04/30/DDG036CKMQ1.DTL

Fred Ward had better have been extremely well paid for this or facing a looming financial disaster. Otherwise, he will remain unforgiven. The single most terrifying aspect of the show was the dialogue but i only say that upon reflection. Last night I was braying with hysterical laughter.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There's dialogue!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"David Cubitt stars as the Guy Who Looks Stunned by Everything Kim Delaney Says and, later in the movie, as the Guy Who Advances the Plot by Asking Questions Only Delaney Can Explain."

Nice like Michael!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

er, nice liNK

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Space needle == mallet of God.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

In a perfect world, Space Needles would be more like God's kebab skewer.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Or perhaps like the sticks the chimpanzees use to wheedle ants out the anthill for lunch.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone would have saved the day surely.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

HUZZAH!

Still one of your best efforts, that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That was one of the first experiments with Photoshop. It could be re done.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

When Mandee mentioned this movie last night I felt very sad that I missed it -- I forgot it was on.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You can still watch the conclusion (aka BOOM POW CALIFORNIA GO BYE BYE) tonight!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There is hope for me yet.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Part of me wouldn't mind seeing OC fall into the ocean, and yet I would worry, as I might die.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Why wasn't Berkeley or El Cerrito in it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Cuz there's no space needles to fall on extreme bike messengers in those places, duh.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

They could have dropped the Campanile on him though, no?

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

why did they keep showing the same house in the marina that fell down in the last big earthquake over and over on the news footage? I hope the owner of that house gets residuals.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Worst CGI ever. It looked like the Sim City terrain editor.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Are people supposed to be able to stand on their feet during a 10.5 earthquake?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I had trouble standing on my feet during a 6.5 quake on the 7th floor of a building from the 1920s. Supposedly the rocking we had there was equal to what you'd feel in a 7.3 (I don't know who came up with that number, it's what our landlord told us a week later.) So 7.5 -> 8.5 is a ten-fold increase... then another to 9.5 and yet another to 10.5. I'd guess you wouldn't be able to easily stand. ;-)

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That map graphic from after the "big one" looked like it was made in MS Paint.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the final three minutes of this were perhaps the 3 stupidest minutes of my life.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Sample dialogue please?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw those three minutes as well... So everyone died? To really dramatic music?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

NOBODY died.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK A BUNCH OF NOBODY DYING.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever had such a good time watching such horsepenis bullshit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone stared breathlessly at the new geographic configuration that turned southern california into an island and smiled at how beautiful it was, (the air suspiciously free of the smoke you'd expect there to be if AN ENTIRE 1/8 OF THE STATE had been destroyed), and they ignored the fact that presumably millions of people had drowned. We got a beau bridges voiceover about how man is not the master of nature or some BS. No-one important died, unfortunately. I was hoping in the last second, the earthquake was start up again, swallow Kim Delaney, and they'd cut to the credits.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how, after that event, everyone was just like "it's finally over", as if they all were somehow clued in, and not like OH GOD WHAT'S GONNA FUCKING HAPPEN NEXT!?!? as it should've been.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

When the commercials hinted to the warhead dropping lose, I predicted right then that "That motherfucker from TREMORS is gonna be climbing his ass down a HOLE here in a minute!", and lo and befuckinghold...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally drafting a Cheesy Made-For-TV Cataclysm Movie Drinking Game now. I gotta be prepared for next time.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"Look, dad, against the sky! The credits!"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

They also totally didn't play up the girl-lost-her-inhaler-into-the-quickgravel teenage-hottie-about-to-die suspence factor nearly enough (aka AT ALL). Plus they never revealed the contents of her fannypack! It's a mystery for the ages!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

More fannies?

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's fannies. Fannies all the way down...

Dale the Titled (cprek), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

But - no more Microsoft

Having been a former employee of said company, part of me has to say "fuck off"... Ok, part of me, calm down there.. it's ok.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Microsoft is based in Seattle Washington, Moron.

Wow. For once, I'm actually rooting on a Dante comment!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

'Rooting' is Australian slang for 'fucking,' so reconsider.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And so is Starbucks... and the movie actually does affect the entire west coast, including Seattle.

Haha, ok, I'm the biggest asshat here for not knowing this thread was about a MOVIE.. I just thought it was a theoretical thread. (and for the 'rooting' comment in many contexts)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)
